Shock Choices

I am looking at finally upgrading from the stock shocks. They still seem to leak and get a film of oil over time even after a proper rebuild.

My rig is 9.6-9.8 lbs just fyi (will add scalerfab steel rock sliders to that weight in time...). I have a HH Crawlmaster Expert 13t in it and it has a top speed of maybe 12.5 mph lol

It's a trail and casual crawling rig for going for hikes with friends etc. Not a hardcore comp rig.

I am not willing to shell out 100$ on proline so don't mention them. I am shooting for a budget of about 60$.

The guy at my local hobby shop bashes, racea, and crawls. He says Traxxas shocks are the only shocks that never leak. I find this hard to believe.

He suggested traxxaa big bores. He said the GTR's are more damping than I need and look way out of scale (I agree).

I have also seen mention of some sort of Losi shocks in my price range, but I am not sure what ones they are.

Lastly, I have heard high praise for Gmade shocks, but also have seen a lot of people say they suck and leak a lot.

So, when properly built with slime, do any of these shocks leak?

Can anyone suggest one over the other, or the pro's and con's between my options?

I am open to other suggestions (besides rc4wd as I hear they look scale but suck).

Edit: updated rig weight.

I know you said you're not going to shell out the money but Proline is all I run in my bombers. The big bores are nice and will save some money but I hate not having a threaded body for preload. I also have Gmades on a few but they leak more then I would like. I build all my shocks with green slime. I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as a shock that does not leak. They all will leak a little.

Or you can find some TLR shocks. They are excellent and can be found relatively cheap on eBay.

Traxxas big bores can be found for $20 to $30 in the classifieds. Great shock and I can remember having any of mine leak. No need for green slime, just build as directed. Use them on my Bomber and they work just fine. Just tune them to the weight of your rig.

I'm a big fan of the Gmades Piggyback XDs, mainly b/c of the low cost, ease of putting together, and infinite adjustability.

I put 4 of them on my truck and 2 no leaky, but the other 2 are leaking .

Because of the leak, I recently ordered some green slime and also some Traxxas blue X-rings #2362 and will see if this will fix the leaky ones.

I don't have any experience with Prolines or Big bores to compare to though, just the stock which are not very good and leak way worse!

Ok, I got home from work and got a proper weigh in on my rig with battery. 9.6 to 9.8 lbs (I used my bathrook scale that has .2 lb increments and subtracted my weight from my weight with crawler. It seemed close to going to 9.8)

Unless the losi shocks can handle that weight + even more when I eventually get some scalerfab steel rock sliders on this beast then I might go for big bores. I could never get spending 100$ on 4 shocks past the wife lol so no proline.

The Big Bores come in 3 lengths, so that is important to know what you want. Traxxas springs are sketchy at best, I've run Losi springs in all my Traxxas shocks, both on my crawler and my basher.
The GTR shocks are the same as bigbores, but threaded for preload, BB use stupid collars

The only problem I've found with the Gmade XD shocks (can't be bother with the piggy backs) is the lack of soft spring options,
have thus far found only AE have a set soft enough

The Traxxas 2662 XX-L 103mm shocks I've got have all been leak free so far & have the bonus that the Axial springs fit & there's a good range of weights of them.
What they lack is cap pivot ball which is where the GTR shocks are an advantage but again they take the bigger diam spring like the Gmade's.
The Proline Powerstroke mount kit has pivot balls that I'm lead to believe fit

Well damn, the GTR shocks with titanium shafts are only $25 a pair? I would go with those, in fact, I'm going to order some just because.

The TLR shocks would be the rear shocks from a twenty two. No problem with that weight, just use the right spring. The scaler fab sliders barely weigh anything.

I have a question about rear dual shock option.I don't want to open a new thread so I ask here.I have rr10 kit so I have the aluminum king shocks front and rear.I also have traxxas big bore shocks #4962.Are they good in length for second shock in the rear position of trail arm or it will need the rod end mod to extend them?

Those big bores are actually 3-4 mm shorter than the stock bomber shocks. For rear shocks you need 110mm, or maybe even 120mm long shocks along with the shorter stock shocks. Others might know more.

I want to use what I already have.I measured my big bore shocks and they are 100mm tall eye to eye.So I will need to do the shock cup mod with traxxas rod end. With Traxxas 5525 rod end I can reach ~121mm eye to eye.I can do this with the short traxxas 5347 but they will be ~112mm tall eye to eye.Any difference between them, which length work better?
