So over time, I had seen people posting pictures of their SCX10.3 gladiators and whatnot on an automotive forum I frequent. I never really thought much being interested, but one day, I decided to take my kids to the local hobbytown to look around at things.

I left that day with an element enduro24 1/24 scale truck. Played with that thing all night.
This led to me telling myself I really wanted a jeep SCX24 and found one in stock an hour away. Drove the next day and picked one up. So now I have two 1/24 scale trucks, and I am hooked.
I bought those because of the low cost of entry for a RTR setup, and because I dont have a ton of funds for toys.

Id love to have a SCX10.3 gladiator (i have a 1/1 scale myself), but I cant bring myself to pay 520$ for one yet. This has led me to looking heavily into the TRX-4 sport RTR. I enjoy building and modding things, so the lure of a Kit also interests me.

My question is, are there low cost kit entries that someone on a low budget would be happy with in the 1/10th scale? Also something that they make enough parts and upgrades for as well? Any mentions that come to mind?

Right now, i like to just drive around home and places with my small 1/24, but I would like to venture out, and even one day enter events if I found myself with the option.

Budget and lots of upgrades....SCX10.2 comes to mind.
Actually almost like it better than the SCX10.3

TRX-4 sport is a nice rig and body looks much better in person IMO. This will have portal axles and the SCX10.2 will not if that's a concern. Myself I'd buy the kit version....building is half the fun.

2 both rigs are near the top for what you are looking for. Tons of aftermarket.

What do you like more about the .2 over the .3?
With the portal, do they really make that big of a difference?

The 1/24 scale trucks have been a very popular product, as they serve as a low cost way to try out the hobby.

The TRX4 Sport kit is fantastic, and I'm sure you would enjoy building it, and running it. However, I suspect after you get a taste of 1/10 scale with the TRX4, you're still going to want the Gladiator. So, if you are trying to minimize your total spending, it could potentially be cheaper to just start with the Gladiator.

You can try to save money and get a cheap Chinese knockoff version of the popular Axial SCX10ii, but you're likely to end up spending more in upgrades and replacements than if you had just got a higher quality kit to start with.

It just performs better out of the box where I live, but I have a lot of side hilling and the SCX10.3 isn't great with the heavy body and slightly higher CG. Portal does make a difference and kinda takes the challenge out of some areas I crawl. It does however really shine when it comes to deep snow.

SSD Trail King is like the ultimate SCx10.2 though and wish I picked one up instead of SCX10.2

If I was to buy my 1st kit I think i'd have to go with the SSD Trail King or TRX-4 Chassis kit and throw a 69 black blazer body on it. Under drive gearing in the rear, Hobbywing 1080 ESC and Radiolink Radio

no one ever brings up tamiya rigs there a great value not the best performing rigs outhere but lots of parts and bodys outhere for it they were the first to do scale rc rigs
i just picked up a cc01 issuzu amigo for 160 it came with a motor and esc too just ne3d a radio and a battery and tamiya kits are probably the easyest to put together making i5 a great entry leval rig with lots of room to customize
it wont keep up witb the newer rigs though i do run mine on the same trails as my other rigs and it will go there but it takes alot more.driver skill to get it there

One of the funnest rigs i bring on the trail is the Mountanier and you are right about putting them together. One of few RCs i'll buy just to build....although the dancing rider was suppose to be just a build and i run that one a lot:)

I don’t personally own one, but I’ve heard the element enduro trailwalker is hard to beat for $299

Yes, a few weeks ago I bought a Trailwalker and a Proline Galdiator body instead of getting the SCX10.3. I've been very happy with it so far.

Welcome tonthe hobby. It's so much fun. I've got the scx10.3 gladiator and love it...i just haven't had a chance to go crawl with it yet. You could look at a scx10.2 raw builders kit or a trx4 sport. Good kits for a decent price.

if I go with a builders kit, are there decent budge friendly / decent performing electronics ? I get a little lost when it comes to those and the batteries etc.

Hobby wing 1080 esc: $42
Holmes Hobbies trail master or crawl master sport: $15–$20
LiPo from Amazon (I get Zeee or Goldbat and they have been fine): $35+

I don’t go super cheap on servos but you certainly could. There are many conversations about that on here. There is a servo on Amazon for less than 20 bucks. Just go to Amazon and search high torque crawler servo when you see a bunch of options. I have two and usually put them into new projects before I bump it up to something else.

I use the FlySky GT5 controller. It was around $60 But now I think it goes for $75+. Everything‘s pretty worked up right now because of demand. Someone mentioned the Element Enduro. There is a builders kit and an rtr where you could tinker and upgrade later.

I second the trailwalker rtr. Simple easy , very reliable and part upgrades available. Out of the box you will be golden. If you like tiny 1.55 fine if not pick up a set of Amazon injora 1.9wheels and throw a set of proline km3 g8 compound class 1 4.19 size tires on and you will be smiling 👍🏻 Either way you will be smiling. Nice rig for sure. I own 2 amongst other things. One word of caution. Once you get bit it’s all over lmao. Welcome to the hobby and have a blast.

go with a kit. you may spend a bit more in the end but you'll know a lot more about your rig and you wont have to deal with junk factory electronics like replacing the steering servo after 2 weeks.

The TRX4 Sport out of the box is a very capable crawler. Consider the TRX4 sport Kit? You get to build things yourself and paint the body, so it's very hands on if that's what you like. Kit will be 280 dollars, brushed motor and ESC will be 60, 50 for a servo, and 20 for paint and maybe some other things. That adds up to 410 dollars, which really isn't bad for what you'll get. The TRX4 is a very solid rig and has a pretty good aftermarket.

The Scx 10 II is also an option, although I find the Raw Builders kit and even the RTRs a little too "light" for me. The added weight of the fenders than other things on the TRX4 make is much less bouncy and in my opinion, and drives better out of the box. (also the TRX4 has a lot less torque twist due to it having portal axles) But the SCX 10 II is still an amazing crawler, with even more aftermarket options. Stock Scx10ii is a little bit underwhelming, so you might have to spend some extra to upgrade some things.

Redcat Gen8 v2 is also a good crawler, but aftermarket is limited, and while the design is good, it's needs a bit more refining.

Do you feel that your gladiator body feels really small?
I ended up finally picking up a 10.2 builders kit today and some wheels / tires, and planning on doing a gladiator body, but the more I research and look at the proline gladiator body, it looks very small for a 1/10 scale gladiator, where the scx10.3 gladiator looks more normal

How do you feel about yours with the proline body?
