i got my first crawler, the HPI Venture FJ, and i love it. it really brought me into this type of RC, which i hadnt tried before.

i am looking to get a second 1/10 crawler truck. However, i am looking for the scale realism, similar to the venture. I had done some looking before getting the venture and decided on it because the FJ is my favorite 1:1 trucks. I am really happy with it, but i like to drive different trucks and maybe my wife will drive with me (probably not, but its what im going with)

i wont buy a traxxas because of my own issues with them. Besides the traxxas, is there a great choice?

i dont necessarily need a RTR, i have a lot of RC experience building and have no concerns over that.

I had read the redcat gen8 is really great, and of course the scx10.2 as well. is there any others that would go well with the HPI Venture. I am going to try to cap the price at 500 or so all in. i have a remote and receiver, and i do have some nice quality servo's that i can take from my other cars. i dont have any extra esc/motors though

i will be doing a mix of driving on rocks and on grass over roots and other stuff. still trying to find a good place to go though

any help is greatly appreciated

If you don't want a TRX4, the Redcat Gen 8 Axe is pretty scale, except for the portals. Same with the MST trucks. Cross trucks are pretty scale too. Of course, you can always get the SSD Trail King, but that's just a builder's kit. It very scale, but you'd be pushing it at $500 all in. It could be done within budget with some compromises though. The Gen 8 Axe really needs nothing except maybe some new foams. Great electronics right out of the box. Gen 8 & Trail King have more aftermarket support than MST & Cross, so that's something to consider as well.

There are a ton of scale options, especially if you're interested in building a kit. Get a builder's kit, and then decide for yourself what body you want. There are a ton of options, both lexan and hard bodies.

I personally went with the Enduro builder's kit, and parked a Proline Jeep Wrangler Unlimited lexan body on top of it.

Holding a grudge against Traxxas is odd, but I know some people do it. You're hurting yourself though as you're missing out on one of the best trail trucks out there. Nobody else offers two speeds and remote, locking diffs.

Since you don't want Traxxas I'd wait until after Axialfest and see if Axial releases a new rig.

Jato summed it up nicely!

i completely understand that some people might not understand my traxxas boycott. however, its important to me, even if others dont understand it.

i am leaning towards the gen8 axe at this point. i really like the way it looks and it seems like out of the box is terrific, no major upgrades needed.

i decided on the redcat gen8 axe, however i decided against waiting for my birthday. i ordered it from amazon, it will arrive friday. unfortunately none of the hobbystores within 50 miles from my house had it

Congrats. It's a good truck. Get new foams as your first upgrade when you can.

I had read that boiling the foams make a huge difference. is that accurate

Any water intrusion into the foams will break them down, making them softer. I Imagine Boiling them would work even faster. Usually Boiling is used to unglue the tires from a glued on rim to remove the foams.

I don't know about boiling them, but water will remove the memory. It'll come back once they dry out in my experience. Since you gotta have the wheels apart to boil foams anyway, I'd just put new foams in. Even cheap foams will be better. Some guys are buying cheap dual stage foams from Club 5 Racing on ebay. I've heard they're decent.

Crawler Innovations Lil' Nova dual stage foams. 4.5", comp cut, soft in front, medium in rear

I've had both the 4.5 and the 4.25 in my stock Redcat tires, and I'd strongly recommend the 4.25 unless your rig is stupid heavy. The 4.5 just fills the tire too much and makes it stiff, plus the inner ring is large, preventing much tire squish even when you do pack it into an obstacle.

Even the 4.25" comp cuts are firmer than I'd prefer, but because the tire carcass itself is fairly rigid, it's about the best you're going to get with a 2 stage foam. To be honest, unless the rig is heavy, a single stage foam may perform better. The same tires on my Gen7 Sport with the stock non-memory foams do a better job of conforming, and still have enough rigidity to do ok sidehilling.
