Traxxas Canyon vs Proline Krawler

I've just ordered up a set of rims for my Element Enduro and need to choose some tyres.

I'm very impressed by the stock Canyons on my mate's TRX4 both in terms of grip but also their 'softness' and the resultant ride. Even with stock foams they seem a really decent compromise for trailing and occasional rock crawling. His TRX really seems to 'glide' along compared to my Sendero which skitters about and I think this is at least in part down to the fact that his tyres/foams are softer than those on my truck. FYI I'm running premounted Duratrax Showdowns.

That said Canyon's (un-mounted) are no cheaper here than a set of Prolines so maybe I should be considering those too. From what I've read, theKrawler would be a decent choice and doesn't get as easily clogged with mud as the Hyrax.

Has anyone compared the Canyons and the Krawlers side by side? As an aside, I'm guessing the Predator compound won't do much over the G8 since I'm not doing any slippery rock crawling stuff.

long ago when the TRX4 first released I went from the Canyons to the Krawlers (G8 compound) and they were definitely a grippier tyre. I'm still running the same set of Krawlers now. Its one of my favorite tyres from Proline. Personally I prefer the G8 compound, its better in my temperate climate and doesnt care if the rocks are wet or not, in fact sometimes I feel like they do a smidge better in the wet.

Hyrax vs Krawlers in the mud, the Krawlers will outperform and clean out better.

RTR tyres are typically not that great but the Canyons may be one of the best out there. If you want Canyons you might be able to find a lightly used set for less $.

The Foams will also play a big role, I prefer a dual stage foam (crawler innovations).

I have both, and prefer the Krawlers (G8) over the CTs. The CTs don’t really grip up well in my area, and a few other guys I run with have the same opinion on the CT’s. I’d get the G8 over the Predator because once the foams get broken in, I feel they are plenty soft enough-and the Predators are even softer. In my case, they’d cause too much rollover. I use just the stock foam in both tires.

I’d say without question I’d go Krawlers. They grip up better, rain or shine, and they look better IMO. The only thing I can say I have noticed is they wear a lot faster than any other tire I’ve used. I have some wear spots on the corners, but that could just be the super aggressive Lava rock.

Thanks guys. Looks like there is a lot of love for those Krawlers.

I appreciate the next question is pretty subjective but how are the stock foams?

As mentioned, I find the ones in both the Sendero stock tyres and those in the Duratrax to be a bit firm. The duratrax have really soft rubber that works great for traction but the ride is still a bit bouncy when running 'at speed'.

I'm not a huge technical rock climber so I don't think I'll likely see issues with the tyres folding over so probbaly dual stage foam is not a huge requirement for me.

Lastly, bit of a wildcard, anyone using these:

Cheers.

Because I always end up veering off and do something completely different at rthe lat minute I've ended up buying a set of Proline Grunts in G8.

I suspect the smaller OD size and stiff tread design will do exactly the opposite of what I originally intended. So, more bouncy, less plush.

It'll look way more scale though (I've always thought the Sendero's on 4.7" tyres looked a bit 'off').

Krawlers now come in Class 1 and Class 0! Still the best tire out there right now for trail rigs IMO.

Ideally we'd see JConcepts come out with a tire like the Krawler in their green compound. The green seems like a good compromise between the g8 and predator. JC needs to fill the gap in that tire line and get something with more of a solid rubber contact patch and something in class 1. Most of their tires seem to be geared towards dry rock and less for wet/slick rock and mud that we encounter in other parts of the country.

This is an old thread.

For what you're talking about JConcepts has the Hunks. They look kinda like Super Swamper TSLs. I've only noticed one local guy running them one time so I'm not sure how they really perform. They also have the Holds, which do surprisingly well on rock despite looking like a Super Swamper Bogger. They'd probably do good in mud. I kind of want to try a set.

Tusks have been my go to tire for the past couple years. They do not do very well on wet rock but do pretty good in dirt and on dry rock. I have not tried them in mud. The only truck I willingly drive through mud has Krawlers on it. They are a good tire.
