Boston Crawlers will be hosting our 2011 Heartbreak Hammers Event. This is a rock race designed around the legendary King of the Hammers race. It will be held in the Breakheart Reservation, in Wakefield MA, on October 22nd. You can GPS to 166 Hemlock Rd, Wakefield Ma, Registration will begin at 10:00 with the race beginning at 10:30.

This event is open to all competitors, scale, 2.2, and misc. Last year a stock competition rig won the event. Just be sure your rig complies with the regulations, and most importantly have fun with it. This is not a high pressure event, its just to drive a crazy course, maybe make a crazy vehicle, and definitely have a good time.

The rules are posted below but the highlights are:
This is an unlimited event. Wheeled vehicles with a track width no greater than 16"
Terrain will be varied, over grass, gravel, and rocky terrain.
Vehicles should be capable of light 2.2 style crawling, nothing a stock AX10 with a descent set of tires couldn't do.
There will be several checkpoints and vehicles will be timed, no gates.

This is a Free event! no entry fee or parking fee required.
Prizes will be given out to the top 3 drivers (lowest time) and we will have a bunch of door prizes for the drivers. Many thanks to all our sponsors: Castle Creations, Panther Products, Axial, Losi, and Tekin.

The location and course map for this event are posted below. We encourage all interested in racing to visit the area and walk, or drive the course. This will give you a better sense of direction on the day of the event. No pre-running will be allowed the day of the event, but the course will be open for participants to walk before registration.

OFFICIAL RULES!

2011 HeartBreak Hammers Rules:

Vehicle specifications:

Maximum of 16" track width
No gas or nitro power. Electric only
Must be wheel/tire powered. No tank treads, robot legs, hovercraft, etc.
Any suspension, chassis, body, drivetrain, wheel/tire combo can be used.
Any driver using a non spread spectrum radio/receiver has to list their frequency when registering.

Driver:

Must follow vehicle via foot. No bicycles, 4 wheelers, helicopters, etc.
All on course technical support has to be done by the driver. No repair teams on course.
All repairs must be completed by the driver on course i.e. no returning to starting pit.
On course, drivers are not allowed to climb or jump from any object higher than waist level. (Vehicles are unlimited).

Course layout:

.5 mile sprint (point to point) with a total of 3 checkpoints. Terrain varies from loose dirt/gravel to novice level 2.2 crawling terrain.
2 Drivers will leave side by side in 30 second intervals and will all be racing on the course at the same time.
If a driver is not in the starting grid for his/her starting time they will be moved to the end of the order and receive a 30 second time penalty.
Drivers must go through all the checkpoints in the intended order or they will receive a DNF.
The winner is determined by the fastest completion of the course with all checkpoints.

Driving rules:

This is purely based on time unlike a 2.2 crawler competition.
The driver must follow his/her vehicle throughout the course.
Reversing does not accrue any points or penalties.
If a truck flips and can not right itself, a 2.2 competition style roll over can be administered by the driver.
If a truck becomes stuck and can not right itself or be flipped, a vehicle touch can be administered but must be placed with no further forward progress. Example: if a truck becomes wedged between a rock, the driver can remove and place back on the course as long as it has not made forward progress.
Drivers seen placing their tuck ahead, or otherwise making forward progress via a touch will receive a DNF.

With all drivers/vehicles on course vehicle to vehicle contact is allowed/expected(see list of examples).
Any malicious vehicle to vehicle contact or driver to driver contact will receive a DNF(See list of examples).
Any unintended contact of the driver and or vehicle to a spectator or any person who is not racing will receive a DNF(See list of examples).

Contact examples:

Normal racing bumping/rubbing is allowed. Example: side of the vehicle to side of the vehicle, light front to back contact.
Bumping of a slower vehicle by a faster vehicle is allowed if slower vehicle does not yield to the faster vehicle aka "nerfing".
Driving over a stuck vehicle is allowed.

Malicious bumping/ramming of a vehicle to veer a vehicle off course is not allowed and DNF will occur. Example: T-boning another vehicle so it flips or crashes or forcing a vehicle off course.

