Scale Build-off proposal; "The Great Race of 2050"

So this is an idea for a scale build I've been wanting to do myself for quite a while, but I think the idea would be much better if multiple people built their own interpretation of the project theme. So, this is my proposal for a scale build-off theme. Read through it, then post up if you'd be interested in competing.

The Setting;

The year is 2050. Globalization, industrial expansion and population explosion have caused the majority of Earth's surface to be covered in Mega Cities. Very few natural landscapes remain, and those that do are harsh, extreme environments. Motorsports have condensed to a select few series, that are run sparsely and generally only once per year. Off-road motorsports have particularly suffered, with multiple series combining to reduce environmental impact and due to lack of available useable land. The premier off-road racing series, an annual multi-stage endurance race, has developed into an all-encompassing event, spectated by millions across the globe and entered by only the most dedicated teams. The vehicles are multi-million dollar technological wonders, designed and built to conquer vast expanses of bone-dry desert, near impossible rocky mountain passes, frozen tundras and everything in between. The drivers are the only remaining of the best of the bravest, considered as gods of vehicular competition, able to compete under any conditions - and every last bit of their experience and expertise will be pushed to the limit to complete this ultimate test of human and technological endurance. Technical specifications for the entrant vehicles are almost non-existent, creating a field of some of the most diverse machines ever assembled within one racing series. At its core The Great Race is a time trial event - the team with the shortest overall time (calculated by compiling the times of each individual stage) is the winner.

The Challenge;

Each entrant in the build-off is required to design and construct a scale representation of the vehicle that they believe will be able to conquer the challenge presented by The Great Race. The resulting vehicle should meet the following criteria;

- The vehicle must be a scale representation of a futuristic race vehicle. You are encouraged to think outside of the box, but you are still limited by the laws of physics.

- Vehicles must be ground-based and wheel driven - no hovercrafts, airplanes, helicopters, rocket-powered cars, etc.

- Your vehicle should be designed as an all-purpose race vehicle. It would be required to successfully navigate courses consisting of desert racing stages, rocky trails, icy tundras, etc. - if it's an unpaved environment, your vehicle must be able to drive over it, and do so as quickly as possible. It is a race after all!

- The vehicles are not allowed to be modified IN ANY WAY between stages - meaning you can't have a truck with independent suspension for one stage and solid axles for the next. The vehicles mechanical design may not be altered after initial technical inspection. So design your vehicle with every stage in mind.

- Vehicles may be built to any scale, but the largest wheel size allowable would be standard 2.2" wheels - no short course split diameter wheels either.

Now, for the logistics of the actual competition. I envision that a group of judges will be appointed to score each entrant's final vehicle. The entries will be judged and assigned points based on several criteria; originality of design, scale appearance, quality of fabrication, and assumed performance capabilities of the finished vehicle given the hypothetical parameters of the proposed race. The time frame for the build-off should be set to last for at least a couple months, to give people plenty of time to complete their build. Building must start and finish within the timeframe of the build-off - you can't use a project that you'd already started as the base for your build-off entrant.

So that's my proposal for a build-off. It's a bit different from other build-off themes, but the point of the build-off would be to get people thinking outside the box and inspire creativity among the entrants. A lot of people have begun building rigs in the vein of Ultra4, TTC, etc. competitions, which are more or less multi-purpose rigs to begin with. This build-off just takes that philosophy to the extreme - building one vehicle that is capable of conquering any environment set before it, with a futuristic twist.

So who all would be interested in this competition? Any thoughts, suggestions, comments?

Discuss.

While I doubt I could build along those lines that would look good I would love to see what some of the styrene bad ass's on this forum could do..."thumbsup"

That would be awesome! I have thought about a build like this for sometime.

And the prize is.

Expanded enginuity and creativity of the builder, a resulting vehicle unlike anything else anyone else has ever built, pride in your ability to think outside the norm...

It'd be for having fun. Not everything has to result in a trophy.

it sounds like a cross breeding of death race & cannon ball run.

Actually when thinking about the concept of the race, I was thinking along the lines of what Ultra4 might evolve into given a few decades of technological advancement and innovation. People are already building some amazing rigs with the ability to do just about anything off road - I want to see what people think a rig would look like if it were designed to actually do anything, with a futuristic twist.

I'd be down just because it sounds like a fun idea, and a good use of parts I have but don't have much of a use for. Only problem is I'm horrible at having time for thigs like this so a gracious deadline would be nice.

That's why I'm thinking it would be best to have the timeframe span at least a month or two, to give people plenty of time to start and finish their projects.

It wouldn't have to have a full body, it could very well be a futuristic tube buggy. Whatever the entrant wants to build, making it as outlandish as possible (but still physically possible as it is meant to be a scale representation of an actual future vehicle) would be encouraged.
