battery location...which is best

I am seeing two schools of thought as far as relocation of the battery from it's stock position to one of two forward positions. I see it placed perpendicular to the frame right behind the shock posts. This sits right behind the shocks and seems nice and low but it is not as far forward as the second option. The second option is to place it above the axle and shocks like Bender does. This is much farther forward but seems to sit a bit high. Any of you who run these setups and have tried both? Which seems to work better? Opinions? Thanks to all in advance for your feedback.
 
IMO, Above the axles is too high and too much weight over the axles. I'd guess the weight distribution to be at 75/25 which sucks for going downhill and sucks for climbing because the weight is so high up. I like the perpendicular orientation behind the shock towers. It's much lower and the weight distribution is more like 65/35. Much better balanced, fewer rollovers, better sidehilling.

I've been running mine up front above the servo but plan to move it behind the shock towers as said. It climbs straight very well but very other angle it wants to rooooolllllllll.
 
The transverse mount seems to make sence, but I keep mine up over the axle for crawling. I go up and down some pretty steep rocky ridge lines where I live and I wount say I have an issue with rolling. Would it be even less the other way, I dont know. I should also add that I have widened my stance .60" from stock (.30" on each wheel). You can also add weight to the wheels.
 
I've tried both. It's actually been a great learning experience. I've wheeled it with battery in the rear, relocated up front, and homemade a mount to have the battery lay across the frame rails (Jevne Racing style). Each mod increased performance and I'd recommend the transverse mount as well for overall stability. Using the stock 1.9 tires you'll likely have no issues with turning clearance. But 2.2 may necessitate other mods, depending on your truck.
 
Even better is to mount the battery lower and between the axles. I prefer this over any other location I've used. Even used the stock battery tray to do it.

Simple process too.

Remove the two screw pins and put the tray in place.
Put a small drill bit through the screw pin holes and mark the hole location on the battery tray.
Drill two 3mm holes in the battery tray then countersink them.
Install 3mm screws.
Add Velcro.

On my JK I used two trays - one on each skid support, and run the batteries (3S 2200mAh packs) in parallel. Only thing missing in this pic is the hook side of the Velcro. I use the hook side on the rig and the loop on the battery because the hook side is easier to clean.

i put a stick pack across the frame rails right behind the shock hoops, seems it doesnt roll as much.. i took the receiver box off, velcro'd my esc and receiver to battery tray in stock location, then run my truck on lipo with it velcro'd on battery tray. thats with the stock honcho body at stock height and 2.2 tires..

im turning my scx10 into a crew cab ford so battery location will be determined soon..
 
I have also run both forward positions and although I now have it mounted behind the shock towers, it did climb better over the axle. I have since added a bit more weight to the front wheels and this has helped it to climb better, but not quite on par as before. I also have noticed that it is more balanced, but balanced does not make a better climber. You should try it both ways and see which you prefer for the terrain you run in. What works in my terrain or Joe Bobs terrain may not be the same for you. Good luck.
 
I had mine on the chassis behind the shock loops but during downward flex it interfered with my drive shaft. It now is above my servo.

Mine does this bu only if I compress the suspension with my hand. I don't show any marks on the shafts or battery holder from actual running.
 
best battery location is in the truck... lol what I do with my rigs is get smaller airplane lipos that I mounted behind my cms on the stock battery plate mounted to the cross-member with no spacers. esc and bec are mounted on a lexan mount screwed to the trans case
