I did a fun little project today. I wanted a vertical band saw but, I didn't want to spend vertical band saw money so, I started looking at portable band saws.. The Milwaukee models I was looking at were $200-$300 and that's was a bit steep considering it wasn't really what I was after so, I picked up a Harbor Freight portable band saw and fabricated a stand for it. I've used a portable for quite some time and it's a very useful tool but, this variation is going to be a completely different animal. It'll be nice to bring the workpiece to the cutter rather than having to fixture the part and then make a cut. Both have their place I suppose. I used mostly materials I had laying around.. Made some cuts, drilled & threaded some holes, I little welding and there it is. With the 20% off coupon, I have about $75 into this including the foot pedal and I think it'll be a really handy tool for the shop. I'm happy with how it turned out although I did kind of rush through it and hack it a little bit.. If it was a new Milwaukee portable band saw, I would have made it nicer. It'll be on the bench with a foot pedal.. click on, click off.

I'm renovating the GripFab Shop.. New work benches, Bought a Miller Sync210, grinders & vises oh my! This is just the beginning, I plan to get my hands dirty this year."thumbsup"

Fun, easy & inexpensive project and a great tool for anyones workspace!

If you have money to spend on a really nice setup, check out the new Milwaukee portable band saws and the SwagOffroad stand.. Nice stuff.

Thanks for looking!

The swag off road setup is slick, used my buddies a lot with my 1:1 build. I am too looking at one for myself

$65 bandsaw from harbor freight (after coupon), $9 18tpi blade from home depot
$35 in metal
4 hours of build time.
And my ghetto version. Top plate has counter sunk screws, saw cover can be taken off after plate comes off and 3 screws drilled in tapped into saw chassis that mount it to frame. Frame is screw into benchtop.

Cut some 16ga plate and some 3/16 like butter. Going to up my fab game with this setup.
Just need to make some guides of some sort.

Thanks for the idea Die-Laughing!

My little 110v welder struggled with that 3/16 flat bar.

For the lazy with a fat wallet, Swag Offroad

They do have one low budget one that clamps in a vice. They make nice stuff.

For the price yours is hard to beat :)

Great idea ! I've done many projects over the years without a band saw but now I think I'll have to visit harbor freight soon and build a stand because i absolutely need one now.:)

Those who have this, how does it do on tighter radius cuts with the wider blade? The blade looks wider than the traditional upright band saw blade.

On my cheapo Harbor Freight saw, the blade is quite wobbly. It gets me close. haha.
The blade is a standard 44" bandsaw blade, so around 3/8" or 1/2" wide.
