Servo Winch Issue

So guys, I fitted a servo winch about six months ago which has worked great until this week. Problem has been when turning the rig on, the damn winch turns on and can't be controlled with the GT5 controller which I've been using ch.4 all this time with no issues. Re-binding fixes it initially but what would cause it to happen again 2-3 days later? Would really like to keep a working winch on this rig. The esc is a HW 1080 G2 if that's any help.

ive had alot of problems with alot of radios and winches i install a on off switch for the winch dosent fix it but gives you a chance to turn it off and adjust the trim before it breaks something

if using a esc for a winch controler you can try adjusting the dead band on the throtle settings for the esc

Much thanks @ferp420, good to know it seems to be a common enough problem and guess I'll be looking at some kinda switch to kill the power if need be ... again, much thanks (y)

On my Gt3c there’s two sets of buttons connected to the winch channel. The correct one is momentary. The incorrect one is on/off and if i accidentally hit it. The winch turns on. Don’t know how to correct it due to not being familiar with all the codes on it. Maybe yours is doing the same? Good luck!!!

On the GT5 I use ch.4 which I believe is a 3-position switch that allows off, forward and reverse for the winch ... works great when not deciding to glitch out. Drives me nuts not being able to find the exact cause and fix it properly. Re-binding seems to be the only way to fix it as of now.

I may look at a remote key fob and see about powering the winch direct from a battery so the receiver is omitted ... if that's possible?

That sure sounds like one of the winch controllers I make:

And the other issue: When first powering everything up, the winch is turned on. My RC winch controllers won't move immediately after power up. The need to see the neutral position first, then they will allow movement.
or

Let me know if I can be of some help!

What servo winch are you using?

Injora 35kg winch servo. Have tested the servo outside the rig and performs as it should, seems to be the receiver/transmitter that's glitching out to me.
Really hoping to keep using the transmitter for controlling it, rather than a remote which I'll probably end up losing lol

K, quick update --- ran another battery through the rig today with no probs regarding the winch so I'm completely clueless as to what's going on from time to time ... gremlins

Could the 3 position switch in the transmitter be dirty or worn? I've seen a number of switches that use a little strip of copper or metal that breaks free and moves after some use. Could be something like that in the controller switch that after jiggling just right is close enough that once there is current it doesn't open far enough to stop the flow of electrons so it just keeps going until you shut it down and rebind.

I'm with you on hoping the transmitter itself can be fixed to make the winch work, but in the chance you need a separate remote for it I can suggest taping, strapping or otherwise attaching it to your transmitter to prevent loss.

I am not sure how many years simple crap like this didn't get implemented in my world of (lost) stuff.

I hadn't even thought about that and would make sense so I guess I'll be looking at that next. I kinda hope not though as the transmitter 'aint even a year old yet but still a possibility so cheers (y)

This is why I stopped using winches. They always seem to be a problematic PITA and I'm that spaz with little to no patience at times. 🤣

I have a GT5 but since it is bound to my son's truck with throttle and steering only, I have very little time messing around on it. Is there any way it is set up with a mix or something where your winch channel is attached to another channel? Is Channel 4 also assigned to another switch?

I only run them on trucks that need them for some sort of competition use. I'm not scale nerd enough to use them in trail runs or anything.

I'm using all channels on the GT5 and the only thing I can seem to adjust is the speed of the winch. I don't actually use it much to be honest but since it's fitted ... must have it working as should be lol

I've been following this with interest and I'm just going to throw this out there. May or may not be a solution. With everything you've done so far to try and solve this issue, I'm thinking you may be right that it is a transmitter/receiver issue. It wasn't a GT5 but I had a GT3C a few years ago and one truck seemed to always have minor issues. Other trucks used the same transmitter with no issues. After pulling my hair out for a while, I changed the receiver and all the problems went away. So, have you tried a different receiver? Could be worth it to eliminate the receiver as the source of the issues.

(y) just happened to order another receiver this morning just in-case ... process of elimination has started but would be so much easier if it was a consistent problem rather than every now & then out the blue ... hasn't been happening last few days either.

Okay guys, quick update to something I'm finding so far. Not a fix but seems to be a work-around for this little quirk. I fitted a small extension a few days back from Ch.4 in the receiver box so I can physically pull the plug from the winch. Since doing this, there has been no problems with the winch system. I can now power the rig up as normal and then connect the winch plug into the extension from the receiver box. This makes me think that it's more of a power-on surge issue rather than a software glitch or a bad switch on the transmitter. Will be keeping an eye on this and doing further tests but for now, seems to behave now and I can relax a bit lol

Do you have the bec on the esc set too high for the winch servo? I thought the HW 1080 g2 had above 7.4v bec settings that maybe the winch doesn't like.

But also seems like it could just be a bad channel in the receiver. I had one where I saw the magic smoke escape and all but one channel worked after that.
