Still worth running?

Have not ran this car in a few years. Axial Scorpion.
I didn't really mod it, just used it as it was.
Are the old style batteries still available? I'm not sure if these will take a charge.
Should I just shelve it and get a new rig?

You can get LiPos in pretty much any size and shape. Easiest way I have found is the battery dimension finder on the HobbyKing website.

before you go into just buying a lipo, youll need a lipo capable esc or one of the cheap lipo alarm/ checkers to leave plugged into the balance port. all said assuming you have a lipo capable charger.

a standard 2s size stick lipo would fit. but i recommend going with a hobbywing 1080 esc and a tattu (gens ace) 70c 1300mah 3s lipo if you want a slight upgrade. its lighter without going with such a big lipo that will run for likely 3 hours. 45 minutes is good runtime for a crawler. if you plan on being out longer, bring a second or third lipo.

Is it worth running? Maybe. Need more info on the truck and what you plan on doing with it.

NIMH batteries are still available, but they suck. Lipos are far superior. You dont need any fancy high dollar batteries for a crawler. XT60s are the most common connector now. Plenty of ESCs, batteries, and chargers will come with that connector. Depending on what ESC you have, you may need an upgrade. Old pre-lipo ESCs did not have a low voltage cutoff. If lipos get ran down too low, they will go bad. CM9000 mentioned the Hobbywing 1080. It is an excellent ESC for the money. Its probably the only one I would consider if I was using a brushed motor.

Yes it is, however your older batteries are causally more expensive than Lipo offerings now. Sooo…
New battery pack of two - 2s 5200mah $26
ESC capable with Lipo cutoff hobbywing 1060 - $22
Lipo charger $20(ish)

Under $75

I don’t see a problem rolling the scorpion at all. Anymore power and you will start breaking other things

5200mah? Way too much weight.
Lighter than the NICAD or nimh we were using at the time. Price wise, a literal few dollars more for more than double the run time. I still run the 5200’s in some TVP monster trucks, they do just fine playing around. I think the springs were a bit stiffer also which helped with the extra weight.

there still fun and sometimes can be more fun depending on the type of fun you want to have lol personally i really like having different rigs that drive differently

the only thing thats besides the electronics thats really out of date are the axles not that there bad but the newer axles are better the 10.2 axles are awsome and are pretty much a bolt on but its a rabit hole upgrade the axles then your gonna want a better chassie and better electronics better tires better wheels
you get the idea
i suggest just run it and upgrade with better or newer stuff as stuff breaks

weight is always a issue the more f it you have the more power you use and the more you have to pull up and over
when your battery is more than half the weight of the rig it makes a big difference on the performance of the rig and how long the battery lasts

some rigs are waisting power just pulling the battery around

my ax10 clone "everest 10" would run all day on a 2200mah battery

I never ran a stick pack on my AX10. Small custom packs mounted to the axle was the way to go.

At this point, the only reason I'd ever run >2200mah pack on a crawler would be if its in a vehicle that is a pain in the ass to swap out the battery (like my JLU bodied VS410 Pro) or a timed endurance type event.

It's a nearly stock Scorpion. I've had it since about 2010.
Also have a 2WD Slash that I used to run quite a bit. Have just been stupid busy between work and other hobbies and they have sat on the shelf.
Been messing with these old batteries for a few days now and I don't think any of them will take a charge anymore.

Looking at the prices of batteries and chargers they have dropped A LOT in price over the years.
I also have a very early Death Metal Garage chassis that I'm toying with building.
The body is a little beat on the Scorpion now.

Most of the modern axles are far superior to the AX10 axles in every way. Smaller pumpkins, better plastics, WAY better steering, more gear reduction. Parts availability for the old trucks is not what it used to be. With that said, you can still have plenty of fun with it.

The Scorpion lives. I may need a new controller.
This one seems to have something loose inside. When it works it's fine, then it quits working.
Power light goes off and all.

Hmm
Not quite as it is for a different receiver with the scx24 series.

This might be some help reading through here.
