Mamba X cooling fan

Castle pros, do you know if the cooling fan goes off after a certain temp has been reached or should it be on all the time? The guide doesn't go into any detail on the ESC cooling fan operation.

Right now upon startup it spins for a sec then stops. I ran a full pack thru it and it never went on. The ESC never got more than warm to the touch so I know temps on it were fine.

Thanks for the help :flipoff:

Mine has yet to ever come on in my little scx2 in the 6 months I've had it. This is running a 4s battery several times too. I think for it to come on, it probably has to be a decently heavy vehicle running 4 or 6s and constant on/off throttle situations like racing. I'm probably just going to take it off because of this and its not waterproof anyway.

The Fan has a little brushed motor, so water is not really an issue. Just a little WD40 if it get's wet.
The fan in the Monster X is regulated by esc temp as far as i know. It always start spinning at startup so u know it's working.

The fan on the Mamba X and Monster X switched on and off. I think it comes on if the ESC internal temperature reached 65C.

Actually, more voltage can lower ESC heat. When running higher voltage you tend to gear down or run a lower KV motor and that can help lower the amps running through the ESC.

Sweet! Thanks for the input folks. Special thanks to the Castle Bro Robert!

Sometimes this cotdamn forum is alright...

I ran my heavy Wraith yesterday about one hour on my 4S LiHV Battery ( Ambient temp 34c ) My Monster Mamba Extreme only activated once around 1 minute only. That is while I climb up a very steep hill

Just remembered something about the cooling fan. The reason it kicks on at startup for a second is to test the fan and make sure it is still working. If you ever think your ESC is hot and the fan is not spinning, toggle the power switch and make sure it spins up. If it spins and then shuts down, then you are good to go and it isn't that hot.

The thermal shutdown is set slightly above 100c.(I think 105 or 110, can't remember off the top of my head) 100c is the boiling point of water. I've gotten an ESC right up to that before and as I splashed the car through a puddle I could hear the water boiling off the heatsink.

I got out of that bind I was in and parked it in the shade with the fan still running. The fan turned off 2 or 3 minutes later. With the internal bec set at 8v pushing the HV servo constantly, it probably doesn't help with temps. Glad to know its working. Thanks @robert@castle for the info.

Sorry to bump a few week old thread, but I just learned some new information about the fan. It turns on if the ESC gets to 65c and will turn off if the ESC gets back below 55c.

Thanks for the informative update Robert.

The fan has kicked in once or twice since that day. The last time it came on, I came off the rocks and onto the trail. Ripped it wide open and hooned it around some corners with the trail I was on's real loose dirt. It turned off after only a couple minutes of doing those shenanigans.

The first time (in the start of this thread and in my crappy quality video, ((I have since upgraded to Iphone7 with super cool slo-mo and Ultra 4k definition)) I had just pulled it under a tree and let it cool down without running it. I think with my Bec set at the max the Mamba X produces, it doesnt help with heat either. Hooking up on Castle link after the run that day, the highest temp I got was 151.1 degrees fahrenheit. It didnt get any higher than that and the line was linear at that temp as if it wasn"t going to get any hotter, seeming as if the fan running while still crawling was keeping it safe. The automatic fan comes on right at the perfect temp, good job Castle! Furthermore, it dropped right down after I pulled it under some shade beside a tree. I beleive I could have still kept crawling and been fine. I'm tempted to put my 4s in the truck here on another 93 degree plus day and see if it comes on. I doubt it will because of the popular saying of "Volt up, Gear down" is intended for users to adhere to it for safe cooling purposes. May drop down to an 11t pinion from the 13t and try the same set up on 3s too again and see how well that helps.
