AX10 Deadbolt doesn't like the 20kg PowerHD servo?

I tried to use a servo I had lying around and the ESC constantly beeps, plus the servo turns weird (gets stuck a few seconds at full turn, reacts slowly or jitters.
Servo is fine on my 1/8 buggy.
Is the stock ESC a PoS? (its the one that takes max 2S) Do I need a BEC for a strong servo?

I had same issue with cc mmp wen i put it in my scx10 ii. The lights on esc would flash n wheels would go full left. I put in a bec n it works perfectly. I think u would benefit greatly from addin a bec. Plus if u ever add lights or winch, it wont over draw the esc bec. Just make sure if u get a external bec, pull the red wire out of the plug on the esc n tape it back.

Only if you want to run your receiver off the BEC. If you want to power only your servo with the BEC you need an rx bypass and leave the ESC to power the receiver

Can you link to a suitable part on Hobbyking for example? I've never use a BEC or bypass and have no idea what the specs should be

Most people use the Castle 10 amp bec, and holmes hobbies rx bypass.

That's 25€ here and a new Hobbywing crawler 80AESC which I assume doesn't need an external BEC is 34€...

5 amps isn't a huge improvement. I'd look for 8-10 amps minimum.


And even though an ESC has a built in BEC doesnt mean its up to the task. Many crawlers still demand more and will add an external BEC. I believe the only ESC with a built in BEC worth using is in the Mamba X, most others are not up to the task for crawling.

Confirmed working perfectly Arrmas BLX185 ESC - 6V 3A, 18 watts
Hobbyking BEC above - 6V 5A. 30 watts.

Reminder: it's an AX10 Deadbolt, not a steel frame hard body scaler. It weights next to nothing.

i use the exact same servo in my sons smt10, with the stock esc. never had problems, but i did add a few caps when i had the waterproof/sealed cover off. the 20kg HD servo seems to take abuse well, but i have found them to be lacking on grease inside. pulled my second one apart (brand new) after it sounded loud. all the grease inside the front case had pooled into a corner. (must have gotten hot during shiping)
Nothing wrong with a BEC, and it can be required for massive power needs, i just try to stay cheap with 1 dollar or so worth of DC caps.
 
I dont know the exact wire sizes, but many servos and ESC's are 20 or 22AWG wire (control wire). rough numbers is 10 amps MAX, current. Even at that, not sure i would want 10 amps constant being pulled through the RX style connector (3prong slide connectors).

I know many servos have high current stall ratings, but the componets inside the servo wont handle that current load very long. hence thats my reason for staying cheap and using DC caps. Its a cheap and dirty fix, and has worked well for me. If you try a CAP, just make sure its a 10volt one. many companies sell GLITCH BUSTERS rated at 20 volts, which is way too high. the cap never hits the full 5 time constants before being needed.
Never understood why they use such high rated caps, as most RX's are only rated to 9v.
I have used tons of leds in a few rc's and never had issues, even with the older style (tekin 411g2, novak rooster, furaba mc1... etc..) 5v @2amps BEC combined with modern high power servos. (really like POWER HD 25 servo)
One of my old school rc's has 18 leds on the body, plus a motor fan. that car needed 3 caps to work right, but never any more. The servo would brown-out the RX and it would just take off at full speed for a moment. lol

His was one of the best answers in this thread and he's trying to help you fix it once and for all instead of buying something that doesnt' fix the problem and then buying what would have fixed it in the first place. :)
 
Anyone who uses a stand alone BEC, ever try a generic DC - DC regulator circut? (they can buck and regulate voltage as needed)
might be quite-bit cheaper. quick ebay search of dc-dc regulators are a few bucks(up to 10 amps). these may also allow for heavy power add-on's too.

Nice blanket statement...Hobbywing crawler 80AESC --> yeah sure, not worth it, piece of crap, only 37watts to the servo lol.

But you do you, I'm sure Castle appreciates the business.

Back to the answer itself: not only expensive but also very likely overkill. Not helpful answer thus, sorry. And no justification why "5A is not enough" either. Looks like enough going by the specs.
 
You asked a question, you were given answers.

You never mentioned a budget in your first post.

You don't want suggestions that don't meet your criteria, figure it out by yourself :flipoff:
 
I use a few of those hobbyking Sbec's in various things and they work great. If you have any doubts it will work, just run it at 5v and it will pull less power, but I cannot imagine that that single servo could pull more than 5 amps even on 6 volts. I bet it maxes out under 3 amps even fully stalled....
