motor gets too hot to touch and stalls

i am running the stock spur (87 i think) and now a 12 tooth pinion. since i put it on it will run longer. but still gets hot after about 20-25 minutes. i need to find someone here in denver that can cut the comm for me. but soon as the holidays pass i w ill probably just get a new hand wound motor.
maybe if i have time i will pull the axles and tranny apart to check bearings and re grease everything. i havent greased it since it was new in july. well the rear diff got greased when i put the underdrive gears in.
i can live with the run times i am getting for the time bbeing. i would just like to be able to go a full lipo pack befor i have to stop and watch my buddies crawl while my motor cools down

so i was at rch crawling today and was having motor issues again with it overheating too hot to touch. i ended up buying a new 45t integy motor thinking that my motor had been damaged. and just my luck the brand new motor got super hot. while i was swapping motors i made sure everything was spinning free.
i am just having bad luck. i seem to be the only one having this problem. i really think tehe issue is my 3s lipos now.

should i just buy a heat sink with a built in fan and be done with it? is anyone else running one?

yes. with the motor out, you can hold it in the air and turn the tires and everything spins freely. if you spin them fast they keep spinning.

i know itegys are not the best motors but it seems most people are not having issues.

btw i am running a 12 tooth pinion, stock spur, undredrive rear, fxr, and 3s lipo.
i will go lower on the pinion but even with the 12t i am not really caring for the slow speed on lipo

i also bout a hotwire for my tekin today. maybe fine tuning something will help.
im at a loss

If everything spins free with the motor out, then there's no issue there. I've run underdrive gears in the rear and stock gears in the front for months now and can run multiple packs without the motor overheating.

You have a bad armature in that motor. One of the winds is shorted. That one pole on the arm is acting like a 5 turn (just an example, might be worse), while the others are OK, and that shorted wind is causing huge amp draw, which causes overheating. I've seen this recently with a buddies motor, and I've seen this on rare occasions over the last 20 years of playing with toy cars.

Try a different motor that is known to work. I'd bet everything is fine.

i just put a new motor in on thursday. still gets hot. i picked up a heatsink with a fan at the lhs today. i need to take it back tomorow and get the one that the fan mounts on top of the heatsink. i know its just a bandaid. i also bought a new soldering iron so i can re-do all my solder joints.

Gear mesh at the pinion and spur.

You said with the motor out it spins fine.

New motor gets hot.

Gear mesh.

One other thing, I know you say it spins free without the motor, but I've had the big bearing in the knuckles go bad fairly quickly. Might check those to see if they really do spin freely. Lots of weight in the wheels will mask binding or bad bearings somewhere.

i have checked and re set the gear mesh about ten times since this all started.

as for the knuckle bearings. i blew one out last weekend and replaced them with new. the bearing came apart. was pretty cool. i shoulda takin pics. it went out shortly after my left lower knuckle screw came loose and fell off. shoulda takin pics.

i took it out today to a local crawl spaot and didnt have any overheating issues. of corse it was only 35 degrees.

i finnaly was able to update my FXR with the new update. should help a little.

my motor doesnt seem to be getting too hott anymore. it gets warm but not like it was.

i also took apart my tranny and did and re greased everything.

i just started having the same problem with the same setup. 3s lipo, fxr and 4 smoked motors in 3 days time. i dont mean hot, i mean smoking. i ran the stock axial 55 turn for 6 months on 3s with no problems then switched to a v11 for 3 months with no problems. then i added dig and robinson racing tranny gears and started smoking motors, no binding any where, gear mesh is fine and 3 of the motors are known to be good and the 4th was brand new...?

i put a heat sink with a built in fan on my motor. it seemed to cool the motor pretty good. i only run th fan when i am indoors. might run it outside when the temps heat up but for now it works great.
