Back in 2007 I crashed my motorcycle and broke my right ankle. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83656

Then in 09 I had to have surgery on the ankle where they took 2 10mm bone plugs from my knee and grafted into my ankle.

Anyways fast forward to 2011 and I am still in constant nagging sometimes unbearable pain. I have tried several medications with no luck at all. Unfortunately the only thing that works are narcotics (percocet, Vicodin and Vicoprofen)

I am not a drug user (illegal that is) I hardly drink anymore don't smoke anything but I get looked at like a scumbag whenever I say that I need something to control my pain. I am on my feet all night long on concrete at work and by the time I get home I can barley stand. I heat my home with firewood and have a 4 month old son so i don't exactly get much time off my feet at home.

Last month my primary Dr put me on Vicoprofin it is the same as vicodin but instead of having acetaminophen in it it has IBprofin in it. Which is better for the swelling and better for your liver! That made a world of diffrence.

He put me on 1 tablet twice a day because I can't take it at work. So on my days off I'd take anywhere from 3 to 4 a day So my 30 day supply did not last 30 days! In the meantime I had an abscessed tooth and got a root canal from a specialist after the dentist tried to do it and failed! So the dentist gave me a script for 15 Vicodins.

So I called my Dr well after a month of having the vicoprofin to see if he could refill them for my ankle problems and the receptionist said she would give him the message and get back to me, well the next day came and I got no call back, so I called and asked what was up. She ended up telling me that my Dr noticed that I got Vicodin from the dentist and that he would have to review my charts. So now I have an appointment to talk to him tomorrow at 1:15pm and I have a feeling he is going to cut me off after only a month WTF I don't know if he has ever had an abscessed tooth but those bastards hurt like hell!!!

Sooo long story short I think I am going to have to look for a pain management Dr because I am just sick and tired of constantly hurting. Has anyone on here ever had any experience and know what I should expect if I see one????

Sorry for the long ass rant!!!!

Well, couple of things, you could try using ankle braces (ace wraps, ect) and shoe inserts to help the cousioning. wear more shoes or boots with higher top to tie the laces up to help support you ankle more.

alot of things could cause the pain, it could be one of those things you just have to deal with for the rest of your life. like my back im always going to have some kinda pain in it, some days are better some days are worse. since its in your ankles all your weight is on them. soo not saying you are because i dont know you, but if your heavy set and the added weight will cause your ankles to hurt. In my back it was more of the swelling that caused the pain more than my accual problem, so IBuprofins 800's 1 a day in the morning and depending on the pain 1 in the afternoon and it worked alot better than the pain killers...

I have tried several types of ankle braces and even has insoles custom made by an orthopedic Dr. Also have tried a few different medications which included 800mg IBprofins and 500mg naproxins (alieve) and a few diffrent arthritis medications. 3 months after my surgery x-rays showed my ankle was already riddled with arthritis even though they cleaned it all out during the surgery.

I have been told by surgeons that the only other option I am left with is to have my ankle fused and at 29 years old I'm not ready for that. I'm one of the few that is just looking for pain relief and not the buzz from the painkillers but all the people who just want to score drugs make it borderline impossible for people who actually need pain medication to get it:evil:

my dad has been going to pm for a few years for his back. its a long drawn out process of doing more tests and trying out all kind of diff. things. along with random drug tests to make sure your not just after drugs. it usually takes a while before they would even give you any narcotics also, and your not allowed to fill any narco scripts unless it comes from them or theyll kick you to the curb.

one more thing is just hang in there and listen to the pm dr. because thats gonna prob be your best and only option outside of more surgery.

Once a pain management MD puts you on pain meds, only take what they prescribe. They drug screen for specific drugs randomly while your under there care. They will fire you as a patient if you take anything else.

