Hey and hello,

since this is my premiere appearance on the forum I'd like to greet everyone warmly and pass around a hearthy hello <bows>.

A little introduction. I've always been interested in models. As a kiddo I've been running with a stick and pretending it was a plane, as a boy I had my very first "RC" (cord-steering model of a russian lunar rover). Teenage times passed under plastic models of planes and helicopters. Then other, non RC hobbies came. Looking back I had quite an interesting time. But then came house, family, job... and suddenly hobby time was just a memory.

But it still remained somewhere in me, laying dormant, waiting for a better times. It kicked in again around 2.5 years ago. Family/work issues stabilised, some spare money appeared. Heck, even I got time. And I came back to my early years and fascinations - flying stuff.

Yes, I know, this is a crawler place, but please - bare with me as its heading in the right way. And I must admit, I'm missing someone I can talk to, share my thoughts. And who knows, maybe get some advice or help. Will see, now, let's back to my story...

So I went the hard way and decided to have a helicopter. Among all RC stuff I picked the most difficult one. And to make it even more challenging I decided I will build my own set instead of buying RTF (ready to fly). After a quite long research, reading, comparing, etc. I finally got what I wanted.

Making long story short as it isn't relevant how I struggled: after 2 years Im still a poor pilot. All I can is to hover in the spot, make low and wide turns, square based flight at low altitude. Flying higher (3m+ / ~10ft) ended with serious crash 4 out of 5 attempts. Last time I've been flying was in early June - I crashed hard and since then my heli was lying lifless on the shelf. I didn't have heart to repair it. I had a breakdown with my hobby.

And I started to think - what to do. Drop it? Endure hard time and continue? Get something else, non RC? The answers were: no; no, I feel I'm over with heli; no, I like RC too much, addiction has spread too much. And besides helicopters there are other nice flying things, like multirotors. If I'd had something flying I'd go with tricopter (cheaper, easier to build and maintain and probably easier to master). Also I was flying little due to weather conditions - to fly a heli (especially when learning) you need to have a warm, dry and calm day. So no temps below 5*C / ~41F, no wind, no rain. An where I live we don't have much that kind of days so I was heavily limited.

So I was sitting and having a hard time, fighting with thoughts. And then I recalled one thing - I remember watching on YT some mudding with RC cars. Back then I thought "what a silly idea, driving through mud, every <idiot> can do that, there's no fun in that, helicopters - that's the stuff". Meh, how people change.

So mentally broken in terms of RC hobby I started to watch vids with RC cars. And the more I was watching the more I liked what I see. Especially 4x4 ones on rough terrain. I've also watched trials, mudding again, climbing but found it... not dynamic enough. I was leaning towards 4x4 trucks, dirt, gravel, sand, such stuff.

And I felt that I've found what I have lost. Made a decision: I'm dropping heli (need to repaid it and sell) and getting a truck. And I've picked this: Traxxas Slash 4x4 1/10 VXL. After all the struggle with heli kit and custom electronics I decided I want real RTR and out of the box stuff.

I bought and I don't regret. It's been just 2 weeks as I have it but I'm really happy. Weather conditions don't limit me anymore - is it warm or cold, dry or wet - I go and drive. And upcoming winter isn't a problem. Protected brushless motor, WR electronics and I already plan snow madness. 4WD is awesome and place where I live gives lots of places to use my truck.

Everything would be fine and my story could end here. A guy that finally found his way with RC hobby. But there's a little catch - the more I drive my Slash the more I want to go into harder terrain. Unfortunately Slash is a SCT (Short Course Track) vehicle and it isn't suitable for a places I'd seen it. Sure, I could go into Summit rather than Slash but it was a bit too expensive for me.

Don't get me wrong - I really enjoy my truck and I'm keeping it, that's for sure. I really like it, the power, the speed, the agility and handling. Ability to almost fly over dirt and holes. It's dynamic and tons of fun while driving.

But on the other hand I'm starting to think about SECOND model. Yeah, weird guy me. It's been just two weeks since he got cool truck and he's thinking about another.

Yes, I'm thinking about getting a crawler. Last week I spent watching YT vids with trials and stuff. I'm reading forums dedicated crawling. And I say it loud: I-want-one.

And again I start on "newbie noob" position. So far I realised that crawlers are quite different story than my current truck. First - fixed axles, longer suspension, transmissions (ratios, still can't figure it out properly, the higher ratio the more power and lower speed, right?) and wheels.

What I know is this:
- I'm not in a hurry, I have my Slash for the time being that fulfill my urge to drive (which I bought about 2-3 weeks after initial decision I go into trucks). So I can spare a few months before I start buying things.
- I want a 4x4 monster truck like... something. Right now I'm watching Axial Wraith in action.
- I want to build, not to buy RTR. But still hesitating and nothing is sure atm.
- I'm leaning towards brushed motor but again, nothing certain
- would be really great if it ended cheap. That's why I'm considering building instead of buying RTR

I'd really like to build my crawler rig. It don't have to be pretty, branded or whatever. I want cheap, reliable and tough crawler I can take into the forest, drop on ground and have some fun.

