2013 Rules

Body dimensions in 2.2 Shafty didn't change

Gotcha. I assumed that since they were running the same dimensions as everyone else last year that they would follow suit with the new rule change.

Might want to clarify that so all the other dull Crayons in the box don't get confused as well. :ror:

Can it be done with both axles?

Its possible.

As long as it's not done in a way which would be considered progress.

EXACTLY....once progress is made it would be a penalty for not getting 4x tires between the gates.

As I read it if you did it with both axles in fwd motion then you've made progress at that point with a straddle penalty.

Almost right.....Straddle is not a penalty....not getting 4 tire between the gates is the penalty;-)

So long as 100% of the rubber from the second set of tires does not pass the fuzz on the tennis ball, correct?

Good deal. Thanks for the clarification. "thumbsup"

Progress is not made based on the position of the axles, but the position of the truck (including axles, cab, tires, etc). So it sounds like as long as you dont get ALL of your truck past the edge of the gate, then you can still correct this motion...

The rule change is crazy. I think it will work out good though.

Question on the new rule. Can you define "between" the gates if you were to straddle the gate with the front tires?

For example:

You approach a gate, straddle it, reverse to position yourself. At what point does the front tire that was NOT between the gates need to be considered "between" the gates? Front of the rubber at the beginning of the gate would be ideal IMO (opposite of what would be considered progress).

Technically, I think 4 tires "between" the gates would be considering that you could take that reverse, get the back of the tire in the middle of the gates (not entry) and call that "between".

You will have to give yourself partial credit or blame for that. In an effort to address/clarify the same question you asked that seems to pop up every year or so we just decided to eliminate the confusion.

As far as your question goes it seems you are not acknowledging or paying attention to Rule 1.10

1.10 - Progress bonus (-2 progress point): shall be awarded to drivers for each gate after it has been cleared during the attempt of a course. All gate penalties are assessed and given before a progress bonus is awarded. Progress is awarded when during the same attempt and in the intended course direction at least one front and one rear tire passes completely through the gate and all four tires are past the gate (See Illustration A). To receive the progress bonus without a gate penalty, all four tires must pass completely through the gate during the same attempt and in the intended course direction (See 1.5 for Gate penalties). Progress points are deducted from the total course score. Once a driver has pointed out, no further Progress points will be awarded.

Maybe I am not following your question, but all this situational bs is irrelevant. You either touch the gate or you don't, and you either get 4x tire between the gates before making progress or you don't.

In pictures a & b you are still in the gate and have not made progress so you can still do anything you want. Between is only relevant on the pass in which you complete progress.

NOTE: There is an illustration that goes with the rule that I can't seen to copy over.

Either way, I think the intention to simplify the rules is great. The only downside is that course designers are going to have to step up their game. I am sure this will be learned though.

1.10 - Progress bonus

Perfect. So the answer in my question is "C". "thumbsup"

get 4x tire between the gates before making progress or you don't.

IMO, the wording in your quote above causes confusion.

Its not sufficient enough to get 4 tires BETWEEN the gates without a gate penalty (which in my example A & B clearly do). The ENTIRE tire has to pass THROUGH the ENTIRE gate.

iMO "C" has not entered the gate so it's definitely between the gates yet.

I do ASSMUE that people know what PROGRESS is when I make that statement, and you what they say when you ass-u-me.

I believe he is asking about where he needs to reverse his truck to to begin moving forward again....

By rule he doesn't have to back up any where. He could pop wheelie then pivot to get both tires between the gates. It doesn't matter how he get there as long as he doesn't touch the gates. If he needs to back up a certain distance to safely maneuver around the gate thats his call not the rules.
