Required Tools?

Capra is on my list of rock crawlers, wanted to know what tools are needed to build it from the kit. Besides no mention of a soldering iron (which I think is needed for the electronics), noticed a discrepancy between the text & tool images in the downloadable version of the manual:

  1. Text mentions a 0.05" allen wrench, but there's no picture of one
  2. Image of a 4mm allen wrench, but no mention in the list above
  3. I am ASSUMING the pictured tools are allen wrenches ... but could be other types of drivers? (e.g. nut, torx)
  4. Any other required tools that the manual doesn't mention?

I recently finished the majority of the build, just waiting on electronics, tires, and other goodies to arrive. I would definitely recommend a pair of shock shaft/ball end pliers. Picked these up from amazon, and they made all those ball ends and shocks much easier. A rod end tool would also be quite helpful. I was able to get away with my traxxas plastic multi-tool, but this TGH rod end speed wrench would've made life easier. I don't have any recommendations, but a tool for those pesky e-clips would've helped a lot too. Those were probably the most fiddly/frustrating part for me. Other then that, some nice hex drivers is all you need. Have fun with the build!

Thanks Burger_Enthusiast,

That's 2 tools that I didn't know about. What about Axial's list of hex drivers (0.05", 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm) ... is the list complete?

User bill_delong in another forum & question, suggested recommended a cordless screwdriver, and think that's prudent as well.

Good luck w. your electronics.

The only hex drivers I can remember using so far are 1.5mm and 2mm. If you don't already own a nice set of hex drivers, that should be pretty high on the priority list.

I personally don't like using power screwdrivers or drills on a fresh kit. The speed and power can damage plastic quite easily, so you need to be careful. Although I did bust out the drill once I made it to the cage build. Keep the speed slow, and turn the clutch down as low as it goes.

Thanks again. Saw that same advice on one of the cordless screwdriver reviews.

Everything you need (and nothing you don't) in one convenient package...

If you look hard, you can probably still find a set somewhere online. I had one in my amazon cart, but someone grabbed the last one in the last couple days.

Thanks. Looks like it will be late July before it's back in stock.

Definitely doesn't match Axial's documentation ... think after all of the bad reviews about bad assembly instructions, they would have made is crystal clear.

You need the 0.05" hex driver for the bleed set screws on the shock caps.

Thanks Kingmeow. BTW, you have lots of great rock crawling locations, up your way. Jenny Jump, High Point, Norvin Green, DE Water Gap, Pyramid Mountain, etc., etc.

I used a 1.5mm hex driver for the bleed screws

Oops! Sorry for the misinformation Angstroms. Burger is correct. It's 1.5mm for the bleed screws. The 0.05" is of the set screw used to secure the pinion to your motor shaft. Man, senility has already set in???!!! ;-) I went down to the basement and actually tried it just to make sure.

I know a 0.05" is needed as I had to go out and buy one from the LHS so I know I used one in the build!

Yes, we do have a few places up by where I am to go crawling. Garret Mountain in Woodland Park (West Paterson) often have meets there.

Thanks for the clarification about the 0.05" hex driver, Kingmeow.

Garrett Mountain? Haven't been there in decades. Tough to comprehend that open space like that still exists in that part of NJ.
