18650 batterys in a crawler

i picked up some sony vtc5 18650 batterys and made my self a 2s 5200 mah battery pack each cell has a 30a rating so in a 2s it should give me 60amps to play with and that seems more than enuff juice to run a 35t motor i charge the battery at 2.5 amps and its taking the charge pretty good they dont get hot charging or discharging and after several cycles its holding its mah and its lighter than the 2200mah 2s pack i was running

ive tryed this with cheap 18650s but they went bad right away i got 5 min out of it then it was toast wouldent take a charge anymore but these are holding up well so far



anyone else try these on low amp draw crawler/scalers

Nope. They would only be 30a and 3000 mAh. The 2.5a charge is close to their limit, keep monitoring temp while charging.

In series you double voltage only. In, parallel you double the milliamp hours and the amperage rating. You can run a parallel series circuit using 4 batteries if you want to double everything.

I thought about that too, just to make things easy and safe for my nephew. I was planning to put two 18650 protected cells (and a automotive fuse) under the hood. Ideally the cell holder doubles as a charger. The charching plug would be inserted into a fake fuel cap / filler neck.

im using 4 batterys so 2 parallell and 2 sieries to give me 2s and 60 amps the last outing i crawled it about 45 min and it only droped to 8 volts i know they have a different dischare curve than the lipos but that still seems pritty good
i charge an th3 li-ion setting and moniture temps while charging i charge them at 2.6 amps that might be a little high to charge but it seems to be doing good

ive seen the armma voltage it looks like a fun rig for a younger person but i thought about picking one up to build a dift rig out of but i probably wont

i wasent able to figure out a ballance port for all for cells so im just hoping i can keep up the cells but if one fails i can take that cell out and add a new one or charge that cell serately

i could never figure out what battery to run in my mini cooper there is very little space thats not interior space these fit in trunk with room to spare i even added some foam to take up the extra space so the battery isent flopping around this seems like a realy good option if the cells hold up

i think im off on the weight though it dose weigh more than my 2200 pack but the size is better and i should be getting 5200 mah these vtc5 cells are alot heavyer than the cheap chinese batterys

Because I have so many 18 650 50s for Vaping I've been playing with this idea too. 18 650 batteries are Lithium-ion batteries these have a much higher energy density than your standard LiPo battery about 70% more, but they have a lower power density meaning they cant dump out the amps as well as a lipo. It is a pretty good choice for a battery for an RC crawler but you have to remember to keep the amperage to an appropriate level. there are many 18650 batteries out there that can only handle 4 to 5 amps, but some up to 30 amps and 3000mah.

Different 18650 batteries use different cathodes which change the properties tremendously, also there are different structures involved the older of which have a higher internal resistance and a lower amp rating, often 3 amps. The 3000mah is also highly dependant on the amp draw. You can get 3000mah out with a 0.1 amp draw, but maybe only 1500 with a 10amp draw. a bunch of that energy goes into heating up the battery, and that's not good. Yea also there are a ton of fakes and over exaggerations on the ratings. Those batteries you have the sony vct's are 20-30amps, they use the newer lower resistance NMC (Lithium, manganese, nickel) guts and are what would be best for RC cars, LG HE2, and samsung 25R are also good to use. but I wouldn't buy them from amazon or ebay. if you get a good deal on them they probably aren't real. A place like batterybro.com check them for authenticity before he sells them, I buy mine from there when they go on sale. If not run in parallel, your asking for quite a lot from these batteries if your bashing. I would only recommend them for crawling, not trailing or bashing, and watch the temps, 18650's are what made vaping get all over the news when they were blowing up all over the place.

Also soldering that large wire to the end of that battery is not a safe practice, buy tabbed batteries or at the very least use the appropriate gage wire. You put a lot of heat into the end of that battery which can not only ruin the battery (damaging IR/anodes, cathodes n stuff) but also cause it to explode, or burn very quickly w/e. Obviously your ok, its undetermined but maybe your batteries are ok too. But it is important not to promote this practice, its very dangerous.

i pre tined everything so there wasent too much heat i just used a drop of solder to conect everything i make sure to get a good amount of solder to make the conecttion it made i good connection and the batterys are working good so i dont think it hurt anything

I'm not a pro or anything but it looks a bit cold to me, which is safer than to hot that's for sure, better to error on the side of caution.

I'm still waiting on super capacitors to become a thing. Capacitors can be charged in seconds, have incredible amp draw limits, pretty much never go bad. Some guys figured out how to increase the capacity about 10 years ago and said they would be available in about 5 years... guess it didn't happen. Conspiracy like the car the drives on water I guess.

the joints are a bit cold i grabed the joints with pliers and there solid but they look like poop the pack has also taken the drop test off a 10 ft rock and the pack and the rig went there seperate way at some point and they both bounced down the rocks and the pack dident come apart thats when decided i taped it up

capacitors are realy cool there selling them but there not catching on just yet in my mind to be realy usable would need a battery pack to keep the charge up then the cap take all the heavy loads then when the load eases up the caps recharge
the caps are rated in farads i dont know the convertion off the top of my head i would love to use then with my solar set up but there still exspensive compaired to good deep cycle batterys

However, I thought the real Tesla was already being powered by the 18650 cell? And the residential Tesla Power Wall Packs are just a bunch of 18650 cells inside, and this extends to the industrial sized Power Packs too. And so I thought that is why Musk was building battery manufacturing facilities. I've seen videos of entire households that are supposed to run off grid with solar panels and many many 18650 cells wired in the right serial/parallel sequence.

The Voltage series are essentially the most beginner of beginner, 1 step above toy grade cars out there. You can load them up with AA alkalines or bump to cheap 18650s so you don't have to throw out batteries all the time.

Of course you can skip all that "innovation" and remove the AA holder for a real 6 cell NIMH or 2S lipo.

Oh you can remove the 18650 holder? To me it looked built into the truck which would be asinine.

Thanks for that photo. Definitely makes a little more sense now. Still don't understand why they wouldn't just include a NiMH battery or a 2S LiPo, but maybe that's just me.
