My Brushless Combo

I've been reading a little to paste together what I need for a brushless setup. I'm swapping my Rx to use my DX6i which almost means esc too so, why not brushless? Considering all the dimensions; length, dia., shaft dia. and rpm, battery etc. I came up with something. Feeling pretty confident, I ordered a motor and esc from Hobby King. I shouldn't have confidence though, all the parameters associated with any one motor is beyond me, entirely. I'm just curious, for those familiar with the McRC, am I in the ballpark with what I have coming?

The motor has a longish shaft. I assume I can just shorten as needed.

funny thing, i was looking at that exact same combo on HK's site the other day, while researching if i want to get one of these or not.

HK is easily the best place to go for brushless systems as long as you are willing to figure out the combo on your own, and don't mind having a big brand name on your system.

also, with that set-up, you could easily go to a bigger battery, too! just think of the runtime your could get with a 1000-1300mah pack!

I never tried thier ESC but the 3850 motor i did. I used a Sidewinder micro ESC. I never could get the thing to work right. It always cogged a little...especially at the slow speed when under load. I think the 4500 is going to be a little fast and will cogg worse.

Mounting the motors is not a direct bolt in but not too difficult. I have heard of great sucess with the outrunner motors in the 2000-2500. They give great control and power but have no speed.

Just some info...I hope you find it somewhat helpful"thumbsup"

Keep us posted on how it fits/works. I just smoked (literaly) the stock esc after 5 minutes on the new 2s lipo. Not sure I want to go back with Losi electronics after that.

There must have been something else wrong besides just your lipo to cause that problem, 1000's of people run lipos w/ no probs and losi suggests them. If it was and esc problem its 1/100,000 there pretty good all in all, decase it and have a look.

heres the best brushless micro setup IMO! and as far as all other motors theyve been tested on the Micro T Forum extensivly and this is the best out there.

2000kv brushless outrunner, $10 super light and small( not a fan of the long can for crawling) but its not a bolt on its somewhat complicated making a motor mount and taping the holes lining everything right.

I have that same motor and a micro sidewinder ESC, though haven't run it.
I was going to get this turnigy micro ESC,but they were out of stock for a long while at the time. it seems to work well for another who runs the same micro out runner (de cased)
but i got a sweet deal on the sidewinder and could pass it up lol

BTW EGGOZ CRAWLERZ any info on that brass pinion? where did you get it? Ive been looking but cant find exactly what i need, or if i do you have to buy a large amount

Its from hobby king. as far as i know its the only micro out runner I've seen used on the micro losi
from what ive read on the micro T forums in the crawler section you have to take the motor apart and push the shaft out the other side and make a new motor mount
his post should still be near the top of the Micro crawler section on Micro T forums, same guy that did the 4ws and other mods

I picked up 2 because they were so cheap and i didn't get charged more shipping

hextronik 5 gram brushless outrunner hobby king has them but that takes 2 weeks or more, my esc took 2 months. but there are some companys that stock them in the us and ship faster.

brass pinions: ebay seller benmlee has them under losi micro rally brass pinion, plastic ones melted on the rally!

also i saw the 5 gram outrunner on ebay in the usa too. i found mine for like $10 in USA.

also alot of companys stock the same esc's as hobbyking for a little more money and doesnt take so long, but ive also got stuff quik from hobbykinng so its hit n miss if it gets caught at customs!

in my experience the slow shipping is usually when you choose the cheapest shipping option. the cheapest takes 2 weeks to south Florida if everything is in stock. the next fastest shipping option ( about the price of UPS in most cases ) seems to take me 4-5 days tops.

I normally take the 5 day option and leave the slow way for doo-dads and spares

thanks for the heads up on the pinion, Ive melted my McSCT pinion as well. I was going to get delrin but id rather have full range of brass for the crawler and McSCT
is that a 10 tooth?

Here is my build thread using the aforementioned HobbyKing goodies...

The long can BL motors have excellent torque but do have a tendency to cog a bit at low RPM, setting the advance to 0 degrees helps a lot, as well as the smallest pinion you can find (10T i believe is the smallest)...

The outrunner is by far the best - crazy torque and runs forever (super-efficient)... also has super-low speed control too... Search "CreepyG" and check out the vids i posted...

Thanks. The sidewinder esc probably has more capability to deal with cogging too. Oh well, we'll see. I'll report back when I'm done. Really, I'm just hoping to make an improvement over repeatedly having to vibrate the throttle lever in order to creep.

You r correct on the sidewinder...amazing tunability. To me it's the best because it can be programmed to do brushed motors too. I was able to set the throttle curves to a point that helped more than anything else. If you run the 2000 outrunner you will love the control and perfect low end power. You will however miss the punch. It has little to no wheel speed. I wish I could find one in the 3000 range. 2000 is too slow...3850 coggs...maybe 3000 would be good?
