so i want a traditional style winch because it looks cool out on the front bumper
using a esc to control it on a seperate channel getting full 3s power
any one found one that works and lasts? just ordered another off ebay and it litterally wouldnt spool in with any weight would run in and out no problem tho the one pictured worked for awile then tried one day and just deal or i may have shorted it with my grill touching the wires

I have the cheap Warn RC4WD that looks like the one you have. I have been using it for over a year no issues. I got it used so I have no idea how old it is. I ran it off a SW3 for a while, now I run it off the 3 bros winch controller. It is direct power and smaller than an external BEC and weighs nothing. It seems to work just as good as running it off its own ESC.

yea thats the one im debating on picking up just wasnt sure i wanted to spend 70$ if it wasnt gunna last long

My experience with scale winches are they are way too underpowered to be usefull at all. I also cant stand the terrible approach angle you get with a winch bumper.

The only decent scale winch that I've tried was the old discontinued SSD ox winch, it ran 12v and had a larger motor.

Most winch motors are pathetically small.

I just put together a rig and made a suck down winch using the (above) motor/gearbox out of the RC4WD 9.5 cti, at 6v it couldnt even suck up the front axle without stalling. With 9v it does a lot better but I cant imagine it doing any heavy winching.

I was at an event and rolled my rig, decide to try to right it with my scale winch. It didn't have the power to right the rolled rig and thats when I decided I would never again use a scale winch, only servo winches going forward. For me if I need a winch it will be a servo winch 100%.

yea i get that i ran this injora on 3s and it would pull but im not sure if i bumped the control and burnt it out or what but just tried it the other day and wasnt working.

id like a servo winch i want the holms but no eta on stock for them. might just have to get a reefs. i still want the"scale" look one out front tho so id have to run it though the grill and through the scale winch tho.

this was the best one i tried just didnt last super long

You do realize that winch is made for 3s packs. There is a reason why it sucked for you, weren't running it beyond half power. It ain't great but the originals rc4wd came out with of these 12ish year ago were still enough then, just had to wire it correctly.

That said, yes they aren't near as powerful as good servo winches. But they are useable for a no heavy weight scale rig. Now the other points you mention are all very valid. Out front they get in the way unless it's a scale build designed with that understanding

I did run a few different setups and some ran 12v and they were certainly better. I've always powered these with RC4WD controllers so that could be a factor to, they're tiny and probably dont put out the power an ESC can.

With the 6v and 9v test I was just describing one of my recent uses of a winch. My silly test was basically dead lifting the axle which is not light or its intended use. For its purpose as a suck down winch I dont really need it to be powerful at all and the BEC supplying power maxes out at 9v anyway.

I direct wire. Not sure if there are any micro ESC that will handle 3s and brushed but that would be a good way to control too.

I haven't messed with a good servo winch yet, or even had a chance to really look into them to see in they need controllers. Technically if built right they shouldn't, should be built in as they are nothing more than a high torque servo without the stops.

Someone beat me to it. Yes, you can run battery voltage into the relay output winch controllers that I make.
I seem to have forgotten to put it in the web store, but I also offer a soft start option to help save your servo gears and winch line from shock loads.

If you have one that died, send me a message and we can arrange a repair.

There guys running 4s through the HEYOK Performance 4amp relay winch controller with no troubles .I always recommend 2s with my servo winches but many guys ran 4s through them . I do agree the scale warn winch looks great and lacks in performance . some guys mount the servo winch on the rock rail or side plate run the line through a rod end for guide via antenna tube to scale winch on front bumper .looks good and has power to dead lift 25 to 50 lbs "thumbsup""thumbsup"

There is always that scale warn winch I just realized they had. Something like 50lb capacity. But unless hiding it, definitely a 1/8 body sized winch.

One thing I'm seeing with these scale winches is the wire gauge. Freaking tiny. I may replace the wires on my rc4wd one, but now that I finally put it in, see how it does direct wired. Just a scale rig anyway.

I have all of the Rc4wd winches, I think...

I like them out on the front bumper myself. The Rc4wd mini just using there controller is enough to lift my SSD Trail King off the ground (Bronco)... It also looks to be the right size for this body...

I also have their 8274, and it is a true 1/8 scale, looks right on my 1/8 scale Bronco...
I plan on running a HW 1060 esc for a controller on 3s, It is rated at 100lb's dead lift.

I have the older ones too and haven't had a problem. Except the controllers, I have blown a few of them.
