I'm trying to educate myself on dig, front and/or rear dig. I'm currently building a super class clod based rig, and I have a couple of other projects starting soon too. I can't seem to find a good explanation of dig here, i have searched and searched, but the forum is flooded with posts which mention dig, but don't really explain how it works, what dig stands for etc. Can someone please enlighten me? I want to build a couple of super class rigs, possibly a Stick and a 4 link, like an NN. And I want to know if I should spend the extra $$$ for the second ESC and a four channel radio, etc for dig.

dig is when you disengage an axle so the opposite axle can "dig" in. Basically, front dig is disconnecting the rear axle (with or without brake).

That explanation is in many of the threads I've read... then again, I've only dealt with 2.2 stuff. Also, when dealing with shaft vehicles... it's kinda hard to miss the "disconnecting the driveshaft thing". I guess it could be vague when done with electronics and 2 motors.

DIG is posted in almost every catagory

If you are building a Clod read in the CLOD section, How to build a Clod , It's right there in FAQ

if your building a Shaft drivin crawler like a TLT , same deal , it's in the TLT at top cheap tricks

Thanks chevy42083, I have seen the disengaging of the 2.2 shafts, but I'm more confused as to what is done with super class rigs using two ESC's and a four channel radio.

thanks for the quick feedback guys, so I guess two ESC's are not required if motor power is simply interrupted via mechanical switch? seems like a waste using a seperate channel and seperate servo to just activate a micro switch? SPST relay boards are available which can be activated via a spare radio channel, this would eliminate the need for a servo activating a micro switch.

that youtube video is impressive, thanks rockbound! i'm looking for super class specifically at this time, 2.2 probably in the near future though.

so i'm thinking that two ESC's on a clod based super may be the way to go, then you have full independent control over front and rear axles, with a four channel radio you should be able to lock up either the front or rear wheels to dig, then turn on a dime in multiple ways.

yep pretty much!! "thumbsup" you wont technically be able to lock the wheels put hold them steady with reverse.

cool, thanks again guys! just curious, with a four channel radio how would you control both ESC's for normal driving? i've seen guys using the nomadio 4 channel, pistol grip type, and i've seen guys using a stick radio, seems like it could get complicated matching wheel speed, front and rear with two seperate ESC's, but I'm sure I'm just missing something, I'm used to the pistol grip radio from driving many RC vehicles throughout the years, so I'm actually thinking about buying the nomadio, just not sure how it works.

Matching wheel speed is done by mixing channels on transmitters like the Awesome DX6 ( No radio crystals to worrry about) Love My DX6 "thumbsup"
Nomadio has 4th ch but it's mixed not a true 4 channel, just so you know.
kamikaze has a DX6 & did a little write up on I think on how to do mixing plus he has a very capable super clod 8), he can flip a switch to to dig front or rear , crab walk.
some people use a mechanical micro switch to electronically change the power to the motors to do dig

your in the right direction doing a clod

With the sticks you can press a channel mixing button. To mix two into one for normal operation then during a dig you can flip it off and have independant control. Brushlessnut was running one in his super at devils lake.

Now with the Nomadio pistol like I was using. You can program a button to drop the throttle end point to zero basicly leaves the esc of your choice in neutral. (two channels are mixed) I have 2 buttons one to shut off the front and one to shut off the back. It is way way way easier to use, no relearning phase. If you need help with the setup let me know.

Nomadio is a real 4 channel controler:roll: the 4th channel can be mixed if you want it to be, any channel can be mixed or not with any channel
Any button can run any channel .........And it has a steering wheel"thumbsup"

Thanks Mnster and miniwheeler, I do like steering wheels, couldn't tell you the last time i drove a land vehicle with a stick radio? and really most of my RC experience has been in the 2 channel world, so this is all new to me, i do like the spektrum radios, but now that i've read a little more about the nomadio it seems pretty good too, no crystals! gotta love that, and the channel mixing seems like it would be pretty easy to get the hang of, the nomadio may be a better choice for me, i probably won't buy a radio for awhile yet, so i have time to think abou it, PS, Mnster I may take you up on that offer ;-) thanks again!

very impressive driving in those vids Kamikaze, thx. i see what you mean by having more than just dig functionality with the dual ESC's, it's gonna take me awhile to generate the funds, but I must have two ESC's, no doubt. I'm still on the fence with the radio, I use a stick radio for my plane, but I have always used a pistol style for cars and trucks, i must do more research before I make a decision.

You can not do what I was doing with a pistol radio. With the stick radio you have 4 constant variable inputs. Yeah the 4 channel nomadio will run 4 channels but not all indipendant at the same time. Look at the top 5 at the nationals this year, none of us had a steering wheel. I would recomend the dx-6, it has a lot of mixing cappability to ease you into teh use of a stick radio. I started with a 4 channel with no mixes, so thats how I learned to drive. I feel it gives me an advantage that way. Here is a quick video on how the dx-6 can be used on a super truck. http://media.putfile.com/dx6super
