I'm looking for a new CCW compact firearm. I usually carry my Pro Carry Kimber 45 with Wilson Combat magazines. I am wanting to try a polymer frame gun. I love my Kimbers and Browning High Power, but looking for something I can take on hiking and hunting trips and not worry about beating the hell out of it. I am looking for either a 40 s&w or a 45 ACP. in a high capacity. This is what I've looked at so far, and the more I look the harder the choice is:

Glock G23, G30

Springfield XD Compact 45

Sig P250 40s&w

Ruger SR40c (off the list, too many bad reviews)

S&W M&P 40

Probably can't go wrong with any of these.

Thanks for the help deciding guys. "thumbsup"

High capacity compact?

I have a XD45ACP in compact, but use the extended 12 round magazine.

If you want hi-cap polymer, there's the XDM 9mm. The .40 and .45 models can't compete when it comes to capacity...but you know that.

The S&W wouldn't be bad, and the Sig...well, it's a Sig. Hard to complain about a Sig.

The Glock, however. Not for me.

XDm is a definatly good choice... Also check out the Ruger LCR, revolver reliability in a subcompact.

Glock 23 Gen3 (std or RTF2) capacity is 13+1 with flush fit mags. Glock G22 15 round mags and Glocks 22 round mags work perfect also but don't fit flush. I don't trust the gen 4s mainly the 9mm gen 4s. The G300 is a great gun also just a fetty both in the slide and the grip. I own a G32 and a G33 in .357sig but have .40 barrels for them. Lots of aftermarket for the Glocks and they are reliable. My next choice would be the M&P. I really don't care for the XD design or high bore axis as a whole. best bet is to try and shoot each one your looking at and get what works for you.

Edit: Do some reading on the P250 that will help you make up your mind. Not sig's best firearm for sure.

Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380 is a good choice it can be carried in your front pocket without being noticed. It will do the job of a CCW just fine you don't need a .40 or a .45. It has a 5 round mag + 1 in the pipe and if you can't hit someone with 6 rounds you do not need a CCW to start with. Just my opinion, I am sure there will people that say nay.

I do love ruger's revolver's. I have a SP101 .357mag that I'll care sometimes. And couple of their single sixes. Just fun guns to shoot. Mainly looking for a auto to take with me up in the mountains.

I need to look at Glock more. "thumbsup" I liked the P250 because it's double action only. Never really liked the DA/SA, I like single action only or double action only. That way all the shots are the same.

I agree, for a CCW, really don't need a high cap., I do have a little Bretta .380 that's easier to carry than some. My dad has the Ruger LCP .380 that's fits in your shirt pocket.

This gun is really for taking in the mountains, camping, hunting, and hiking. I want something that can stop a mountain lion, bear, or when I'm in Idaho, a pack of wolves. Hopefully won't ever have to. But a guy my Dad knows was up bow hunting elk and calling in bull and all of a sudden there were a pack of 9 wolves around him.

Consider a .357SIG

Stay away from the Sig P250. I'm a Sig dealer and have seen/heard directly of so many failures I refuse to sell them in my shop. It is not on par with any other Sig firearm.

I'd be going with the Glock for your application.

Thank you sir"thumbsup" good to know. I've been spending a lot of time on the net, but so many contradicting reviews.

You being a Sig dealer, what's your favorite Sig? I am going to go look at Glock's again today.

Ive got a Ruger P345, Its a pretty nice gun but the overall size is what bothers me for every day carrying. The Ruger SR9 is also a nice gun"thumbsup"

I love my glock 23. It's the most comfortable compact I have held and fired. There's a lot of genius in the simplicity of the glock mechanics. Sure their are nicer looking guns with more features, I just think for the money, glock is hard to beat.

For what you want to do (in red) you may want to look at a G29SF (SF=Short Frame) chambered in 10mm for an auto pistol. Unless you have big hands than a standard model should be fine. The slide is approx .125" wider on the 10mm and .45 Glocks (excluding G36) than the .40, 9mm/.357sig Glocks. The G29 holds 10+1. You can get .40 S&W, .357sig and 9x25 Dillion conversion barrels for the G29 also and use the same mags. Glocks are not for everyone so its best to hold them and shoot them before you buy.

Cabelas sells Hornady 165gr. Critical Defense ammo in 10mm which is ideal for self defense to prevent overpenetration, you can only get it at Cabelas. For woods carry you would want to use a hardcast or FMJ bullet with a wide metplat for increased penetration and crushing power. You can also get heavy fmj and hardcast ammo for the .40 S&W. Swamp Fox, Doubletap and Buffalo Bore make hot ammo in specific weights. A .44mag revolver would be best for woods carry but with the right bullet an auto service caliber can be effective.

I dont know much about them but I keep seeing Kimber Solo's advertised in shooting mags, they look nice...

Nice looking guns but they are only available in 9mm. They are also expensive and have been pretty problematic. For less money you can pick up a Kahr PM9 or CM9 and have a better pistol.

I'd have to go with the XD Compact. I haven't shot one, but if they're anything like thier fullsize counterpart it'd be hard to beat. I'm in love with my two tone XDM 9mm at the moment.. Sweetest shooting pistol I've ever shot, short of a nice 1911. "thumbsup"

Xdm 3.8 40 Cal holds 11+1 with small mag and 16+1 with extended mag
ruger sp101. 357 holds 5
