I am looking to buy a GMade R1 and I need Rock Crawling Setup Advice. I do not need it to go fast. I am looking for advice on the following:

  • Servo
  • Radio
  • Receiver
  • Speed Control
  • Motor
  • Battery
What do you guys suggest? Thanks in advance!

For Radio, I highly recommend the Hacked FlySky GT3B from Overkill RC. It is an 8 channel radio for $50-ish. You really can't beat that. As for speed controller and motor, I'm running a Castle Creations Sidewinder SV3 with an Integy 55T brushed motor. The Sidewinder SV3 is nice and being able to hook it up to my laptop and program it is really convenient. I also recommend that you buy and install a Castle Creations BEC. If you need help with the wiring, shoot me a PM. As far as batteries go, I have a CKRC PunchPack 3S Lipo battery that I have put about 7 cycles on and it has performed really well so far. The cells discharge evenly and I am getting about 30 to 45 minutes of drive-time with each charge.

With mods and patience, the R1 is a great little crawler. I am really happy with mine. If you can buy only one upgrade, go with the RCscrewz kit. Beyond that, the Delrin skid plate, clearance links, and HB Rover tires will greatly enhance the performance of your rig.

Pretty new to RC (Been interested in the hobby for a long time, but first rig)

Here's what I went with:

Servo: Savox 1283SG
Radio: Spektrum DX3C
Reciever: Spektrum SR300
ESC: Tekin Fx-R
Motor: Tekin 45T Pro
Battery: Went with a cheap Turnigy Nano-Tech 1300 mAh 25-40C. Its small, but fits in the R1 chassis nicely.
BEC: Castle BEC. Pretty much the standard I think.

Might be helpful to ya! Good luck on the build!

When I ordered my R1 kit, I regretted it almost immediately. After reading about its shortcomings and watching tons of youtube videos of crappily assembled R1s, I concluded that the rig was crap. And, truthfully, the stock R1 is a nearly worthless crawler. But with the right modifications and upgrades, the R1 is capable of some astonishing crawling. My rig blew my mind today. I watched in awe this afternoon as it clawed its way up lines that would pose formidable challenges to even an MOA rig. I am so glad that I went with the R1.

I'm digging my R1 so far. It crawls well and is a blast. Sucks outta the box but with the battery relocated, bent links, derlin skid, and weighted DH wheels and new tires, it's crawling well.

As with most rigs it's all about dialing it in.

I've still gotta add the rear steer, but so far it out crawls my wraith by a long shot.

My thoughts on the R1, set it up right and it will do lines that Only comp crawlers can do..

I love the R1 for many reasons, the main one being that when I have taken it out people Just love it!! Its a bad ass looking rig period

I love the style of the r1. Once I put decent tires, weights and moved the battery, it was a completely different rig. I love this crawler.
