Our Frequently Asked Questions About Kustom Kolor Paints

Here are some of our frequently asked questions about Kustom Color paints:

  • Why do we strongly recommend basecoats? Several reasons, here are just a few: 1.) It gives your model an even color to start, allowing for the best and brightest looking colors. 2.) Due to the semi-translucent nature of the paint base, coatings allow for fewer coats to get coverage. 3.) Some custom paints are designed to enhance the colors that are painted with them. Kandy colors enhance the base that they are painted over; Kameleon or color shift pigments are enhanced by being painted over darker colors.
  • What is the reduction for airbrushing? This is a matter of personal preference, but a good benchmark is to start at 20% reducer. We have found that some colors need more or less reduction.
  • What kind of paint is Kustom Kolor? It is a type of enamel paint.
  • Is Kustom Kolor paint House of Kolor paint in a smaller container? NO, House of Kolor uses a different technology in the binder/carrier, most of which would require activators to make them work properly. However, most of the pigments are the same pigments that you would find in the House of Kolor paint line, and Kustom Kolor is made by the same company, in the same facility, that makes House of Kolor.
  • Why not just use House of Kolor Paint? The House of Kolor paint system was designed for professional painters; the paint requires very specific conditions, equipment and mixing to make it work properly. It was designed to be sprayed as a complete system in a spray booth. House of Kolor is not designed to be used on the type of plastics that models are made from.

i used it on my nats jeep, and will never use it again. VERY transperant, i had to use 2 spray cans just to spray the hood and doors of my jeep tuber. it also did this weird thing were it shrunk and the paint pulled itself away from the lexan leaving an air void. metal flake also laid uneven.
ive been preping and painting lexan bodies for 15 years now, never had that happen with pactra paint.
