I have a question concerning all you Tamiya 3-speed owners...

I know that these kits require a 3-channel radio at least in order to have the shift function. My question is if it's possible that i can use my trigger style transmitter instead of the old joystick type. My trigger style transmitter is 3channel so is there any way i can use my channel 3 button on the transmitter to switch the gears on the tranny instead of using the joystick type?

Thanks.

Only thing will be whether your 3rd channel is 3 position or just 2 position.

Thanks for the reply. Im sorry but i don't quite follow what you mean by 3 position or two position. Im referring to an actual button labeled 'CH3' that engages the third channel on my Rx.

Think of it like this. Even though your throttle or steering is linear, you have a neutral point in the middle. Therefore 3 positions. (Example on-off-on)

Most buttons are 2 position switches. ( example on-off)

What radio are you using?

Some radios 3rd ch has only 2 selections some have more. If it only has 2 selection it wont work. It requires at least 3. I have a HL using a KoPropo radio and the 3rd ch has a button for up and down. It has a zero point of you like and 2 up and 2 down.

So you need a zero point and a selection on the 3rd ch in up and dwn so you can opperate all 3 gears.

i think they are referring to a radio like the traxxas tq radio for the summit..where it has a 3rd channel with a 3 position switch..the switch has 3 positions.

Ahh i understand now. I am using a FlySky GT3C radio at the moment.
So i am assuming my CH3 is a 2 position, on-off.

That i do not know, ive never used the flysky. im pretty sure there are dozens of guys on here that can help you with it

Yes, the flysky is a 2 position switch. You will be able to shift between 2 gears only. There is a hack kit available for that radio that will open up a lot of options should you want to go that route. (Have one, it's well worth it)
