Mytrick RC lighting control on fire

Hi!
I have a Traxxas TRX-4 defender with the Traxxas bec and ran a mytrick dragon lighting package for this rig (light bar, headlights, tail lights etc.). The rig have been running fine for the 5 times I ran it the past month until today the wires caught on fire and I luckily was able to turn the esc off and pull the battery out. However all the electrons doesn’t work anymore. I tried turning on with the esc and radio Without the bec and there is no response. I followed instructions And it worked fine previously. Does this ever happened to anyone and knows what went wrong? Thanks so much for any help.

Welcome to the site!

Which wires caught on fire - those for the LED lights or something else?

Best guess, something was drawling too much current, the wires heated up and melted. Before things went completely nuclear, the wires shorted out, killing other electronics on your rig. Nope, this is not common...

What, exactly, caught fire?

Thanks for having me on your site.
The mytrick rc wire from the BEC to the lighting control caught on fire. I was also running a brushed Holmes torque master 550 21T motor. (I was trying to send pics off my phone. I haven’t figured it out yet). Thanks

There's your problem!

Kidding. That sucks, man.
Looking at the site, should the unit have been powered directly from the battery?

Thanks for your thoughts. i think i will buy an adapter from mytricksrc to run from the traxxas battery along with the new lighting control. That's how they get you I guess... I just wanted to avoid this issue from happening again. thanks for the help!

The mytrickRC power wires from the Traxxas BEC to the Light Controller.

Here are the pictures of the wire from the MytrickRC that caught on fire.
Thanks for all your help to trying to figure this out.

The MyTrick controller is what started to melt, correct? If so, I'd reach out to them. Looks like you got a faulty controller that could have caused your problem.

No Jato it’s the wires. Looks to be the “low power” side. The manual is quite specific about where what goes. I would also reach out as SOP.
The “power adapter” for XT60 is same as I wire my bec into my esc lead wires, I made mine.

Thanks for your input. Nice rig by the way.. yeah I wired it just like yours but i think the issue maybe from where I am drawing the power from (Traxxas Bec) since that’s where the wire burned.. is it normal to have all the electronics get fried as well? My Traxxas receiver no longer responds and the same for my esc. I reached out to mytrickrc and they said that the other electronics shouldn’t have been knocked out . But it is definitely a strange situation that I wouldn’t want anyone to repeat.

With mine it was during set up. The balance leads for power sparked, heated, and the tiny pins unsoldered and stuck to my 3’s balance plug. Was it my fault? I don’t know? I’m glad the pack didn’t puff. I now use the deans power adapter to power the lights up instead of through my balance lead. I still will use the My trick lighting.

I would say the problem was within the my trickrc controller as jato suggested, for the main power leads to have burned like that they would pretty much have to direct short under the epoxy. I have had my light wires short out and the unit just kicked off, instead of drawing enough power to burn the main power leads. If the unit is within warranty my trick rc should replace it without argument. If they give you crap about it let us know about their customer service.

I have 2 of these units and have never had an issue with them other then not being able to mix certain led colors.

Thanks for your thoughts. I’m sent Mytrick RC a response email with pictures and my receipt. But no response yet. Will keep you all posted. Thanks!

The Traxxas 8028 BEC is rated at 3v .5a output and is only designed to power the Traxxas light kit. Since you tried to power the DG-1 from the 8028 you clearly did not follow the installation instructions properly. The installation instructions specifically say the DG-1 power input is 7.4v-12v which in fact means actual battery voltage. Take that 8028 BEC off and throw it in the trash it is virtually useless and is just a waste of space. Also, in the instruction manual it specifically states "MyTrickRC is not responsible for damage resulting from incorrect connection". It is clear to me this is not a MyTrickRC failure, this is a mis-wired installation.