I'm not sure how bad your pain is, but i highly condemn the use of rx pain killers. Pain is an emotion, and emotions are controllable in my eyes. If you disagree and think pain is a feeling that you can't control, i would advise looking into alternative ways to help deal with and get over pain. The mind and brain are 10000000000000000000x more powerful than any chemical your putting into your body to kill pain. Also, have you looked into what is causing the pain? I realize it could be that your standing all day long, or perhaps some unknown complications with the surgery? Pain and memory are also undoubtly connected. For instance- If you wake up in the morning, and think to yourself ahhh fawk, my feet are going to hurt so bad after work today. Most likely they will hurt like hell no matter what, because your body is expecting them to hurt. I just don't want you to end up like one of the pain patients who ends up taking these for years, it's not healthy for you, or your relationships. Even taking them as perscribed. Just my .02

When I hurt my back at work the powers that be at the insurance company wanted to send me to a pain management Doc. So I went and he did a series of 3 injections. They did not work at all! I had no change in the pain. They ended up doing surgery and I still have problems to this day. I only took Vicadin for about a week after surgery but I didn't want to get addicted so I stopped. I just deal with the pain. It is hard sometimes having to chase my grandson around, and I had to change careers from being a Chef for 15 years to working on computers because of the amount of standing.

I am a maintenance tech at a label manufacturer so I walk around to each machine several times a night (3rd shift) I had a pedometer on at one point and walk around 5 miles a night sometimes. The press operators get to stand on the nice mats but not me! Plus I am up and down on ladders quite often as well.

I even spent $130 on fancy new balance shoes which do actually help a bit compared to work boots or other sneakers I had.

Thanks for all the advice so far! One day I'll have the damn thing fused and hope that cures it, I will just have a permanent thug walk lol

i cant help with the pain, but i can help distract for a second......

whats the TRAXXAS part # on them screws? :lmao: sorry. had to....

my brother has been to the Cleveland Pain Clinic to try to rid his need (not addiction) of painkillers caused by his incurable kidney disease. two times out of three and $1000 a visit, they gave him placebos just to make sure he wasnt bullshitting them. unfortunately, the only meds that seemed to work were clearly marked to NOT take them with a kidney infection or disease. it damn near killed him. i think he went on something now that makes it easier to dull the pain yet not make the body numb and unable to decipher other pains. i'll post again when i get word from him on what he went on.

WELL HELL , THERE YA GO, ITS GONNA HURT NO MATTER WHAT SO GET IT FIXED THE RIGHT WAY WHILE YOUR YOUNG"thumbsup" THE WALK WILL BE COOL TOO8)
HELL I DO'NT KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT , JUST HOPE YA FIND THE ANSWER

Hate to say it- I agree. Get it fixed- RIGHT, while you can as soon as you can. I am going to a pain clinic, plus I just had my second fusion on an ankle, but it was also operation number 8 on "Frankenfoot" as we now call it (I got small kids, we have to have some fun outa this) The pain clinic did keep me going because I put off the second fusion for awhile because of job issues. But , all it did was put off the enavatable though, but what can you do sometimes, you also have to work. Fix it, ASAP, it will just hurt, its bone & bone does that when damaged, trust me. Good luck.

What is having it fused like! Did it take the pain away? How was the surgery? And is it a harder to walk/ drive and just move around?

The first fusion didnt really take much pain away, but I was able to work a couple years before it just got worse-again. Thats why I went to a pain clinic-gotta work! My injury was kinda bad though (tore my foot off on a dirt bike accident- literally) thats why so many surgeries. Just had the second fusion on last month so still recooping. Hate to say this too, but the fusion hurts like heck for awhile to, so its a wierd balance on what ya want to do. They say it "should" work this time (less/no pain). I also had ALOT of complications this time (infection) Get a damn good Doc, ask ALOT of questions, you are paying them so dont let them rush ya. Write down a list before you go so you know what to ask (how long to recoop, how much pain to expect, any complicaions?) that kinda thing. I did this second fusion to get off all the crap, but until I recoop, still need the pain clinic. Let me know if you got any more questions.
