Class 3 Build questions

Ive been out of the crawler world since about 2017, but am getting back into it. I want to do a class 3 build but had a few questions.

What are the limitations of plastic axle housings? I can get my hands on some Capra take outs for next to nothing but dont want to have issues and just end up putting an aluminum housing in anyways.

As far as wheel base goes is there a certain length that seems to work better. As of now its a Poized T3, with a 4.92 tire, shooting for sub 5# weight.

Thanks in advance, its good to be back in the scale crawler world!

the only input i have is that axial plastic has come along way since horizon took over
the capra did have axle issues when they first came out but I haven't heard anything about broken axles in a long time and the housings are what $10

the ryft also had broken axle issues around that same time and I haven't heard of any issues with those ether in a long time so I'm guessing it was just growing pains

That's good to know, really helps the budget and weight savings.

Even tho scuffed up metal does have a cooler look than mangled plastics

Class 3 you’re allowed to run dig And 4ws now instead of one or the other. I’ve only ever ran 4ws but you’ll need one if you’re going to compete. A lot of things are preference. When running a bigger tire I like to have a little more wb. I’d say somewhere in the 12.5-12.8 with 4.9 tires. If you’re running a 5.25” say west desert wheeler cut n shut I’d probably want to be at 13” I’ve got a moonbuggy on Capra 4ws axles with the wdw cut n shuts at 14” and I love that thing.
The sorrca rules changed a lot about 1.5-2 years ago so if you are going to compete and you haven’t already, take a look at those

Good Info! Ya I've been reading the rules here and there. Lots of new things that weren't a thing back in 14-15 when I last was into this. Still trying to find a comp or comp series within driving distance. Otherwise I don't see the point in building a ruled up rig.

Seems like a lot of the Wisconsin pages or threads have gone dark.

I’ve seen plastic housings hold up decent, but have also seen them take some top drives out of the running. I’d eliminate fail points, you can always save weight elsewhere.
