Pros & Cons: trans swap to axial 3 gear with dig

I read about swapping out the redcat trans for an scx10.2 3 gear trans bc it will accept the vanquish dig box. other than that what is the point?

there comes a point when you look at how much it's going to cost to swap out certain parts and you might have been better off just getting a builders kit or RTR like the capra.

Thoughts?

what redcat are you starting with
the redcat 3 gear and the axial 3 gear are almost identicle the company that makes redcat parts copyed axial
they sell cheap 3gears with dig but there the axial bolt pattern not that its hard to fix and you would be better off with a axial.skid depending on what redcat your starting with

the problem with rtrs is they all need upgrades and builders kits dont come with any parts i would use so thats more for upgrades
there isent really a cheap way to build a custom rig so just role with it

I hear ya. I'm not looking for cheap, bc i understand you get what you pay for.
I have an everest gen7 w/ a hot racing skid that has two different trans mounting points.
so if the axial 3 gear is basically the same, then i might be able to fit the dig unit that is compatible to axial.

The cost is only high if you're looking at "name brand" stuff. I have five rigs running this gearbox, and have experienced zero problems. So that would give you a dig trans for about 65 bucks.

You will need to completely disassemble it and oil/grease everything. There's no lubricant in there beyond what was left over from machining. The included screws are also so-so, but on par with Redcat, so probably not an issue.
Oh, it also comes with a steel spur, which some folks are fine with, but I hate them. An 81/84/87 tooth from Kimbrough or similar will bolt right on.

they are basicly the same the axial is cheaper to buy fully upgraded

if you dont already have metal gears and or the aluminum case for your redcat your better off going with the axial

for the price of metal gears for the redcat you can get a axial 3 gear with metal gears and aluminum case already for a few dollors more you can get it with dig already built in

This is cracking me up.
I actually have this in my amazon cart right now.
I was leary about it, but i think you helped me make up my mind on it.
What servo do you like to run on the dig?
I was thinking a 20kg cheapy.
I appreciate the quick feedback.

For the servo, I'm exclusively the JX4409-- highly recommended, unless you plan on taking it underwater. 9kg is more than enough torque for dig activation, and the 4409 is small, quiet, not power-hungry-- and 15 bucks. I have so many of them in service it should be illegal, and never had one go out on me. And even if one should let out the magical smoke... hey, 15 bucks.

I appreciate it. I like how low profile it is.
