I was out of the hobby for 18 years and got back in two years ago with an Axial SCX-10. I have started building a low-budget secondary crawler. My goal is to build a decent mud/snow truck using the HG P402 kit and my old RC vehicles for parts. I really wanted to use body that was on my Tamiya Blackfoot when I got it since that was my first hobby grade RC. There still aren’t a lot of builds based on the HG P402 so hopefully this helps some other out as well.

The kit less electronics and the body was $90 from banggood.com. The plan is to have a functional crawler for under $120.00 and a decent crawler for under $200.00.

The front three link rubbed the driveshaft and other folks on the interwebs said the steering works awful so I built a three link with a panhard bar. The lower links are DIY links using Traxxis 5347 rod ends, aluminum tubing, and threaded rod. The upper link is a shortened tie-rod. I am not sure what it came off of. The track bar and drag link are built using misc. pieces I had sitting around. I used HPI RST4 MT oil-filled shocks with HG P402 Springs. The servo is currently a 20 year old unused Futaba S3003 servo, 44.00 OZ-IN, 3.17KG servo. It is very under powered.

The rear suspensions is now a four link. DIY links using Traxxis 5347 rod ends, aluminum tubing, and threaded rod. I used a few old plastic pieces to make a truss for the upper links. Stock HG P402 Non-Filled Shocks

Motor –Vintage Reedy Firehawk 27T Brushed Motor and 26 tooth pinion gear
HPI RS4 MT Slipper clutch and 96 tooth spur gear
Stock HG P402 driveshafts and axles
Slipper clutch spring cut from a longer spring from ACE Hardware(the HPI spring diameter was too small)

This is a 1988 or 1989 Chevy C/K pickup truck body. This was given to me by my uncle when he left the hobby. It was on a Tamiya Blackfoot that he gave to me. It has a 10.5" wheelbase so there was another reason for the custom suspension links.

Wheels – HPI 2.2” Super Star Wheels
Tires – Proline Mashers

These tires are glued to the wheels and I really don't think they can ever be separated. I am not crazy about the wheels but I really wanted to run these tires. I also have a set of stock Tamiya Lunchbox tires that may be used in the snow.

I haven't decided on a permanent location for the received or speed control yet. I'll post photos when I do.

Speed Control – Hobbywing 1060, older version with 5A BEC(I will be adding a BEC when the more powerful servo comes in)

Receiver – Flysky FS-A3 in Traxxis 5624 waterproof receiver box

Controller – Flysky FS-GT2E

1 Gallon Bottle Wheel Wells

I made some front wheel wells out of a 1 gallon bottle. They'll get some paint when I am done with the rest of the undercarriage. Keeping it real cheap.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/63764171@N07/28723534677/in/dateposted-public/" title="Wheelwells"><img src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/915/28723534677_87aea3ba79_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="Wheelwells"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I mounted the receiver this morning on a plastics plate next to the motor. There is not as much room on this chassis as I would have expected. I am not using the receiver box that came on the HG P402 because it will be used to hold the BEC.

This HG P402 looks like it has potential. I read on the BangGood web page that some kits were missing parts and fasteners. Was this the case with you? I'll have to download the manual and see what it looks like.

Thanks for posting your build!

Nice BUILD!!! "thumbsup"
I've been doing a HG P402 Build and heavily Modified, in the 1.9" Scale Rigs Section. Unlike you, I completely BLEW my Budget - and I'm not done yet!! I'm going to want Metal Frame Rails. It's got WAY more Chassis flex than I can handle.

After looking at Your Wheelwells.... I definitely went about it the HARD way!! Your Gallon Jug looks MUCH cleaner than mine. If you get a chance to look at mine, on the last post, I show the 8 Degree Chubs I had Printed for the front Axles. They give more Positive Caster, and improves tracking and side hilling. I got them on Thingiverse, dirt cheap. If you have access to a 3D Printer, they would be even less.

DEFINITELY nice work!!!

I just saw them on your build thread, at under $7, I'll pick up a set. You don't happen to have a link, do you?

I will take a look.... Thingiverse is only for sharing FREE 3D Printing Files. I found a guy to Print them for me. I remember having a choice of about 18 colors to Print them in, depending on material used. Most Print Shops (that AREN'T Shapeways), charge VERY little.....

Mine was complete, nothing was missing but the box was pretty beat up when it arrived.

Mine was pretty much the same..... The Box was tore up, there were even HOLES in it....
But except for the Instructions being torn - which I could barely understand and read it - and didn't really need anyway, NONE of the parts were missing or Damaged.

Battery Tray

I cut the front and back off the battery tray and flipped it upside down to get a little more suspension travel before the axle hit the tray.

Looks GOOD!!! Clever idea to add some clearance. That's where my Motor is going to end up... So I went a different way, and mounted my Battery Tray long-way, on the drop portion of the middle Chassis.
It's good to know that with the Axle mounted Servo, it doesn't go up too obnoxiously high! Yours looks a lot cleaner than mine. Part of the reason why I'm doing a major redo....

Steering Reconfiguration

I "re-engineered" the steering because the turning radius was very weak and the servo arm was exposed to potential impacts. Bump steer has also beeb greatly reduced.

I really love the look of the brake caliper on the axle but it made it much harder to avoid rubbing and interference with with pitman arm and the track bar.

Good choice for a Servo!
I almost forgot... The Link for all the P402 3D Printed parts!

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2463338

This one project includes everything he did, to convert the lowly P402 into a 10.5" Wheelbase, Off-Road BEAST! I used most of it, because I wanted a n 11.6" Wheelbase, for my Gmade Komodo Body. I did do the Axle Mounted Servo kit, and GLAD I did! STUFF what someone ELSE thinks looks right. I've got better, sharper Steering than ever before!!
I also got the HD 23mg Waterproof Servo.... I can BEND the Axle with it - $24.00!!!