I have quite good LiPos that I want to use - 5200 mAh 30C 2s and that's all what I'm sure about. I found that Axial SCX10 axles can do but still didn't picked a transmission and motor.

I' still reading but can't find straight and simple answer for my questions. Heck, I'm so green that I cannot even articulate my questions properly. So I have a humble request - after that wall of text I gave you - would you be so kind and guide poor soul towards rocky fields of RC crawling and help me get a rig?

Cheers.

well welcome to the cool side of RC. you need to buy a wraith and your right when you say build it. Read Harleys thread on a bullet proof wraith and you will fall in love hard when you realize that you can have the best of both worlds. I traded my slash for a wraith and I love my slash that thing did some unbelievable things. But looking back I would make the trade again, my wraith is the most perfect well rounded truck I own it can go fast and run rocks and crawl pretty good and it will never be perfect. Even though power wise it is for me and its bullet proof "thanks Harley" but now its the cosmetic changes that will never end. well glad to hear you have come to the Dark Side of rc.

your on a good track for what it sounds like you want need. but imo i know you wanna build it to what you want but if your wanting to get into it cheaper to start i would go rtr. by the time you spend money on electronics you could be more then what the rtr goes for. unless you already have the electronics. my other suggestion is spend the $20 or $25 (cant remember how much it is) and buy a star on here or build up your posts and since your not in a big hurry 30 days on here. and once you have either the star or rep check out the classifieds in here. there are some nice built rigs that go for pretty fair prices. can do the same for you electronics. another rig to look at would be the ridgecrest. it doesnt have as much rep as the wraith but its close to one in the same. most the parts are the same. the axles, the running gear, chubs, knuckles. i think its all the same but chassis and body. but the ridgecrests are great rigs i have one and love it. jus my .02 tho. but other than that welcome to rcc and dont hesitate to ask some questions on here before diving into crawling. check out the brand specific threads for what you think you want read and reread and do some research on them.

Hey,

thanks for the welcome and info. Dark Side of the RC - I like it. Right now I don't want to get rid of my Slash - it's quite different truck, for other purpose so it stays. I'm just thinking about getting a crawler as a second model. The crawling idea is getting more and more interesting to me.

I'm haven't decided yet what to get - the Wraith was just an example of what I've got on my mind atm. Right now I'm "sitting on the fence" between RTR and DIY.

RTR has its pros - all in there, electronics, gears, wheels, springs, axles... but it feels like it is missing something. It's cool looking rig but I doesn't "feel" it. On the other hand, DIY, my hands are itching to get parts and start construction.

But here I meet the wall - there are literally tons of items (axles, transmissions, wheels, etc) which makes me completely lost.

So far I know I'll need:
- 2x axles
- motor (probably BL due to reliability despite higher cost)
- transmission
- 4x rims and tires
- drive shafts
- shocks
- Rx (probably I'll buy Traxxas Link since I already have Slash with Tx so I don't need to buy another radio)

I was wondering about "reductions" - are they necessary and what is general purpose of those (apart from obvious reduction of motor speed). I also omitted chasis as I plan to make it custom.

Meh, sorry for being so chaotic but research and reading doesn't provide straight answers for my questions. I should post in "adopt a noob" thread and seek some parenting there. I have lots of questions and really need some patient soul.

Well, it doesn't mean that you cannot suggest some parts that put together will work just fine.

Cheers.

First thing is you should decide what kind of crawling you wanna do. ie scaler, comp, trail rig, sure there's other types jus a few to name. Then go from there. If you want a comp style then ur gonna wanna look at moa ( motor on axle) style crawler. Scale I would suggest looking at axial scx10 parts same with trail rig. Personally if you wanting to do mostly lower speed crawling I would stay brushed motor. Cheaper to run. If ur wanting speed then id go brush less. I would decide what type of crawling you wanna do first then we'll gladly point you in a good direction for parts and advice. This all jus my .02

I think a kit wraith would be perfect for you. It's a great combination of components and assembling it yourself will help familiarize yourself with how it it all works. The kit also has quite a few components that are better than what comes with the rtr. Your batteries will work fine for it too. If you decide you want something more custom later on, you can sell the cage and build/buy a custom chassis and use the great drivetrain from the wraith.

Also, don't give up flying. I gave up flying for years since balsa models made me too nervous and I am not (and never will be) a good pilot. I started flying again after a found EPP 3d foamies. The EPP foam just bounces when you crash and the "3d" planes can hover (like your helicopter) and do all kind of cool low altitude stuff. I like being able to step out my back door, toss a plane up and fly whenever I want without worrying. I can even fly in a 2 car garage if the weather isn't cooperating. Check out this forum for 3d foamies: 3D Foamies - RC Groups

you should decide what kind of crawling you wanna do

Scaler = scale IRL trucks; comp = competition; trial = just hard terrain (rocks, logs, forest and similar). Did I read that correctly? If not, correct me.

