Finally put this Ambush I've had since they came out to good use. Its had some minor work over the years, I made a flat belly for it, weighted the snot out of the wheels, hacked stuff off to improve performance. The ol' murderdog, as we can see, wasn't particularly impressed.
I wanted to build a flat fender Willys on this platform but I couldn't come up with a body that was scaled appropriately so I went for a 1/20 scale Toyota kit. Stock wheelbase comes up just a tick short
A little slice and slide on the rails and the rear axle is back out where it needed to be
A hard body with no interior seems a bit silly so I got to hacking on that and made it fit over the transmission, console and shifters ended up mounted to the trans itself
That big long bed rear overhang is no good, so that had to go
Had headlights around already wired, made those work
Painted, detail bits stuck on and more better wheels and tires. I crammed a 3 channel receiver, Furitek lizard and about a mile of steering servo wiring under the hood. I'm proud to say I only glued that magnet onto the hood the wrong way a half dozen times.
SCX24 battery pack stuffed under the bed, SCX24 rear driveline shortened and installed
With the drivetrain complete it was time for a test run, this is not much of a rock crawler but it hit some decently difficult lines on my course. I did delete both mirrors and forcibly remove the windshield in the process though. Need to build some more appropriate obstacles.
I'm waiting on some plastic rod so I can build some sort of "tube" bumpers before I can really call it done, and I think it could use some taller tires, it drags the steering and diffs on everything.
