Hobbywing ESCs: WP1040 vs WP1060

First, I know the go-to response for many will be to get a programmable WP1080 instead; for this thread, let's just assume the 1080 does not exist...

I'm looking for experiences with Hobbywing WP1040 vs WP1060 ESCs; I have a 1040 in my Carisma "Sca1e" crawler, and it's just too "punchy" (poor throttle modulation) from neutral for good crawling... I don't need it to be perfect, just a little more manageable... is the 1060 any better in this respect? Those that use them seem to like them a lot, I just don't know what criteria it's based on...

I don't like the 1060, prefer the 1040.
It seems like the drag brake isn't as good on the 1060.

My answer doesn’t exist then, let’s say.
The reason the cheap 1080 is a favorite is due to its programability, the freewheel function is why.

I haven't seen the 1040 on the Hobbywing website for quite a while now. Seems it is only available as re-branded for the manufacturers like Redcat. I found the lipo cutoff voltage too low on the 1040 and I ran a low voltage alarm plugged in to the battery balance plug. I don't like to let my lipos get below 3.3V/cell and the 1040 wasn't cutting out at that voltage. I've since replaced the 1040.
 
I don't like the 1060, prefer the 1040.

By not "as good", do you mean it is harsher, or not enough? I'm finding some people like a lot of drag, and some not as much... Most of my use is very low speed (crawl), so I'm not sure it would matter as much to me...

Yea, I've read lots about the 1080 and it's advantages, and for someone who's more into crawling than I am (it's a tertiary hobby for me) it might be worthwhile, but I don't really see myself needing programability; I have a couple of other more expensive hobbies that I'd rather save my money for. Plus, I'm building my wife a truck for Christmas that, if I'm realistic, will mostly sit on the shelf (but she wants one anyway), so I have to put something in hers, may as well be my 1040.

Hobbywing doesn't offer it anymore, from what I've gathered. My 1040 came in my RTR Carisma Sca1e Lynx.
 
Cut off 2 motor leads for the hw880 and you save $8 over the 1080 if you already have a program card.

I haven't tested this myself, but I'm pretty sure it will work.

there both equaly bad in my opinion ive only had.1 1060 last its in a e10 ive burned up 7 or 8 of them and a few 1040s last 1 in the gen8 and one in my maxstone 16 i only burned up 3 of these i just fried 2 1060s in a row in a month replaced them with a new rain 480 for $12 and can now run up to 4s with out issues i have 1rig 20lbs 2 27t motors on 4s with one of the newrain 80 amp 480 esc its been going strong for 2 years and runs underwater on the beach and in creaks and through the desert heat on 100+days still going strong at half the price i have 2 on a clod buster going on 4 years now on 3s out of 10 of these only one has flamed on and one was doa the rest are kicking but year after year but your not getting any more setings than the 1060 so most people wont touch them
 
Thanks for the comments, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a 1060. I need something cheap to put in my wife's SCXII clone build, so I'll pass my 1040 on to her and use the 1060 for now. If I ever decide to upgrade to the 1080, the 1060 will go to hers and then we'll have a 1040 for a spare.

I actuallythought pretty hard about that... not because I'd save much, but for some reason I just like using things for unintended purposes...
 
Finally got around to installing the 1060; for anyone else wondering, yes, the 1060 makes a big difference in throttle modulation over the stock 1040, plus it's much smaller and I should also be able to upgrade to a 20kg servo now. $20 well spent!

What is the freewheel function anyways? I t does not seem to change anything on my Ascender.
 
Thanks guys. I read that post, but it seemed like there was not a lot of agreement on what it is. Holmes said it would create more heat and reduce efficiency, while hobby wing and others seemed to thing the opposite. Still not sure.
 
It Basicaly makes it so you can go downhill slower, smoother and more controlled.

You will not notice a difference going uphill or on flat ground.

Think of driving a stick shift downhill. Freewheeling is the break.
