Cheap Windows Tablet For ESC Programming

I would drop the windows tablet idea and get a laptop is money is an issue, people give old laptops away, just ask friends and family.

I wouldn't, Surface is phenomenal. Even better than my iPad mini. "thumbsup"
It's a plain-Jane with 128gb of ssd. The keyboard is actually big enough to type...as I write this. ;-)

My 7" tablet has never given me an issue when I need something more than what the field card offers. It's also better on battery life, and easier to travel with than a laptop.

I have a Lenovo laptop already, but I hate using it, it's running Windows 10 on a i3 CPU with 16GB and hardly runs any better than the tablet.

I also have two old laptops that I just got from family after I assisted them in finding upgraded items - they just said, make sure personal data is scrubbed and unload 'em.

One's an i5 Lenovo with a DVD burner (Windows 7. I think), the other is a Gateway still running XP!

I'm frankly curious as to what the local used electronics shop is willing to give me for 'em.

Maybe enough to cover my next round of crawler upgrades...

Personally, I only use my huge stonkin' desktop PC, really dislike laptops in general.

Maybe it's because I used to build the damn things (I built workstations and desktops before that and much preferred it!).

OP wanted a budget tablet, surface is not budget. I have a surface its ok, battery life is crap.

The HP Stream 7 mentioned earlier is on ebay for $70ish, sounds decent.

Yea I'm a desktop guy as well, my 56in monitor doubles as a work light :p

Cost isn't an issue, but I'm not buying a laptop just for Castle Link.

The app I'm talking about is USB, I just checked. I'll test it when I get home within the hour.
I wonder what the cost of the b-link is anyway

I tripled checked the iOS app and it specifically says for the B -Link module only. The B-Link Bluetooth adapters are $50 each.

I wouldent either, I was saying ask friends and family if any one has an old one they would give you for free. People have those laying around. They probably just have no battery life and can only be used plugged in kinda thing.

if money isnt an issue, then I live my surface, but I don't use it nearly as much as I thought I would. Desktop pc doubles as a tv in my man cave, plus I'm a pc gamer so that's always my go to.

My desktop ‘puter was down for the count a couple months back. Wanted to do some tuning on the Mamba-X in the Rock Bouncer. I attempted to install CastleLink on my Surface tablet and it would not accept installation. It said something along the lines of “this program is not supported”. I would look for a smaller, workbook type laptop. You could probably find a smokin deal on one on CL. Nothing special needed if all u want it for is CastleLink.

Strange I haven't tried to load castle link on my surface but I will now

If you guys are talking about the ARM based Surface, then I'm not sure that'll work.

It does install on the Surface Pro based on x86 Intel Chips though.

I have an app called ESC Link on my phone that let's me program all the older castle escs but the mamba x makes it go goofy. The tekin app and a hotwire 2 work great. I only use my PC to program becs and mamba x, the rest is done via my phone.

ESC Link is the app I posted earlier, I haven't tried to program my micro X with it on the shipped firmware, is your firmware the latest?

I doubt it is the latest, I'll update it on my PC and then hook up my phone and see if it still tweaks out.

The ESC Link app doesn't seem to be official. I wasn't willing to try it. If you fry your ESC using that you can kiss your warranty goodbye.

How can updating the firmware fry an esc? Brick it maybe but so far the app just flat works.

Don't be scared homie.

Yeah I meant brick. Sometimes there's no coming back from a hard brick.

If you can confirm it now plays nice with the Mamba X I might roll the dice.

Actually been there, down that. But, it was with two Novak M2s, and after a bunch of us fried them Novak put out as statement saying not to update the firmware.

I'm confused on the MambaX - what's wrong with the Castle interface/update program? I must be missing something.

No surprise with novak, the last 10+ years they were around they were behind the times and their escs were junk.

This app just flat works.

Did you happen to read my original post? :lmao: Nothing is wrong with Castle Link other than I'm looking for an inexpensive Windows tablet to run it on. I'm tired of dragging my cars to my PC.

Sad with Novak because their brushed stuff was some of the best even at the end.

You said the Mamba X makes the app goofy. Does that not happen now?

I haven't been home long enough to update an X and try it on my phone yet. When I hook up an X my phone screen glitched and a "can't communicate" message pops up. Now that I think about it I wonder if the phone just doesn't put out enough juice to power up the esc's brain. I should be home early enough tonight to try hooking a battery up while its plugged in.
