Bomber Crawler Rock Racer MOTOR?

Hello all. I am getting ready to build a Bomber Kit Version. My Question is, I have a Son with a Yeti 380 and a Friend with a Wraith Spawn set up just as a crawler. I am looking for a motor, ESC and setup that will do both. What are your recommendations and Budget is around $200-$240 and I will consider a 2 speed if need be. Will run mostly 2-3s lipos.

So in Short I will be Crawling with my Buddy and I will be Trailing-bashing with my Son. Whats the Best options. I am new to this all so please Be patient with me.

If you're staying out the water, I'd go with a Castle MMP and a Holmes Puller Pro 3500kv. Hard to beat this setup.

I have a hard time recommending the Castle MMX with my never ending issues, but it's the best dual use (bashing and crawling) ESC on the market right now because you can toggle the drag brake on the fly. I still prefer my Tekin ROC412 3100kV motor over my Holmes Hobbies Puller Pro 3500kV, but they're both good motors.

I did just get my Castle 1410-3800kv sensored motor in yesterday. I'll be swapping that in to get a comparison. At $85, coupled with $100 MMP, would like be a great setup.

The newest Mamba X and the HH 3500kv would be a great choice as well - Holmes will waterproof the motor for about $10 more and the EC has all the MMX features (including adjustable drag brake on the fly, factory waterproofing) and is smaller/lighter.

This sounds awesome!

I also like the MMX because of the ability to toggle drag brake but didn't want to spend that much.

I run a hobbywing sct combo 3400KV sensored.

My vote, the new Mamba X and a Holmes 2700kv on 3s to crawl and 4s to bash with stock gearing. I run an MMX with a 2200kv on 3s and 4s but I like things a bit slower for my crawler Bomber especially in the technical stuff. I also run an MMX and Holmes 3500kv on 3s and 4s in my IFS Bomber and it's a total ripper but you have to be careful with 4s on the 3500kv motor. I have my max throttle limited to 90% On my radio settings to avoid exceeding maximum rpm. So far so good after several months of hard driving fun.

Screamer, for an on the fly option, what would you say on a 2700 or 3500 in a 2 speed instead of having to swap batteries for crawling / bashing? I know 2 speed adds the extra risk of failure, but seems like it would provide the most versatility? Or perhaps no 2 speed and just different throttle curves on the radio that you could switch on the fly?

After using my battery swap method for the last year, I'd never run a two speed, that's just me. Another servo, two speed mechanicals, more weight, possible failure like you said. It literally takes me less than 30 seconds to swap a battery and I always carried an extra before anyway. I'm not going back and forth all day long, it's more of a, I swap if things start to slow down, type of thing. I'm usually running 4s with 3s as my spare/backup/low speed crawling option. I was pretty surprised at how controllable 4s is at low speeds. I do have 40% throttle expo set on my remote for the 3500kv combo and 25% expo set on my remote for the 2200kv combo.

If I had to chose one of those options to pair with a two speed, it would definitely be the 3500kv. If I understand correctly, low speed is much lower geared than stock and high speed is just slightly higher so the 3500kv would work best I think.

Thank you all for your Responses. I am looking into your Suggestions. Im leaning towards Sensored Brushless. From a few You Tube Builds, they say that will help with the Needs of Crawl and Bash vs 2 speed. Not 100% effective, But cheaper and less to go wrong. Thank you for your Advice..

MMP vs MX what are the differences? I looked but could not find specifics.
Best option with the Tekin ROC12 3100KV vs pro4 hd 3000kv. What about the Mamba X with a Castle Sensored Motor? They have them on their site.
I am looking at Holmes Hobbies and will call them Monday and see what they can do. Just wanting some sound Advice.

Thank you all for your time..

MMP is Castle's original production sensored esc. Great esc. Mamba X or Mamba Monster X would be their update esc with better technology, waterproofing, and a programmable AUX for a quick comparison. The MMP is still a very robust and widely used esc and can be picked up for around $100 right now.

Pro4HD is a longer motor than the Roc412, should equal motor torque. However both motors have been used successfully in the Bomber. Tekin will be releasing a Roc412HD soon as well.

Castle's sensored motors are new releases and yet to be tested. Most applicable motor here would be the 1410-3800kv. I just received mine in the mail Wednesday. I plan on testing soon but building a house is currently getting in the way.

Holmes stuff is great! The BLE esc he sells a pretty much a MMP but built to his specs and programmed accordingly. The Puller Pro motors are fantastic and have great low speed control and start up. Holmes made them for this reason basicallly.

Overall, you're looking at quality stuff in all these options and I don't think you'll be upset. For lipo's, I'd suggest SMC packs if you're looking for new.

I run the 3100 4x4HD with my MMP , on a yeti. The 412 would work better on the lighter bomber, although Jato had a nitemare with that and the MMX. The new MX is replacing the MMP
castle did update the firmware since Jatos fight

Hang up and Drive

Sensored brushless hands down! Dont look any other route.

That stated, dont get too caught up in the high dollar setups. I have been VERY VERY happy with my Hobbyking X-CAR 80amp esc and sensored motor. Running a 17.5T motor for 1.5hrs straight the speed control doesnt get more than slightly warm to the touch WITHOUT the fan on it.

78 bucks total for a motor / esc setup thats programmable with a 5 dollar usb cable dongol, and another 10 bucks for some conformal coating to make it fully waterproof.

Are you running yours in a Bomber? If so are you climbing and bashing? what kind of speed are you getting and with what motor.. Reason being my Kid has a Yeti 380 with stock motor. I just want to be able to bash with him also. Thx for all the wonderful input."thumbsup"

So you got the 3800kv motor Sensored Castle motor? If so is it pretty quick? Im also looking to be able to bash around with my Son and his Yeti. Thank you for your response...

The 3800 will be pretty fast especially on 3s. You'll have no problem running around with the Yeti speed wise, handling wise you're screwed.

Just finished installing HH trailmaster 3300 kv, with the momba X esc. stock bomber gearing 12 x 64 I believe. tested on the rock crawling course at a local shop and it performed good. speed wise in the steet pulls front tires off the ground and sounds like a jet taking off. Puts a big smile on my face, will test against friends yeti and see how it compares. only ran it so far on 3s. 2s would slow it down for more technical climbing just couldn't stop running the speed tests :ror:

Tested against friends Yeti he has the 2 speed trans with over drive 3 s yeti was faster than bomber. Yeti on 2 s against bomber on 3s bomber was quicker, also on bomber had 5.7 inch tires so i figured that made up alittle difference against the 2 speed trans on yeti with the 5.5 tires. Give the kid 2s on yeti and you should stay ahead motor and ecs on the bomber was around 200 total should keep you in your budget. Keep the drag brake low on the combo to start 50% shattered front ring gear third test down street let of and it looked like a gymnast doing flips in the street. Hope this helps
