Actually those are terrazo counter tops, or a cultured stone, which is a mix of natural stone and some form of epoxy/grout(if poured in place). There are even solid surface(polymer compund like Corian Brand) versions which have more synthetic products used in the manufacture process. You can see it in the individual stones inbedded in the epoxy. These are a cheaper version of natural stone but give you the feel and look of natural stone/granite. My experience with synthetic tops is staining, but with care and maintanence you can keep them look great for decades, great inexpensive alternative. In fact so much so, alot of people prefer the synthetic option! And Terrazo has been used for along time in floors of churches and synygogues(sp) I could go into it much deeper, but not in this thread.. LOL
