Should I go wide or narrow?

I got bit by the crawler bug and decided to toss one together to get serious with. The plan is for a Stick with Clods and a host of other goodies but I am undecided on the width of the wheels. I know I am going to run the Proline 40 series wheels with Moab tires. What are the pros and cons to the wide Commando wheels vs. the narrow Cheyenne wheels?

There really isn't much difference in the width of the 2 wheels, I'd suggest narrowing them both down to about 2 to 2 1/4" wide.

I figured with a little less then 3/4" difference it would make a big difference in these. I will most likely go with stock narrow ones to start then. I'm used to 1to1 scale so I have tons to learn on RC crawling.

I am running the Proline Beadlocks on my rig. After running it a little I took the knife to them and narrowed them...what a big difference. It makes the Moab XL's perform ten times better. Teamsvsc has meetings weekly for members to work on their rigs. You need to hook up with them and they can help with your first rig. They are great guys...and girls.

You might want to save some money & get some Axial BLs from RCPcrawlers. I think they're much narrower than PLs

That would be my thinking also !!! More grip and less slip .

Depending on the terrain, it gives you more psi. When on the rocks, some of the time only a section of your tire is actually in contact, so the more psi you can put on the contact patch, the more traction you get. I personally like a wider tire than others, I don't have any specific reason why, just because. Another reason is, narrowed rims make the tire a little taller.

look at most real rock crawlers they run a tall skinny tire and narrowing a wheel is a good idea if you dont know or want to do it few guys on here will for you for the right price

A wide tire will only give you more contact patch. With a narrower tire the contact patch is smaller. Now put them on the same vehicle. The narrower tire will have more surface pressure due to the smaller contact patch. More pressure=more grip. Conversly, a wider tire will have less surface pressure because of it's larger contact patch.

Yeah I just got a set of prolines with moabs and am going to try them for a while then probably narrow them and switch to xl's. Just like my 1:1 I switched from a 17x10 to a 17x8 and they worked a whole lot better for my 36x13.5's.

I'll save you some trouble and tell you to use the XTM thorns narrowed for the moabs. Much better preformance IMO. And a lot cheaper.
