Cesco RC crawler garage and scale accessoiries

Well, it was on my wish list for a long time. A 1/10 scale garage.

A couple of years ago I started with just some scale items and made myself a Wild Willy pitcrew.
At that time I was building mostly Tamiyas, especialy Wild Willy 2s. Scalers and crawlers came much later.

So in this topic I will show progress of my scale garage, but I will start with the beginning. And a proper introduction.
I bought someone elses build styrene workbenches on Ebay and some other scale garage stuff.

Repaired it (was not much left of it when it got delivered), painted it and put a wooden top on the workbench. Then some accessories to fill up the shelves.
I made myself a Wild Willy pitcrew. The usual Osbourne body, Wild Willy mod. I was not the first one to do this.

And that was it for then. At that moment that was enough to have it in the background when I made some RC photos.

So lets start with some photos of what I did then.

Then all of a sudden Wild Willy got interested in crawlers and scalers with his girlfriend Wanda.

And that was when first complains started by the Wild Willy pitcrew. Frank (aka Cesco) can you please build us a bigger garage. A couple of years later and many scaler / crawler builds later i could not ignore them no longer. So I will build them a proper scale garage. Where they have enought room for all their builds, all there hobbies, their tools, enough work space, might even have space for a office, somewhere they can rest and who knows even have room for a store. The little rascals have a lot of wishes I am affraid.


On a serious note. I am affraid they already ordered a lot of stock and we do not even have a building yet. Oh oh....

Anyway, there was always something in between, other projects to do. And where do you leave a scale garage?
And the pit crew started to insist more and more, and it is true that they didn't have much space.

So....
The place has now been found and quite a bit too. Will come on a desk that is no longer in use. In my office / sometimes Youtube studio.

It will be a slow or longer build, I have read all of the scale garage build topics here, and watched a bunch of Youtube videos and saw a lot in facebook groups. So the necessary inspiration is found. I will add elements from my 1/1 garage and RC workshop. Especially in terms of look and feel of materials and colors.

Choice of materials is of course huge and the possibilities are endless. Thinking up a bit of a plan is useful.
I have styrene at hand, 2 3D printers and enough filament, wood and paint has been obtained, so there are plenty of possibilities. Broadly determined the looks and interpretation, as well as the size. But we will also see as it goes.

Ok, enough intro. Time to start.

Normally you start with the floor and walls, of course. But those little rascals of a pitcrew started to order stock and supplies from the moment I said. ok, I will build a scale garage. :laugh:

No, seriously, with all the curent Corona virus, it will take me a couple of days before I can get materials for the floor and walls.

Meanwhile i have 2 3d printers and enough filament. Let's put them to good use.


Of course, wood is obvious as a material for the garage itself, for example MDF. However, foam is often used for walls and everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Finally decided to go for MDF. But first I took the time to read this forum and other mentioned places. In the meantime I could of course put the 3D printers to work. So that is where this starts. We start with making some scale items for in the scale garage.

One day I come in the pitcrews workshop and I see this just got delivered.... :wow:

No, the first thing I made is a rack with all engine oil / coolant / grease cans and bottles and stuff. Designed a rack. All the 3D printed various cans, bottles and aerosols are mostly Thingiverse files. I resized, remoddeld some, then painted them. Made labels, used some decals from my scale decal collection and glued everything together.

Given the quantity, you might understand why I went the 3D printing route instead of styrene.
The chrome is done with a chrome paint marker from the Molotow brand.

Then immediately continue with a rack full of batteries. Again a combination of 3D printing, paint, labels printed on photo paper. Same style and design for the rack as the previous one, but I made it twice as wide, a little taller end the shelfes a bit deeper.

Batteries are all 3D print files collected over time and designing yourself therefore had little added value. There are numerous already designed by others. With this came a nice diversity of models And not hard to remoddel and resize them so you end up with a even bigger diversity of batteries. Making labels is a matter of finding the right angled photos. And then simply made the labels the right scale size in Word 1/10). Before printing them on photo paper and glued them on with transparent Shoe Goo.

So, let's get started.

Ultimately, this is the end result. All batteries are glued to the shelves, so that the entire rack is easy to move.