And answering your question, I'm somwhere between scale and trial. I'm no a competition guy but more like "take a rig, go into place and have fun in rough terrain". I'm also not after miniaturisation of IRL stuff. Sure, it looks great (I'm dreaming about Land Rover 109 body) by it isn't a necessity. First it must have a large clearance. I know it will get a high CG but I'm quite picky

if you wanting to do mostly lower speed crawling
Haven't decided yet. I'll do probably something what Wraith offers - rocka racing with a more pressure on crawling. Like I said earlier - it isn't going to be a traditional crawler. It will be rather a universal truck for a hard places. A bit of speed so it can move fairly well on flat and a bit of power and grip to defeat obstacles. Heck, looks like I should get a Wraith

I think a kit wraith would be perfect for you.
Worth considering.

Also, don't give up flying.
I'm not :) I'm just dropping heli. Turned out it's too demanding for me, don't have enough time to practice and weather conditions highly limit my flight opportunities. Besides I was fascinated with mutlirotos along with helis. Just being a complere noob in terms of RC and flying I decided to get a heli first - more knowledge, kits, parts, support. Everything. Back then multirotors were far less developed than today.

So I'm dropping a heli and some day I'll build my own tricopter. I'm totally hot on that for over 2 years. Seriously, I'm waiting for it that long. But meantime I stepped into RC trucks...

Sigh ;-)

Ah, btw. I don't like planes. At all. Maybe simple and fun but not for me. I'll stick to horizontal props

All I can say is WELCOME!!!!

my friend is into heli's too.. he has 9 of them and even gave me one.. i played with it and gave it to my son... he played with it but now done with it.. yes helicopters are fun.. dont get me wrong... but I love the truck scene more...

so with that....
Personally you will start with what you have... your Traxxas... they are fun.. I had t-maxx's... over worked and much money into them...
and I got out... but i got back in..

you will find that there is really no one true rig for everything.. .maybe a good compromise.. but i bet the traxxas will become your hard core fast basher..
then you will want a crawler.... either buggy or truggy...

then it is what scale!!! HAH...

I just got back in recently... guess almost a year now...

im kinda stuck now on the micro stuff.. 1/24 - have 3 losi trekkers and 1 redcat sumo and 1 more trekker in the works...
1/10 crawler (not hardcore but good for me)
1/10 basher (FOFF) still in works...

never ending no matter what you do... you will find it as fun as the heli's... and hopefully break less parts..

once again.. welcome and enjoy.. many good things on this site no matter what platform, scale or type you go with!!!!!!!!!

<Bows in return>

Yeah, helis are awesome. The fact that thing that you built with your own hands rises into the air, stays there and reacts according to you wishes feels... almost primal. It's a human dream of flying come true (in some way ofc). But it requires a lot of time, dedication, love. And of course - money - botomless pit in terms of $$$. Especially when even a minor mistake in flight translate into heavy repair bill.

My Slash, I have it for almost 3 weeks, I ride it every day on rather tough terrain. Mud, sand, water, survived everything without (serious) breaks. Well, scratches on a-arms doesn't count. Sadly, yesterday pinion blew up, literally. Mounting screw area was torn apart and I need to buy a new, or install faster 18t.

So far my truck is far better than my heli - been driving 5 mins after getting it out of the box. And I've been using it rather hard. Comparing to heli - I should have rebuild it like 5 times already.

you will find that there is really no one true rig for everything
Hah, I know that already. Slash fills my need for speed (hehe) on the roads I have where I live. But as I'm bashing I feel I'd gladly turn onto rocks and crawl there. Slash can't do that (well, without serious modifications first) and I need a rig for that. And that's it. I will be fulfilled and I don't need anything else. These two trucks will be enough for my needs.

over worked and much money into them...
I know the pain - I have my truck just 3 weeks and already have big spendings in front of me. Hard driving is punishing a-arms a bit too fast so I need to get new ones fairly soon. Also some a-arms guards to protect suspension from user  (figured out that the ones from Stampede will fit). Also I will need motor radiator/fan, upper cover (anti-splash for electronics to save time on cleaning), maybe bottom cover, new springs... And I want to buy a new rig, silly me...

Cheers.

I would say sounds like the wraith is what you need. From sounds of it you kinda want a lil bit of both worlds for lil bit of speed but can slow down for crawling? If that's the case I would look into rc4wd for the axial two speed tranny. I've seen them run on 35t motors and in low gear they slow down quite a bit and second gear will get up and go. That's my dream tranny once I get the funds. (That jus sounded bad) lol. But id look at that.

Instead of spending all that money on a brushed motor and esc and the 2 speed trans, why not just put it in a good brushless set up and go just as fast and have more torque. The 2 speed has some weak points that need to be addressed. That's what I did, and would do again. That's my opinion.
