Really need a hand with axles..

Hello, Everyone.

Duck, from Yellowknife here.

So, I have one of these:

Originally, my friend and I each got one to build together and then I got hurt and had to take a few months off for wrist and hand surgery. Don't worry, I learned my lesson. Gramma always said that'd happen... and I'd get hair on my palms...

Aaaaanyway…

My friend has had *NOTHING* but problems with his front axles. He's tried 3-4 different brands and they all bust.

I need this rig to be ultra reliable, I don't have a lot of time to wrench.

So I've come to the conclusion as neither of us can figure out why the thing is destroying front axles, that when I build mine I have to redo the bottom end -- axles, housings, etc.

I wanted to just put vanquish axle shafts in it, but apparently I can't as they are different... which means I have to go to a SCX 2 axle .. which is the whole rebuild mentioned above.

This sucks. A lot. This truck has sat for 5 months post surgery because I get annoyed every time I look at it.

It's money I don't really want to put into the build that takes away from something else. Especially as I tend to be quality oriented.

So, I'm asking.. because I am sort of desperate here.

I want this machine to be super reliable for fairly high mileage trailing and a TTC in July.

Do I even have any choice but to use Vanquish axles and housings? I'm really not happy spending $700 CDN on a pair of axles... My thought is if I'm going to spend $400 I might as well get portals..

What would you all recommend?

Ideally, I'd like to *FIX* this and keep the cost down but make it 100% solid.

Portals are not necessary, just saying if I have to spend high dollar I will try and get the best I can.

Are there more... reasonable ideas out there... besides me blowing all that coin?

Any ideas for a fix, or a set of less expensive but 'rock solid' options?

Best Bang for you buck solid axles would be the SSD Complete axle set.

What keeps breaking?

I suspect cvd's....

Cheapest option would be the Axial branded 3 piece axle set. @$67 US.

I have had zero issues running high power through my one piece Raw Builders Kit axles(3000kv 4pole on 3s) whereas I cannot seem to keep cvd pins in my gen one axles.

Cannot go wrong with SSD.

I have never bought Vanquish but they look like jewelry and are priced accordingly.

For $200 you can get a RBK. .. just saying.

Pretty much keeps snapping CVD's.


What I can't figure out is *WHY* -- my leading theory is that the steering angle is too much for the CVD's. Any ideas on what I could try that would work? There doesn't seem to be a steer stop on this unit.

It'd sure be nice if I could find a workable option that didn't require axle housing replacement.


The problem is, in particular, this is based on the original SCX so SCX II Axles are out without a housing replacement.

Have you set the end points/travel for the steering throw?

A stop on the knuckle isn't the only thing stopping the steering throw, if your servo is asking for more angle than the axle can provide it may be whats snapping the CVD's.

Also... Where/How are you Drive'n the Rig???
I mean absolutely no disrespect to your driving skills, simply asking...

1) "Where"... Does the terrain you drive have lots of holes, causing your wheels and tires to get stuck, often causing CVD's to break???

2) "How"... Are you gentle with your Rig, a little rough on it, or do you believe in "when in doubt, throttle out"???

Those two things (in my own personal experience) are the main reasons CVD's break.
I got some Rigs I BEAT on and sure enough, they break all the time. Then I got other Rigs I drive very technically and methodically and some still have been running stock axles for years.

Something to always keep in mind when trying to get the longest life out of your Rig...
"You get what you pay for, so drive within the limits of what you paid for".
