I think my rear diff is dead

I've got an extra set of the tiny gears but I've got to go get an HD gearset tomorrow. I have 100K Diff oil should I use any other kind of grease when I put it together? Anybody have any suggestions of what else I should do while I'm in there?

Well it could just be the grease, but it looks like that ring gear is toast. If thats the original diff, there should be a locker in there- not spider gears. Most will replace the stock rear locker with a spool. Depending on the way you use the truck, an open diff in the rear isnt unheard of. Butthat 100k is probably gonna be too light for anything besides grippy hardpack or pavement. 500k seems to be the go-to starting point. Many people run 1 mil and even silly putty or silicone earplugs. 500k in the front and a spool out back works for me.

As for other things to look for, wiggle the end of the driveshaft at the diff. If theres excessive play there, consider replacing those pinion bearings or your new gears wont be worth a fart. Wipe out that old grease in the housing as well; Might find a few chunks of old gear. Over all, it actually looks pretty clean in there...

It's hard to tell from the pic but there are metal shavings in the grease on the diff cover. This is an RTR Yeti and this is the first time I've opened the differential. Do you have a link to a spool people use? I wouldn't mind having it not locked so I can turn a little better.

I found the same thing when I opened my diff cover for the first time. Gear teeth were all rounded over and the grease was full of metal shavings. It seems axial made the ring/pinion gears out of wet paper.

I just cleaned out all the old grease, repacked it, and I'm going to run it til it grenades.

I run open rear diff and is hard to keep the oil inside the diff, even 1mil. But if is a RTR and it's the first time you open it, there is a locker there and not spider gears.

I got it all pulled apart and it looks like the ball bearing at the driveshaft end of the pinion failed. Is there a sealed bearing that I can replace it with?
