Hi everyone...I am a total noob at RC stuff. First let me say what a great site you all have here, and what amazing projects you all create! Seriously impressive projects. I have some questions so please bear with my manifesto here...

On a whim I bought this ebay POS(?): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280134436174&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=018

I got inspired watching my 5yr old play with his brand new New Bright RC Hummer (1/18 or 1/24 scale; it was a gift). Thought it would be fun to play around with him so I looked on ebay and got that 57 chevy 2wd for a good price. I really dont like the monster truck look with tires sticking way out though. The one I bought is a Team Losi rc10 with a flexible plastic body. Looks to be fun but having started doing some research I discovered the rc truck I really want...<drumroll please>...tamiya bruiser. Yep, just my luck I would like what amounts to the holy grail of rc trucks. great, story of my life.

In watching a ton of videos and using the SEARCH button here I realize I like the 1:10 scalers. So here start the questions:

-1.9 and 2.2 refer to tire/wheel size from what I gather-do either of those sizes work on a 1/10 rig or are they specific to different scales?

-the Hilift seems to be universally regarded as the best starter scaler. How easy is it to swap the body if I dont want the f350? Will any body will do so long as WB is close or same or is it more complicated?

-Do you need to narrow the wheels and tires like I read about or do some come stock like that?

-what are other options for a first rig? I saw the "girlfriends 5 day build" thread in the 1.9 scale forum and really dug that. Although I'm not interested in the build aspect of it so much, which is why buying used appeals to me. I'm on a budget too-I have enough expensive hobbies (motorcycle racing anyone?)...

-speaking of that thread, what is cc-01 mean? In context I thought it referred to a Tamiya model but couldn't find anything on that.

-any other pitfalls to buying a used rig instead of new, beyond the usual risk of buying used?

-are you limited to using bodies from other RC trucks or can you use plastic models? is that even an option?

-on my truck I would like to replace the body with a hard body. is that possible and/or worth it (given I will eventually break down and get a scaler (answered that one myself, didnt I)? And how would you do that with the specific body posts this one has?

-paint: you guys all airbrush or rattle can acceptable? I figure my rig will be a thrasher. I dont like shelf queens, I like them to look abused (one might say "loved")...There were two bruisers in particular that I totally dug-one was painted flat black and looked thrashed, the other was beige with flat black front fender and red door...those kicked ***.

I'm babbling, so I'll stop now before embarrassing myself more. Any info would be greatly appreciated, and I am continuing to use the search button...

Let me see if I can answer some of these for you....

1.The truck you bought is actually a original gold tub Team Associated RC10 (not a Losi) $66.00 is a steal if it is in good shape. If not you can do some more E-bay shoping and restore her to her former racing glory. Not a good crawler or scaler but a very cool desirable car.

2. 1.9 is considered by many as a "true" scale tire/ wheel 2.2 is more common in the comp crawler scene although some use 2.2's on their scalers (myself included) but they seem to look better on my 14" wb Silverado bodied rig. Many scalers are on a smaller wheelbase so the 1.9's just look better. Both will fit most trucks.

3. The Highlift is a great start and can be run "as is" or modded to be quite the crawler. Most bodies will fit but may take a little creative modification to fit.

4. The 1.9's are pretty much ready to go, the 2.2's though most narrow them for clearance reasons (while turning) and the fact that most 2.2 rims are to damn wide anyway!

5. Other options are wheely Kings, TLT's (discontinued but parts are around) and some of the new ones like the Axial AX-10 with some fab work and creativity can all be scalers which from what I have read sounds like what you are leaning towards. ( the black one is probably Badgers Bruiser/ mounty and the tan one sounds like TJ's TMA project one of my fav's;-)) Bruisers and or Mountineers are usually pretty pricey and don't come along every day so if you want one you better be patient and have deep pockets!

Plenty of people here don't even own an airbrush and can lay down some sick paint jobs, so no it is not needed.

As far as bodies go, anything you can hack, glue, file, sand, stretch, chop, section or whatever is fair game! Check out some of Slugz' builds like shelly 1:6th scale ranger (started as a wally world toy) and many others...
The best part of this hobby is the nearly ENDLESS ways you can build a rig!

Hope this helps and you are not overwhelmed now with all that info ( I know I was for months when I found this drug... I mean place.

Good luck! Oh, and Welcome to RCC!"thumbsup"

cc/xc 01`

The cc01 is referring to Tamiya's chassis for many of the classics, like YJ jeep, isuzu Mu, CR-V , Pajero and not so loved Touareg. They are a great chassis for scalers, solid axle in the rear and Independent Front Suspension. Here are some links for more info.

I have 2 that I have swapped tops on, one clod (chevy) and one blackfoot (ford stepside).

by the way, they tend to work best with 1.9's on them.

Welcome to the hobby, it is endless fun working on them and playing with them. I have 2 young kids and we love taking the RC's on trail rides.

Thanks! great info, both of you. I really appreciate it.

On my truck, the seller listed it as a Team Losi, I wouldnt know otherwise, but it does have the gold solid bottom. I'll have to post pics and see what you guys think about its condition. Although I am more interested in a crawler. Having said that, I probably wont be doing lots of serious crawling, just some backyard ruts, tree roots and stuff like that.

I'm really impressed with what I'm seeing here. Lots of great stuff. One suggestion, it would be great if there were a "starter section" where someone who wants to start RC's can go for really basic info. Either I missed it posting so late in the night or there isnt one...

Anyway, thanks again guys.
More later.

As stated don't worry you got a good deal on that RC10, restore it and you can make some money off of it

well, we've yet to see if it works...battery dead. I'll try heading over to the LHS (local hobby shop, right?) and get a new 6cell pack.

Thanks again.
