In the spirit of the 4th of July, our day of declaration of independance from England, I was thinking about the spirit of America. How we came to be, where we came from, and who got us here. The 4th of July is a day many consider as the "birthday" of America however July 4th, 1776 is simply the day we declared that we as Americans had had enough of England. It was decided unanimously by our colony leaders that England was unreasonable and it's power was out of control.
A few days ago our government passed a law regarding health care. Many people feel that this system takes away our freedom to choose and by requiring health care coverage restricts us as individuals. People are angry, shocked and even outraged over this matter, including myself. It is in the wake of this event that led me to go and actually read our Declaration of Independance for myself. Keep in mind that this document was written by regular people. Yes they were politicians but not the politicians of today. Many of them also had businesses of their own, families to feed, and neighbors to speak for. I am not here to start an arguement or disagree with anyone, I would simply like to bring to light our duty and rights as American citizens.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." - Everyone has these rights. Everyone.
"That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed," - The citizens of the United States created a government to protect us. WE CREATED THE GOVERNMENT. The government gets it's power from US! It is run by the people, not the president, not congress, not the senate, they are merely spokespeople for you and me.
"That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." - When the government does more harm than good WE have the right to change it! Not only change it but to change it for the better of ourselves, to be better for us, not them. How do we change it? VOTE! That is your right that was given to you by the men who died for this country long ago. It might seem overwhelming to try and change the government, even impossible but believe that it is easier now than it was in 1776. It took brave men and women to stand up for themselves and for what was right, even when it meant ridicule, prison, or even death. Stand up for yourself! The easiest way to do that is to VOTE!
"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed." - You can't rewrite the government for every little thing that is wrong. It's easy to let things get out of hand, it's easy to let them get away with a little here, a little there. It is easier to let them get away with things not in our intrest than to stand up and fight for what is right and just. But that doesn't make it right! Ever hear the saying "Anything worth having is worth fighting for"?
"And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor." - Our forefathers came together, pleged to each other to stand together and put everything on the line. They did this for the good of the people of these independant states. It takes immense bravery to sacrifice everything.
In their sacrifice came our rights. Our right to control OUR government and to hold them accountable and responsible for our safety and happiness. This July 4th, 2012 remember who is in charge, what this day represents and why it should be celebrated. Not only as a day of independance but a day when we were put in charge. We have the power to change it! I encourage everyone to register to vote and stand up for your beliefs.