The next item I had in mind was a pallet full of scale items, as if it had just been delivered by the supplier.

I had had a wooden pallet for some time, nicely the right scale size. Once sat under a notepad.
So that was done quickly. You have to use what you have after all.

Then several things 3D printed, I had a vision in my head of some oil barrels and the like that have just been delivered.
Once I dived into my stock of decals to see what I could use. So different oil barrels printed, painted, stickered and supplemented with 2 boxes from the photo in the starting post. I had once made them from pasted smartie boxes. Another large jerry can 3D printed and everything on the pallet wrapped in cling film. Send etiquette designed and printed on photo paper.

Redcat and brands like Axial and Element RC, RC4WD and Proline all have papercraft on their websites. I will also make good use of that, starting with a Redcat box. Just a matter of downloading, printing on photo paper or +/- 160grams printing paper, cutting, folding and pasting and you have a scale box. Same story with Element RC, also made of a papercraft box and added to the pallet.

The end result.

So far mainly a bit of making some scale garage items, but the construction of the garage itself will start very soon. It is of course nice to have some scale accessories ready to dress up the garage a bit.

It is pretty simpel to make them. Just look for photos on the internet that will show the label not angled. Then download the photo. Resize it so you are just left with the label. Then i imported the labels in Microsoft Word, resized them to 1/10 and printed them on photo paper.

The Wild Willy box is just a Smarties mini candy boxes used inside out. And then covered in Wild Willy/Wild Willy 2 decals (official and some non official ones I think I got from from Ebay). Theze candy boxes are just the right size.

Meanwhile, the 3D printers pump out one print after the other. Because the next scale item was already planned.

If you are going to do a lot of builds, the pit crew will of course also need regular paint. So called a representative of Motip and had a rack of Motip paint delivered. (Motip is a brand of aerosol automotive paints and lubricants)

Of course I had to make it myself in real live. Design of the paint rack comes from Thingiverse, but I did change the file a lot. I found it quite narrow. I have 3D printed aerosols in 2 sizes in different colors. The smaller aerosols are gonna be used for a Tamiya scale paint rack later. I have translated the sizes of a Motip and a Tamiya aerosol to 1/10 scale. Counted how many colors I wanted, how many fits in a row and how many next to each other. Adjusted the rack size to fit everything I had in my head.

Same story as before with making labels, only now using regular printing paper because otherwise photo paper would become too thick. After all, it must also be glued with the curvature of the spray can. Each aerosol is painted with the Molotow chrome paint pen. Then painted each nozzle cap. Color aerosols themselves just left the filament color. Simply change the filament color for another color option. And then put the very tiny Motip labels on each aerosol. Glue was not such a success, much too tiny to apply. It went best with transparent adhesive tape and immediately gave a shine look.

With superglue and precision, each aerosol is carefully pasted neatly in rows on the planks with tweezers.

Ultimately, this is the result:

Oh and if you're wondering. That's 70 aerosols! So very tedious.

I had thought that it is also nice to have a shelf with some trophies on the wall somewhere. Later I will make the shelf out of some wood or styrene, but I have already made the trophies. I know that it doesn't seem like a logical order, but you have a floor and walls assembled fairly fast. All scaling of the garage is what takes a lot of time, so all that is already made can go in the garage asap.

So again looking for 3D print files, I found quite a few that were suitable. Obviously nothing to scale, so took measurements in 1/1, scaled down to 1/10. And then I found RC logos and did a great mix and match in either drawing program. or parts printed separately and made something new the parts with glue and paint. Both normal filament and transparent used. And that results into this:

Is it time to build the garage itself? Well, almost. In the next post.

First some preparations. Two elements that I want to take from my own 1/1 garage.
First visible bricks. Well there are many techniques to do that.

For example, you can use foam walls and carve bricks with a knife and pencil point. Paint does the rest for a nice brick look. You can also do this with MDF with a Dremel. You can get started with styrene. You can make a mold and work with real bricks. You have diorama sheets with stone look that you can stick on. Or in my case, use the 3D printer to make some. I also wanted to create some depth and 3D effect. A flat wall that is interrupted with a brick part that comes out of the wall. At least if that makes sense.

