Hello RCC! I have been out of Rc for the last few years but I'm getting that itch again. I want to build a bomber so, I figured I would chat with the community and fload some ideas/thoughts and get some input. For now this won't really be a build thread though that may be the case in the future. I'm thinking of selling/trading a yeti so I can get a bomber kit sooner rather than later. I built an amazing wraith that I loved but has since been sold when I hit some rough times as you do so I have some knowledge and I'm a bit of a research monkey when it comes to purchases such as this and how I want to build them. By once cry once :D

On to the vehicle! I want to start with the kit I have no interest in the stock electrics or I wouldn't mind getting a roller/slider. Upgrades I know I would get regardless, I would like full VQ links, incision spools, MIP drive lines, VQ universals, beadlock wheels and I'm sure there is more but off hand those are deffinit decisions made things.

Now for stuff I'm more on the fence about choices. For the electronics the speed controller I've been looking at the Tekin Rx4 its nice to see they finally added water proofing but I'm leaning more towards the Momba monster X because that Auxilery which i would use for on the fly drag break adjustment to make switching from crawling to speed easier. For the motor and servo I'm pretty well set on Holmes hobbies I've had amazing experiences with their products in the past and a servo that doesnt need a bec and runs on 11V yes please! I have not decided on a servo yet which leads me to another thing I'm debating on if I want 4ws or not. I've seen a couple vids with 4ws on a bomber and it looks pretty sweet (to me) I just cant decide if I want to do it. Oh, I should point out my use for this vehicle is my enjoyment/the enjoyment of anyone I happen to let drive it so comp regulations mean nothing to me I want a fun capable truck. I should aslo say this is going to be the first of my getting back into rc addiction more than likely I would love to build a second one on a UCfab chassis in the future as well along with a 1.9 rig of some kind with a dig unit :D
If I don't go 4ws I will get a stage one kit from VQ if I go 4ws I will get all the parts from VQ as well.

Let's see what else is there well the radio system I'm thinking of going spektrum Dx5pro I know a lot of people hate spektrum but my experience with them has always been pretty good and the prive on that radio is nice especially for a 5 channel. I'm still debating though if I should go with a futaba i think its a 4pv. Some stuff I would really like some info on is tires people recomend I used to run pitbulls a lot and I was hoping to get some info on Crawler innovation foams. I'm wondering if I should go 2 stage or just get single stage closed cell foams. I will be doing a lot slow speed/high speed mixing it up because I love crawling and rock bouncing.

Please feel free to post with suggestions/thoughts I should be on at least once a day to read and respond :D

Looks good
I'm pretty sure the Mamba X is enough for any Puller Pro motor from HH, no need for the monster.

Most needed upgrade is a set of rod ends to replace the axial garbage. I recommend the RPM Revo rod ends with axial width balls on Amain Hobbies.

You need to add at least a motor mount and possibly the VP stage 1 kit for knuckles and c-hubs.

Also get some good sealed bearings like fast eddy or avid.

I didn't mention rod ends but those are part of the link kits from VQ im totally with you though deffinitly an upgrade thats worth having, also I would do VQ trailing arms didn't mention that.

For the stage one kit it depends on if I go with 4 wheel steering or not I wont need the lockouts if I go that route. Otherwise yes a definit upgrade along with a metal servo mount that stock one has some hardcore flex from what I've seen.

If I get the kit I will certainly get a fast eddy bearing set to use during the build if I end up getting a roller I think I will replace as need or during a big maitenance binge

I will look at the mamba x I did not realize it also had the Aux cable thank you.

Bomber kit is the way to go! You will find that with it you won't need most of the VP upgrades you mention at least until you have a problem with the stock parts.

Mamba X (not Monster) ESC is what you want especially because of the Auxiliary Wire like you said.

I love Spektrum. Most people that complain about them never actually owned one. I will say my FlySky GT-5 is also nice.

Pit Bull tires or Proline are the best. I like Proline foams in Proline tires.

As far as spektrum goes I feel like a lot of the hate is from when they werent very good years and years ago but that stigma is still around. I had the dx4 and I prefered it to my futaba because it was so much easier to program and I like the shark fin antenna because they can survice a drop. That is also something I find funny though is that people complain that spektrums are to light so it feels cheap. I agree that most of them are super light I never got cheap from that though and it being lighter means it will take less damage from a fall more than likely. I dropped my futaba once and ended up having to ship it back for repairs never had an issue with the spektrum. I'm not bashing futaba by any means it was a great radio I just liked my spektrum more its all about personal preferance.

I like pitbulls but I really like the proline tires because alot of them have treads on the sides which was a downside to the pitbull you had very little side bite with them. One of the main reasons I'm looking at CI foams is the waterproof aspect of single cell becuase I enjoy running in water also single cells from what I understand don't get hardcore flatspots if you store your truck on its tires lol

Tires are good in the kit but CI foams are pretty much required.
I bought Goodyear MT/R and aluminum wheels as a backup for when I break a plastic wheel or get bored.

