Hello everyone!!

Ok, so I am looking to get my 9yr. old a Summit for xmas. I have figured out this is what I want (w/ better batteries):

Traxxas 1/10 Summit 4WD TQi RTR
Traxxas Onyx Adapter Female Standard to Male Traxxas (x2)
Duratrax Onyx 245 AC/DC Dual Charger
Duratrax Onyx LiPo 2S 7.4V 5000mAh 25C - Traxxas Connector

The truck looks like it comes with a speed controller which has low voltage detection for Lipos built in.

Is there anything else that is a must have to run it once the batteries are charged? I will buy upgrades down the road for certain but don't want the stock batteries to die in 15 minutes only to wait 4-6 hours to charge with the kit charger.

Sorry for the noob style post, my last rig was a Tamiya Lunchbox which I still have and occasionally get out and toy with. This new technology is simply awesome.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

The Summit is great right out of the box so upgrades aren't needed just some good batteries and charger and a have a ton of fun.

Do you have these? They look like they are available for pre-order only. I also have to wonder why they are higher capacity yet cheaper than most smaller capacity batteries.

Will they fit the Summit? Does a soft case battery matter?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am curious now.

Most of the guys on the traxxas forum run these or the spc racing 8200 mah soft case lipos I run the spc racing 5600 mah in the summit. With the battery box being enclosed I don't think the soft case is a big deal or those guys wouldn't run them.

Everything has been ordered. Hopefully my son enjoys the new setup. He is currently toying with a Maisto Rock Crawler, which is kinda fun to run. :ror:

yes I have them and I tell you this because they are great. And I have many SMC lipos and some I had to wait to get but it wasn't very long. If you can get the SMC try the Revo lipos there pure race quality and the cost is great also.

It's hard to say at the moment because I'm using them on a build project and I test run it mostly. I can say that with the large 22'' wheel base and the 3.8 trenchers and large body using a 4074 2200kv Leopard motor that 30 min shouldn't be a problem. I use it pretty hard for testing and that could change when everything is dialed in. I'm at 17 pounds with the lipos installed so I'm heavy comared to a regular summit. I will run it to see what real run times are possible but for the moment it wasn't on the list to keep track of.

You might get a hour. I'm using mine in build and I've done some test runs with just one charge and some video. I just recharged for the secound time last night and will run it and see what the run time is. I do not run my Lipos down to far as it is very hard on them and it shortens the life of the lipos. I have lots of lipos and I have no need to try to damage them just to see how far I can run them. If that is what you want to know then that is a test you can do.

Get a tester like this that has a programable alarm and also tells you the amps of all the cells and combined voltage. They are very cheap to buy on ebay.

One you have used it a few runs and got a average time then you can use that avarage as a guide line to how long the run times are. This is the best test I know as to getting the most from your liops.
I hope this helps. I haven't done it with these lipos. But I plan to on the next few runs.