Before I started designing myself, I had to check whether someone has already done the design work. Found a basic file on Thingiverse of a wall that you can put together to make a longer wall. A interlocking system. Then made numerous variations of this in my drawing program. And started to 3D print them. I found a spray can at my local hardware store that will mimmick the stone effect and desired color. Before spraying I will look for a few more suitable stones with a nice relief. And then heat it up a little and add some relief to the 3d printed stones. Stamping, as it were. To get a a bit more texture.

Another thing I want incorperate are the looks of the black/white tiles floor in my 1/1 garage. So I designed some, scaled it to 3x3cm and started printing. These will not cover the entire floor of the scale garage, but will partly.


Here I am laying out the black printed ones to get a feel for the looks.

The plan is to put these on the floor in a corner or on the sides. I will probably glue it on with Shoe Goo or some hotglue. I will need around 150 of them.

Those look very different. The smarties over here in Europe are more a M&M kinda candy. Also chocolate inside, sugar coating outside.

Well, then it is time to start measuring, sawing, gluing, screwing and painting. Time for the base, the garage itself.

Decided to go for an MDF base. easily available and easy to process. Considered to use foam plates for the walls, but ultimately opted for MDF. So went to the hardware store early in the morning and collected all supplies. I will also regularly use the garage for photos and occasionally as a backdrop for YouTube videos, so I opted for a sturdy material.

The size is also determined, 140cm wide, 70 cm deep and 56cm high. Quite a large scale garage, but this way I can also have a useful floor space if I want to make videos.
How and if I will do a roof I am not yet sure. I am going to do the floor and walls first, then put everything in the conceived place and see how I end up with a camera from above. And then I decide roof or not. In any case, there will be some sort of beam structure.

For the looks I am a bit between old and new. Something that reflects the look of my 1/1 garage, but bigger. I have an idea in my head of an older building that has been renovated and where a more modern look goes hand in hand with elements retained after renovation.
Nice and vague all :mrgreen:. But if you've seen my 1/1 garage in the showroom here on the forum and then think about adding some stone, wood and industrial elements, you might understand where I want to go.

Anyway, build!

I want to build it so that I can easily take it apart and put it back together again. In case it has to be moved around. But also for weight, because with this size and choice of wood as the basis. Will soon give some weight as a total. So I came up with something to easily disassemble and assemble the walls.

Here we go.

Tidy workbench in the 1/1 garage. Not the definitive stand, but the place where the scale garage will be built. I had everything cut to size at the hardware store, so I could have as much floor and walls cut to size from a very large MDF panel of 12mm thick.

Walls slide into the slots and stand on their own.

And add some more beams to make sure that the back wall and the side walls also interlock in the corners.
It is now completely independent, completely screwless. If I make a roof construction, that is still to determine. But then I will at least make a similar clamping system as now in the floor. And then everything is put together without 1 screw and also the walls can be removed quickly. I will also place everything independently as modules when designing.


The beams also immediately provide a beam / column look. And already gives some depth.

What you have read so far has been the work of several weeks. But the base is now beginning to progress.

And then it is time to start painting the garage. I still had some white paint left, so that will be the base color for the outside and the primer for the inside of the walls. And this takes time, painting, drying, new coat and so on.

At the local hardware store I found some matt chalk-looking paint, so that is painted on the inside of the walls for a plastered wall kinda look.

The floor will also be painted, although for a part there will be the 3D printed floor parts. Where the cars will be, I want to go for a look of a concrete floor with an epoxy layer over it. So easiest for now is to paint the entire floor with a paint roller. Bought some anthracite lacquer from the hardware store. I left this for a while.

Normally you have to stir the paint well, I have not done this on purpose. As a result, the paint base and ingredients started to seperate from each other. After careful mixing a bit, I was left with a paint that was partly light gray, partly anthracite and partly black with some white parts through it. Rolling this resulted in a concrete effect. In the end, the color is fairly uniform in color, but you also see color and shade differences. And in real life it looks like a somewhat darker polished version of a concrete floor. Weathering the easy way! :mrgreen:

In the photos, the paint is still wet and the effect is not quite reflected in the photos yet.