For links, I would recommend a nice set from JEC Racing, the machine work craftsmanship is insane and stainless trailing arms are sexy!

Again, it's a matter of personal taste, I am more of an upgrade kind of guy so I like replacing parts all the time and not just when it breaks.

I went with a Radiolink RC4GS radio and it's awesome for 50$.

+1 on the JEC Racing trailing arms. I have the 7075 alum set, stainless is cool too. I tried the VP trailing arms but just didn’t like the ends and their silly adjustable grub thing they have going on. Too complex. The JEC arms just use stout and tested Revo ends. Swap them out when they get sloppy. Easy and strong.

Hadn’t heard any mention of a Beef Tubes for your AR60s. A small investment for some good strength and well placed weight. I run brass upfront, Alum in rear.

Oh yeah forgot about the beeftubes, it's a must if you don't want aluminum housings and plan to run big power.
I did the same, brass front and aluminum rear.

I've never heard of JEC I will look into them I've always like Vanquish products thats what i was looking at for links. And Jboucher I'm very much an upgrade kind of person as well so i get it part of why I made this so i can build the truck with a bunch of upgrades from the get go.

What are peoples thoughts on getting a stage one vs rolling 4wd?

I guess 4ws is for competitive crawling?
Stage 1 is durable and simple. I like it.

4ws i think is not aloud or incures penalties on most comps. its just a way to make a truck more capable though not to mention you can crab :D

A high end servo is a must on the bomber. Links are another weak point that I’ve seen but I love my bomber it’s a blast to drive.

I was looking at rocking Holmes hobbies since they direct link to the battery without a BEC so thats less junk in the trunk

I have a development! I was going through my RC car box to grab some vehicles I plan on selling and I have a set of vanquish OMF beedlocks I never even built have hubs and everything. I also have a set of proline super swampers i think the large version XS? not 100% on that. the foams even though the tires were new were like rock solid from age I guess. I also have a Holmes hobbies trailmaster BLE pro. Not to mention a Tekin roc 412 waterproofed by holmes 3100kv and I'm curious if it would fit or be any good I have a Holmes pulled pro BL 540xl 3500kv as well. All unused items that were slated for a different build i never did.

Just went thru this...it's a fun project. "thumbsup"
Thread is the Ascender/scx10 to Bomber. These guys were a lot of help.

MambaX is just way cool with drag brake settings on the fly - rockracer to crawler with a radio channel.

Thanks Brown, Like 5 posts into the first page and someone said bomber has no problem with a big motor. They said they were running an eight scale motor/ESC combo. I'm just curious now how well a Holmes hobbie puller pro BL 540XL 3500kv will work in the truck. I got it originally for a yeti but I fell out of Rc before I put electronics in it bought it as a roller of RCC :D Actually going to be selling it and an Axial Exo terra so I can get a bomber kit

That's max motor I would put in one. Even then I think you'll find it's too fast - it's kind of tall for ground clearance so at high speed it gets tippy. They'll cartwheel pretty easy. LOL
On 3S power I think you'll want the bigger spur gear and then match a pinion accordingly. Like I say, I switched to 2s cuz it makes it more reasonable, but if'n I go back to 3s I would re-gear to something more moderate - then TONS of torque. There's surely no shortage of torque with the bl motors.

The kit gives you some nice upgrades, alloy body king shocks and metal links - but the ends are still plastic so as you build it throw some better stuff at it. I got lazy with the links and used the axial crap but put metal balls in them. I ended up building custom rear uppers to get a better pinion angle. They're fun to tinker with, and just complicated enough to make it fun. The biggest downfall of the design IMO is the whole cage has to come off to get to the internals - and there's no frame. So 8 screws, unhook the shocks. Seems really weird to me after building and running Axial and Ascender crawlers where you just pop the body clips and it comes off.

Anyway, it's fun and very capable, albiet a bit expensive if you get carried away. $150wheels, $100 motor, $150 esc, $100 servo...it doesn't take long, and before you know it you've dumped a grand in one. LOL

Thats the best part of going kit or full custom though brown you can drop all the $$$ very very slowly and pretend your not insane! I did it with a wraith only stock parts were part of the cage because I had a metal fastback cage from the dmg and the skid plate. 4ws supershafty trans, Vanquish links, lockouts, shafts, knuckles, and chubs and axles, mip center shafts. I built over over a couple of years bit buy bit. I guarentee i will be doing it again with a second Bomber with a custom cage but I will build my first with a kit. I already have my wheels though and motor, I will likely still pick up an ESC but that will be way in the future because on the fly drag break is yes please. Now as far as it being to fast and 3s that is actually a really good thing in my opinion because most transmitters you can adjust your throttle effectively having an electric 2 speed trans just by limiting output. This also means you can set more than 2 speeds I'm a fan of doing 3 speeds myself. have it adjust in 33% increments. The major benifit of this is if you have the extra power and aren't using it then your taxing your electrics less and thus gain more run time. (In my experience anyways.)

Other than still wanting a mamaba x though I need the kit a servo and a radio and foams to get running.
