Question about Hobbywing 1080 ESC

Hi,
I have a Traxxas TRX-4 and am looking to upgrade it with a hobbywing 1080 esc to replace the stock XL-5 HV. I also have the Traxxas light kit for the bronco installed and am wondering if I can use that with the hobbywing esc, or do I have to use something like a deans/xt60 connector to jst adapter to power it?

Please help!

Here is how I did it. Patched in to the power lines on the esc for direct power to the light controller. The controller regulates the amount of power which protects the led’s. Works great and the new esc is awesome

I used a servo lead, removed the white wire, cut off the jst connector and soldered the red n black up to the light module. Then plugged it into the tuning port on the 1080. Sorry not the best picture

The Traxxas 8028 lighting power supply is powered by actual battery voltage when using the XL5 ESC. By plugging into the HW1080 programming port you are doing two things, 1. you are only supplying 6v to the 8028 and 2. you are putting unnecessary additional load on the ESC. Does it work, Yes. Is it wired correctly, No.

If that’s the case, then what does the red wire that runs to the receiver do?
Sorry, but I’d much rather have it set up like I do then tap into my battery plug wires. Pretty much everything runs 6v, and when I switch to a savox 1210sg I will be running the esc at 7.4v
The LED’s are plenty bright. I do not feel it is “wired incorrectly”
The module regulates it down to 3v anyway, so why does it battery that I’m not running “battery voltage”

The Traxxas rx & micro servos are only rated for 6v

The Traxxas 8028 power supply is powered with the JST plug on the black wires which plugs into the XL5 ESC via the included JST plug which is simply a tap off the actual battery voltage. The second red wire from the 8028 is plugged into an open channel on the stock receiver and functions as an on/off switch for whatever reason Traxxas felt it was needed. That is how Traxxas says to wire it.
