Got this Wraith + a pile of spares in a trade, and it was a total basket case. Some of it was parts I traded in the past, the rest of is was a badly used and abused rig. Chassis was broken, trans was dry, and axles had a ton of play pretty much everywhere. Looked awesome when I got it, but as soon as I got home and tore into it, started falling apart. So anyway, started a full rebuild and things kinda went haywire along the way.
Start...
New chassis was needed, both originals were too badly cracked.
Pulled the trans and found all steel gears in nice shape. Case was warped oddly though...had a new case, and cleaned and re-lubed. Motor came off the classifieds here - no idea what it is, but it's bigger diameter than a 500 motor- maybe a 600 class? Had to do a little shaving to get it in there, but it fits. Torque monster for sure.
Fabbed up a battery tray and electronics plate and put them as low in the chassis as possible. Everything is hidden under the Spawn interior. Takes a little dexterity getting the battery in and out, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be.
Originally had Wheely King axles on here, but after breaking an RC4WD CVD after a whopping 27 minutes of trail running, I'm a little hesitant to drop $50 to get them running again...so in the meantime, I put on some R1 axles and ended up liking those a bit better. They already had some aluminum goodies on them and were just sitting on the shelf. Had to figure out the links and some sort of CMS set-up, and ended up with a slightly shorter than stock wheelbase.
I used Yeah racing shock mounts as I needed a little flexibility in where I mounted the shocks to get the ride height down. Pretty nice pieces.
Slapped together the body panels and hacked off the back of the chassis...came together pretty quick. Not a show truck by any means
Test run time...Did ok for the first time out. Gobs of center clearance and lots of torque, even on 2S. Needs some tuning, has quite a bit of bump steer and the shocks need some heavier oil. Pretty happy with it for a basket case rebuild.
Eventually I'll so some more cosmetic work... good enough to go into the woods and beat on for now.