Intentionally contacting another driver is a DNF. Example: Shoving another driver out of the way.

Contacting any driver or anyone else on course is acceptable for aiding/safety purposes. Example: if someone is falling/slipping.
Any contact to spectators and other people on course for anything other than aid is a DNF. This rule is in place because the course will be open to the public while it is run. We do not want any contact of vehicles or drivers to hikers or innocent bystanders.

This event is Rain or Shine (with the exception of Extreme weather) please plan and dress accordingly.

It may seem like a lot of rules but they are all here to ensure everyone has A lot of fun. Lats year there were no problems, no one was hurt, and everyone had a great time. This year promises to be better.

Please post any questions.

I know my truck will make a .5 mile but me is what I'm worried about, my fat ass hasn't ran that in forever!Would my new wraith be a good vehicle to use?

you can do this race in pretty much whatever you would like. The hardest sections I'd say are doable with a wraith(even tho ive never driven one). And making trucks stupid fast isnt really a big deal cuz they are only as fast as you are willing to follow behind. this def isnt a high pressure type race. more about doing something different and fun.

Hey Eli,

It is all about having fun. That being said last year I did a little practice running before hand so I could whoop Brendan and I won the whole event : O. Good driving, a steady pace, and a bombproof rig is all you need.

I WILL BE THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOWOOOOOOOOO!!!!! WOT in it to win it!!!!

Now its getting interesting.

Here is a picture of my bonkers concept for hammers. Also working on something else too.

It is a Torque design chassis, no suspension, no 4 link, all twist.

I smell a laser cutter and breakage all in the same post.

Acrylic, Plexiglas or lexan?

Ahh ha ha you have a keen sense of smell....

It is currently acrylic but that was just to check the concept/ geometry and it was cheap, fast, and easy. Going to be moving to polycarbonate of acetal once I am happy with it.

*Added for comedic value* The acrylic is not very strong at all (as I anticipated, so don.t give me a hard time). Just snapped the chassis when I drove into the stair too fast :p

The only thing I see that I would change is roll the rear axle up some.

With the ground clearance you have I can just see the motor being the one thing that locks you up on a break over.

Other then that ....... I think you got a good idea going. "thumbsup"

Looks interesting Brian, no body though? I guess if roll-overs don't count it doesn't matter! Would like to make it, we'll see if it's possible. Don't think I'll make it to the top on one battery though!

I may run some kind of body, still thinking about the concept.

You would be surprised how far 800mAh can go. I only use 150-250mah during a 10 minute comp. I ran the whole hammers race last year on one battery. You can always change your battery halfway through if you run out. That being said, if there is someone that only has one battery and is concerned about finishing let me know and I would be happy to loan some out.

Might have the mud truck running by then,7t on 3s. Running the comp rig either way.

Another Maybe

Working on another rig that may run the Gauntlet next Saturday.

1/8 scale buggy with locked diffs.
Narrowed 40 series wheels with Pro-Line trenchers and memory foam.
2200kv brushless on 3 cell.
Currently full independent suspension, but thinking about something hybrid.

Current stance = short and fat : p

Might not do any good but at least fun to build and hopefully drive.

Monster

Got some more work done on the 1'8th scale abomination. Cut the rear half of the chassis off, and remounted with 4 link.

Final product is a Cruggy (that's Crawler Buggy) that is 4 wheel drive, with locked diffs, independent front and rear suspension, with about 25 degrees of articulation (in each direction). It should be about 25mph with a 3 cell, and up near 50mph on a 6 cell. I can't run even close to 25mph so we will see how this turns out.

Hope to see you all next Saturday.

Coming Soon

This event is coming up fast. The Current forecast is looking good.

Note that registration is at 10:00 and the racing will kick off at 10:30. This is not your typical day of competitions. We expect that the race will be over by 11:30, and with prizes and such we should be done with the event by Noon. So those of you that don't have the whole day free, maybe you can still squeeze this in.

Will probably grab a bite to eat and such afterwards for those who are interested.
