Axial 1.9 Maxxis Trepador tires

Thanks for the review! I just ordered a set for my dingo and was wondering if you have heard of anyone reversing the tires like some used to do with Baja claws? I almost bought pit bulls but your review convinced me otherwise. Nice unimog by the way!

Okay.. so Axial comes out with a new tire on an old truck with a new body...

Does this mean that if they make a 2.2 tire like this they will make a "new" wraith with the new tires? Maybe change the skins and call it a new wraith? I cant wait to see what happens. Great review Chino! "thumbsup"

I just got mine mounted up today. Will be doing some testing tomorrow or so. So far im really digging the width and height though.

I dont mean to mock his credibility, but free tires = good review. actual testing on these tires shows they are horrible. I'm getting walked all over by pit bulls, tsl's and even stock ripsaws. Dont believe the hipe. axial has some explaining to do

An upgrade to tires without respect to setup will not make a person crawl better. I've been beat on plenty of courses by others with inferior tires to even those you listed. Post up some specs on your rig and maybe some can help with suggestions.

Chino runs a heavy rig. Sometimes if you put a tire on a light rig its not going to handle as well as a heavy rig. I noticed with these tires at a local crawl that they need a little weight to them and they will go awesome. Dont sell something short, traction isnt always about what tire you run. Weight, weight distribution, ect always play a part as well.

Agreed, I always try to shoot for a well balanced rig with predictable handling that does everything well and not sacrifice one area to excell in another.

Maybe the problem isn't the tires.

There's an old saying: Tis a poor swordsman who blames his sword.

8) I just bought the RTR Rubicon, and it came with the tredapor's on it. I am a little new, this is my first truck. I love the tires, they take me almost everywhere I put it!! I'm running the 1.9 ripsaw's right now. Saving the tredapor's for more extreme! Amazing review and I love the matching trucks! If I had the money I would buy the 1:1 Rubicon.

I ran my Trepadors on my G6 rig, weighing in at approx. 6 lbs. Yeah, light compared to many out there. My first impressions were to unload the tires asap. They sucked in the traction dept. Tire height was great, width is fine too, but they could be so much better. Now, granted this was out of the box, stock foams. I made a two stage foam for them and did a very similar cut to the California cut posted above. Huge improvement. My first test with them was on slick, wet rock, and some swampy mud/wet dirt....then back to the rocks. I followed my buddy's 9lb SCX10 on XL Swampys, and followed right bhind the whole time with minimal effort. I am certain in stock form the treps would have failed miserably. You can run your hand over the face of the tire and feel if it's grabbing your skin or not. The stock Treps are smooth, not grabby at all. Grab a tire you know works and do the same with your hand, there is a difference. Calling some guy you don't know a clown over a tire mod he's done is pretty weak, when you only know what he decided to write down. I cut mine right before seeing his thread, and thought he was on the right track for sure.

I'm been running the stock Treps on my JK kit for almost six monthes now with not plans to replace them.

I think the biggest reason the Treps get a bad rap is that the stock foams are an absolute joke. Even in a fairly light (bone stock) SCX they stock foams offer no lateral support and excessive sidewall bulge. I was pissed I had to de-glue my tires after a couple packs because I couldn't stand just how overly soft the stock foams were. It was impossible to hold a line when even turning on flat ground would cause so much sidewall roll the wheel would almost contact the ground!

The JK gained several ounces in homemade steel parts, and about a pound in AL wheels. I'm now running the stock two stage foams that came with my 1.9 Rockbeasts. While not perfect, they totally transformed the tire's characteristics. Much more lateral and side-hilling traction (since it's now the tread, not the sidewall that's contacting the rocks). Less hop when "getting it" to bump over ledges. And a smidgen increase in ground clearance. I'd still like a little more lateral stiffness, but it's good enough that I'm not messing with it.

I'm curious as to how many people with a negative opinion of the Trepadors have actually tried a non-stock, stiffer, foam with them?

When I first put the JK kit together I was legitimately concerned that these weren't the R35 compound that my 2.2 Ripsaws were made of. The tread seamed almost hard, certainly not "sticky" by any means. Well, I don't know if it's from the mold release compound or what, but the tires have certainly have a "break-in" period. After several runs, a lot of tire spin, and some tread scuffage they finally came into it.

Just the other day I picked the JK off of the workbench and an L-wrench was stuck to the bottom of a tire, just like a good sticky tire should.

That's good to hear they need a break in time. I have two runs on mine and while not dissapointed its good to know they will only get better. Probably should upgrade my foams like you've done.
