My Rock Rey

Hey everyone,

I have had the Rock Rey for a few weeks now I've got to say this is a really impressive truck. Power is plentiful and I am impressed with how rugged the bulk of the truck is. Few things though I wanted to change (as we all do), and need some help.

I locked the center and recently the front. Originally I started with the super soft silicone ear plugs in the front diff, felt great but got chewed up after a few battery packs. So I went fully locked upfront and about 10 minutes into my run twisted the front plastic drive sliders. I have a feeling I didn't do a good job with the silcone ear plugs so might give that another go.

Does anyone know of a stronger set of front axles? I'm of the thinking that it's not a bad thing to have a cheap plastic weak point in case something has to give, but I am curious if a better set of front axles exist? Saw the HotRacing ones but didn't read any reviews.

Also, has anyone figured out a good way to take some of the slop out of the steering? I hear the stock servo horn is junk I haven't broken mine yet, while I'm in there I wouldn't mind making the whole steering system better. Ideas?

Attached a few pictures. Mod list is very short right now. Just locked diffs, HR rear driveshaft (time will tell on this one), a 10t pinion, and body panels I got on Ebay. I imagine the maker of them is on here, really nice work. I plan to go with a sensored system and a lower kv motor. I really don't need the speed this thing is capable of on 3s, 2s definitely works better for my purposes.

Hi iridebikes247,

The best semi-softlocker Iv found is the diff putty made by racers edge or you can use blue tak as it’s basically the same stuff but blue instead of the white racers edge stuff ,
This stuff slips when the drive shafts get wedged and I havent broken any stock ones as yet , I have broken 3 HR front drive shafts though so I’d stay clear of those ,
the rear ssd drive shaft is the best other than a mip setup but as I understand they don’t have a specific one available and is a hodgepodge of different pieces but are highly thought of ,
But off the shelf the ssd is probably the strongest
I would advise the traxxas screw mod in readiness for locked diffs otherwise the stock screws will snap aswell

Thanks a lot for the help. I actually just returned the SSD rear driveshaft. Thing looked bulletproof, attached a picture showing the pin that came with the axle on the left, and required stock Losi pin installed on the other driveshaft. Considered pulling the diffs and heading over to the drill press but got lazy, now I wish I gave it a try lol.

I will be giving the diff putty a try for sure. After locking the front/center diffs all I could think about were the tiny diff cup screws :lmao:

I think I'll give the Exotek diff cups a try along with the third member with bigger bearings.

No worries buddy we’re all here to help each other ,
Another diff fluid to try if you can get it is “bad horsie “ I’ve tried but the bloke doesn’t like shipping 1-3 tubs to the uk (too much hassle not enough profit ) but it’s meant to be the best stuff if you can get it ! I couldn’t so made do with racers edge
I really can’t express enough of my hatred for those horrible ring and pinion gear destroying excuses for diff screws ,...the other component to switch for bullet proof diffs are the washers , it’s necessary if your using the locker but when using putty it will most definitely deform under the hydraulic pressure from the putty , use the X-ray washers I’m pretty sure the part no. Is in the list of upgrades here in the rock Rey section
In regards to the drive shaft I didn’t do any modding to the pin and it lasted well over a year of hard bashing and rock bouncing lol

Well last night took the RR out for a quick bash and got the gift of having a FWD only truck after a few minutes. With the center locked I guess it increased the strain enough to shear all 4 of the screws that mate the ring/cup. Oh well lol. W

I'm thinking the Exotek cups with the Vanquish rear axle for the Rock Rey. Perhaps someone has an opinion on this axle? Torn between going with a full cnc axle and aluminum third member only, ideas?

Thanks guys.
