Brx70 PHAT Axles on an SCX10 Chassis

Good evening fellow R/C community.

I am starting to gather information for a build I would like to do in the future. Just gaining some information.

I have always liked the Carisma F150 body. For a lexan body, the two piece body has some decent detail and it is formed in the beloved Dentside variety, of which I love. From what I have heard, it runs a bit on the narrow side.

That leads me to this question. Has anyone installed the Boom Racing Brx70 PHAT Axles on an SCX10 chassis? If so, please post up some pics, I would love to see what it looks like and what kind of build you came up with.

A little more research and I found a picture in a thread, in the Traxxas section where a guy used MST-MSA axles for a CMX on a Carisma chassis and it turned out great.

The axles he used are 166mm hex to hex and I believe the Brx70 PHAT Axles ate 148.5mm pin to pin, so they may even be a bit too narrow for the Carisma F150 body.

Maybe the BRX80 would be a better choice at 162mm pin to pin.

Any thoughts?

Also take into account what offset wheels and what tire widths you are wanting to run...

Deep dish RC4WD spokers would look great on that body - and since they have 3mm negative offset you'd get some "poke" back.

The tires in that pic above are pretty narrow, kinda like what you see on most TF2 builds.

Great project, in my opinion - always liked that updated version of the Carisma Ford.
 
Thanks durok. I was thinking about that too. I think the BRX80 is going to get me real close to what I’m looking for.

I’d like to keep the electronics fairly simple and I likely have what’s needed at the house, other than a lighting kit.
A simple 3 gear transmission, possibly something more scale down the road.
I’ll keep the tires in the sub-4” size. I have a couple sets of those too.
Wheels, I could go lots of different ways on this one, but I think SSD Slot Mags would look great, as would steel spokes.

I really wanted to do this with my Gen8 AXE, but it’s a no go with the wide portal axles.

Once it gets kicked off, it should be a fun project.

I have done a few narrow-axle SCX10-based builds. I've used a couple of different narrow AR44-style axles on them. In addition to the Boom Racing BRX70 PHAT axles, I've also used the Beef Tubes narrowed AR44's. The BRX70's are VERY narrow. I don't know how wide that Carisma body is, but I have a feeling that the BRX70's are going to be way too narrow unless you want the wheels to be completely under the wheel wells for a very stock/street truck look.


I use the Beef Tubes Narrowed AR44's on full-size SCX10 rigs to get a more scale appearance - like the poorly-proportioned Pro-Line Gladiator body.





I also use the Beef Tubes Narrowed AR44's on little 10" WB bodies - like the ProLine Sumo. I think they are a better fit for a more hardcore crawler-style rig.






But I used the BRX70's on this Early Bronco rig. I wanted more of a stockish look on this one, and the body is really pretty narrow - so the BRX70's worked well.


















These 10" WB rigs of mine are built on a custom flat-rail chassis called the "Zukosaurus" that is made by a RCC member Utieh. The Zukosaurus is designed to use SCX10II components - so the chassis rails are the same width, but the length is obviously cut down, and the boatsides are trimmed a little to accommodate the narrower body width of the ProLine Sumo or Tamiya Bronco.

Thanks for all the pictures, it helps a ton. My BRXL80’s showed up and they might be too wide.
I bolted my set of 3.85” tall tires, that are mounted on 5 lug white spokes.

It looks like they might still stick out. I am wanting them to tuck into the fenderwells when it articulates.
I’ll know for sure if they are too wide once I cut the body and will be able to see what other width looks like.

I know it’s not what you were expecting but I think it’ll be fine. That little bit of poke it has will really make for a perfect stance, IMHO.

Honestly, wasn’t sure what to expect, so I pulled the trigger on a few parts just to see where it all landed. I agree, Amy rig running 38” to 42” tires will have a little poke. If it works out that I want to do something different, I’ll definitely shoot you a PM.

I really need to cut the wheelewells out and see where they land on the tires.
 
why not change the hex hub on the wheel to bring the offset in ... also a slim hex at the axle stub helps... you can at least move them in 3-6 mm with a combo of these 2. usually 225 hubs work for me.

Thanks, that is a good idea. The stock hexes are pretty narrow, but I am not sure the thickness of the hubs. I’ll look into that if needed.
 
If you are using RC4WD white spoke wheels as in the pictures, they make a narrower hub that can be swapped in - they call it the Narrow Stamped Steel Wheel Pin Mount 6-Lug, and they have a 5-Lug version as well. Then you don't use any hexes at all!

There's a note regarding their use:

"Please note this hub is designed to narrow the offset of our steel wheels. These will not work on Axial SCX10 and SCX10 II axles due to fitment on the axle threads.
Please note these hubs will require a washer or spacer when mounting on Axial Axles due to different depth of the threads."
