I really love my Summit but the stock 3000mAh NMHi batteries just kill the fun too soon. I'm looking into getting some bigger capacity LiPos like the SPC 8200s or similar to extend the run time.

My question is can I also get a lot more run time out of a brushless motor? I don't want a crazy power motor, something that will make the truck behave like stock would be ideal for me. Truth be told I like driving it in low range most of the time anyway. Although I have an Axial Wraith, an SCX 10 and an AX 10, I sometimes like the "brute force" kind of crawling I get out of my Summit. If you're reading this section I think you likely understand what I'm talking about.

So any suggestions? I just want max run time while keeping the same performance level. If the best choice still ends up being a Tekin RX8 with a 2000Kv motor that is fine. I will just be gentle on the throttle. The goal is max run time. Maybe some other brushed motor is better? What are your experiences?

i got i combo from hobbywing xeron4274 pro whit 150a esc . can run 4s to 6s crazy power realy change the truck i use 2x2s 5000mah 40c lipo and it have lots of power and gd crawling and wen i go whit my 2x3s 3300mah 60c its just to powerfull lol my summit do insta flip on place i have strip my 2 rear dogbone on 6s but the mip dogbone are on her way :D

my lipo last 25 to 40 mins depending if i bash or crawl

if youre not looking for speed. i wouldnt suggest brushless. do you (or plan to) play in the water (mud/snow)? If youre not chasing speed, but prefer closer to stock performance with longer run times, i would suggest getting some good lipos. I've heard GREAT things about the spc 8200's. if you are thinking about upgrading the motor, id suggest looking into a dewalt 14v motor. i've never had one but everyone reports tons more torque over the stock and a slight increase in speed. other big "PROS" are it works with the stock esc as the Traxxas 775 and VERY cheap compared to brushless setups.

In terms of efficiency going brushless will without a doubt increase your run time considerably. Tekin can be waterproofed with ease as well. I will suggest the 1700kv tekin system if you go that route. With stock gearing it runs just a little faster than stock motor and will have unstoppable torque. The 8200s from spc will run long enough your next upgrade will be hiking boots.

yes it any brushless setup can be waterproofed.... but this will also void the warranty. it really depends on what your plans and intentions for the summit are...(food for thought)

Thanks guys.
I've been doing some reading and I still have a lot to learn about brushless. I was wondering why everybody runs a big torque motor (1/8 scale size) instead of a 540/550 size motor geared lower (to multiply torque)

From what I can gather...(for a big heavy truck like the Summit)
1. You run the big motor because it has a lot of torque and it spins slow. Even a 540/550 motor geared down will generate a lot of heat (even though it is not under a big load) simply because it is spinning faster.
2.The bigger motors have more cooling surface and tend to run cooler in general.
3. If both the motor and ESC stays cool, you are not wasting energy and your run time will be longer.

So ideally I should run a 1/8 size motor in the 1700-2000Kv range with stock gearing and use an ESC that can handle the amp draw that the motor is capable of even though I might never fully use all that power? Time to start saving some money. :ror:

Just get some 2S LiPo batteries for the truck. I run 5200mah hard packs from HobbyKing. That's good for 45+ minutes of run time in the snow with the stock power plant.

I think I know where you are comeing from on wanting more torque. I just recently upgraded from the stock Summit batteries to the SPC 8200mah 2s. It was amazing how much more punch the truck had. I'm pretty new to the Rc hobby and all so, I don't know if you can consider have more punch from those lipos as gaining more torque, but it definatly feels like I have more low end power for getting over obstacles. It also changed my mind about switching motors. But basically the point I'm trying to make is get yourself a nice set of lipos before you go all out and buy a different motor setup. You may be suprised. Anyhow, hope this helps with your question. :)

I just bought some turnigy nano-tech 7600 mah 2s batteries with the traxxas plugs and they take 9000+ mah from dead. I am running mine with a new mamba monster 2 system.

Just an update.

I purchased some Turnigy Nano-Tech 6000mAh LiPos and they are great. They do have more punch and they last a long time but unfortunately I don't have LVC on the ESC. My Summit is an in-between model that has the new graphics on the body but doesn't have the ESC with LVC so I need to be careful and not run them down to the end. I know I can get a cheap LVC or alarm but with the extra punch from the LiPos the truck really is awesome. I might still get a brushless setup. HobbyKing has some waterproof 1/8 setups and I was thinking either the 1900kv setup or the 2100kv setup. There is a 2300kv setup as well but I think that is getting too fast and I will either lose the crawling ability and/or start breaking parts from excess power and speed.

good luck with the new truck lipos are lifechanging, I believe i hvae the same model you have no lvd, so I bought lipos buzzer, the alarm goes of and you stop cost you 5 usd or so.

I run spc 5000 25c lipos. 19.99 when I bought them. Or close to that price. I run for 30-60 minutes depending on trigger finger. In the snow with the stock set up it just keeps going.. and going .. and going.

This is one of the very few trucks traxxas got right the frist time. I think
