Just got in a Wrangler rtr (ebay second hand basically new minus esc and tx under 350 shipped can't pass that up). The wrangler was pretty much mint looks like it may have been run a couple minutes max. No scratches or anything. Even got an extra micro servo for the 2 speed included.
Based on several members talking about the dreaded clicking noise I decided to do a tear down and re-grease first thing. First off I tossed in a ae5 esc only to find that servo worked but forward and reverse didn't. Guess my spare was bad......... I did plug up motor wires from my scx10 ii jeep esc and the motor does work. I didn't feel like tearing it apart to use the esc (ordered a Hobbywing 1080). So I have no idea if mine was actually clicking or not. What I did discover was when turning the wheels by hand about every half wheel rotation I could feel a grinding and binding almost as if the spur gear had a bad spot. Being severely hearing impaired makes trouble shooting a problem sometimes. So I work by feel and vibrations mostly.
Well I disassembled the front and rear axles cleaned and inspected. What I found was that the pinion gear was sliding forward and impacting the shoulder of the ring gear. There were visible grind marks on the shoulder of the ring gear. Pretty sure there is no way to shim this. I should have taken pictures of this......... I reassembled the axle with a good coating of marine grease and that seems to have fixed it for now. I feel that this is a temporary fix though. I have considered taking it back a part and grinding down the end of the pinion gear slightly to smooth the edge of the teeth off but I don't want to damage anything. This was both axles too mostly the front one was the worst the rear had very faint marks and little to no play in the gears. Plus side my portal gears had the pins installed correctly.
Has anyone else had any issues with this or was this just a quality control issue? Any suggestions as to what might be a good fix if the grease doesn't fix it?
