Well my old weller soldering iron packed it in and when I went to use my backup so did it. Thinking its time to upgrade to a digital station. I have an old analog style one but it's for my 1:1 shop I need something for my basement. I'm into robotics and electronics in general so I do a lot of soldering. What would you guys recommend ?

Weller WESD51 Digital Soldering Station:Amazon:Electronics

My local electronics shop only carries Weller stuff. I was thinking this just for ease of getting new tips and I don't have to order it online. Is the hacko brand really worth the extra trouble ?

I have a weller soldering gun and never had an issue with it....Didn't have as much luck with the 1 weller station I had that only lasted a year or so...maybe it was bad luck, but my Hakko stations last much longer. the one I am currently using is around 3 years old now with no issues. previous one was over 7 years old before it went on the fritz....for whatever thats worth...

Not to sound like a broken record but Hakko, I've had a 936 for years and love it. The 936 has been phased out but if you can find one used grab it.

Had my hako go out after many years of use, so in a pinch I scooped up this unit from the local RadioShack:
Digital Soldering Station : Soldering tools & supplies | RadioShack.com

I paid $79.99 at the time, about 9 months ago but it looks like the price has dropped "thumbsup"

I do alot of tech work and soldering jobs at the our shop, at least 2-3 hours of consistent soldering everyday and it has yet to slow me down "thumbsup"

It has presets and heats up in a flash, plus if it ever crapped out at least you have a local store that will take it back hopefully replace it.

I use a BK3000lf station, it was ~$65 and has a ~10 second "from off to soldering" time.
My son also uses one.

Here it is with an external fan to remove fumes... SPECIAL DEAL!! BK3000LF Solder Station & BK486 Fan
It comes with a pointy tip, I also bought a small (~1/8") chisel tip for most of my soldering.
Basic station.... other tips on right side... BlackJack SolderWerks BK3000LF 70 Watt Solder Station

Note: part of why I bought it was to deal with the newer lead free solder used on ESC's & external BEC's. Lead free solder has a much higher melting point that my "basic soldering iron" had issues with.

I like my trackpower"thumbsup"

Isn't that a Hakko 936 "clone" ?

Yes, it's been said... I'm Hakko through and through.. kinda like a ford vs chevy guy...

Started with a radio-shack wand... then got a 936 and thought I just instantly gained skills in the art of soldering..
Sold the 936 and bought the FX-88 model when it came out a few years ago..
I doubt I'll need a new one anytime soon but that FX-888D does look nice!

I also seen these, FRYS.com | American Hakko which have been getting very good reviews.. gonna have to pick one up and toss it in the field box.
